Baits That Walk The Dog Subsurface...
SK Caffeine shad is awesome for this. They came out with the magnum size at 7" now which should be pretty dynamite. It's my favorite soft jerkbait as it's a bit heavier than a fluke and easier to get a big zig zag retrieve.

Muskie?
Thats not musky behavior from my experience. Musky on a normal swim do not move in a big S like described. If it was on a pretty good pace then possibly but i wouldn't be so sure.

5/0 Frog Hook
Two needle nose pliers. Grab just under the barb and up the hook shaft where the curve is towards the body. Just ease it until it bends maybe 2-3 degrees. Too much and it will be hanging up in pads. Too much will weaken the hooks as well.

If you ever purchase all that stuff from TW, just know you could have saved yourself 30-40% by shopping around. Especially on the Shimano and Daiwa stuff.

People And Lightning?
Captured this on my GoPro from my recent Canada trip. The one and only lightning bolt that sent us right back to the docks. I don't mess around with lightning on water.

People And Lightning?
I'd pulled both of my sons off the field without hesitation. No one is stopping me of that. My .02, put your kids on a different team. Some guys are just ignorant...and then something bad happens.

Swimbait/glide Bait Rod For A New Guy
It looks like you've been doing your reading, you're on a good track. The Okuma/Cardiff would be a great setup to allow you to throw a lot of bait selections out there. Regarding line......I use braid for my big baits. I have been fishing a long time and I have never casted off a big bait. You just need to finesse it, not heave it out like you're trying to reach the other side of the lake. With that said, I'm not against a heavy mono or copoly. CXX would be a great choice and there will be more chiming in on line choices. So take opinions for what they're worth, every angler is different. Because we fish the same waters and I am very familiar with the nuisances of pike, I will tell you this.....they will cut through any line be it braid, mono, co-p, or fluoro in the 15#-80# choices. I've had a couple Hudds taken by 18" pike on 65#braid, it sucks. Tie-able leaders like toothy critter from Cortland are available and so are various wire type leaders. You will have to pick and choose your poisons. Using a leader can affect the action on some baits, not all. Recently in Canada i was using a 100# fluoro leader on 65# braid and caught my PB musky (avatar pic) using a Deps 175SS. The action was still really good with that set up. Was it the best, perhaps not but i'm not gambling with 40-55" fish in the water.

250.00 Dollar Lure. Would You Buy It?
I caught my PB musky a few weeks ago on Deps 175 SS. It's intended for bass, it obviously works on musky. I've caught bass on my musky gear so it's all relative......it's fishing. Was the $55 I spent on the Deps worth it? Yes, it caught a lifetime memory for me and probably more to come. I have swimbaits that are retailed twice as much as that, and guys like Speed have plenty more than me. What people spend on their hobby is of no concern to the next guy in line. I work hard for my gear. If I had the means to buy $250 lures, I sure would if it made me happy and brought confidence to the boat. There are plenty of musky lures out there as well that are $300+ . I've even seen in person lures that go for over $700 in that market. Bass are not the only species that have these "high dollar" lure markets. The high price on lures usually comes from the hand craftsman ship and limited availability. Fish whats right for you. It's all about the memories. We only live once!

250.00 Dollar Lure. Would You Buy It?
Try throwing a Cowgirl (bucktail) with #10's for musky. It's like cranking a drift sock through the water. That will make the Deps 250 feel like you're throwing a VIsion 110.
