  1. It is frog dubbing from fly tyers dungeon which is kind of a replacement for deer hair. You got the tail section dead on...Most of my poppers for sunnies are in the 6 or 4 range. I kind of get tired of catching small ones so this helps weed them out a bit. Here is a fly that i literally sat down and had no idea what I was gonna do and this is what i came up with. Front is a fish shank 1.5" long attached to a 2/0 hook. Below is the untrimmed and trimmed version. Super bulky but it is what it is. I actually tried it out in front of the pool jet and it swims better than i thought it would. Now if i could get a fish to hook up will be a different story.
  2. So you bought a rod and listed all these complaints about it that you could have figured out before you bought it if you wanted to. Then make a post talking about it. Not everyone holds their spinning rods the way you do so there might be those people who don't get blisters from casting all day. It also looks like that is a giant spinning reel on there as well which could factor into your soft hands being blistered from casting all day. As far as a grip getting hot, yeah it can happen. I have a couple rods with black handles and they can get hot but what is funny is usually I am near water when i am using it and i can get some of that on there and it cools it off. Cork or synthetic, preference really. Higher end doesn't mean it has to be cork. With the number of complaints you have, you should absolutely take it back.
  3. the lakes i fish are too grass choked for me to consistently throw them but i have had success. On the river i use them year round though, when I am not fly fishing.
  4. A buddy named this fly the heap moss frog so I think I will stick with that name....got to test it out on a local swampy creek area that was up probably 2 feet....fish seemed to like it whatever it is
  5. Couple more...First attempts at a feather game changer.
  6. they probably did the lake a favor by taking out some fish. Lots of the smaller lakes around here are full of smaller bass.
  7. well i didn't punch too long. I paddled through it and made it to a culvert between the two lakes. Te culverts were half blocked so the water level in that lake was pretty high but water was moving through, almost waterfall like, at a decent clip. This created a semi open spot that i was ablate exploit with a jig for the majority of my fish on the day.
  8. it was crazy, I have fished this lake for over a decade and have never seen it like this before. I tried punching which was working from a technical standpoint but i wasn't catching anything as that is a completely foreign technique to me so I may not have been hitting the right areas. I almost wanted to climb out and look underneath to see how open it was underneath lol
  9. Went out this morning at just about sunrise to a lake that has been closed since February. I really wanted to get on the river but with al the rain they are gonna be blown out for a little while. Anyways, I arrived in a dense fog , left in a downpour, and the lake was up probably 2' or more. The grass that normally is subsurface was move the surface a good bit so I am guessing that meant the water was even higher when it originally sprouted. It made me paddle through an area that, see pic below, that felt more like i was on my front lawn than on the lake. Lilly pads were also a solid 18-24" above the surface in most areas. Started the day out throwing a spro popping frog i picked up. Never fished one before so I figured I would give it a shot. Had a few hits but couldn't hook up. Normally my hookup percentage is pretty solid so i was thinking it was the frog. Switched out to some off brand one and had a few hits and misses then a buzz toad and same deal....guess they didn't want a frog today enough to actually get hooked. Picked up a few on a fluke, crank bait and a popper but it wasn't until I switched over to the jig that it really picked up. I ended up catching 16 in about 6 hours of fishing. Nothing big but all were solid fish. I will be interested to see if next time i usr the Spro frog if my hookups are better....
  10. usually one with no windows or a rental
  11. That is semi free market capitalism at work.
  12. sounds like the guy who talks to you in the parking lot and says he was delivering speakers to a store and they had extra and they said he could keep them and he is selling them at a discount.....
  13. self inflatable is the way to go. I fish out of kayak and other than winter and when i am running the river where i may actually need it, i am going with the self inflating.
  14. Picking a kayak fish finder is no different than a boat with two exceptions. First being transducer and mounting that and how big of a screen you think you can handle on your boat. Other than that, the same process applies. I have a helix 5 DI/SI model and I wish i would have gotten a larger screen and my next one I will probably go to a 9". Side imaging of some sort is great on a kayak and saves you time paddling over dead water. If you don't fish offshore much then honestly a depth finder won't benefit you other than something to look at and water temperature.
  15. i have never caught more sunnies than using my fly rod. Usually go with slow sinking spiders or poppers if i want some topwater action. Both always seem to out fish anything conventional.
  16. Not having paddled the kayak i can only go based on what I see and I am not impressed. It looks like a combination of Bonafide, jackson and vibe all thrown into a blender and hoping it works. Also it seems to be pretty heavy for a boat not even 12' long which is a concern when transporting. I also noticed you saying you aren't really into kayaking I am gonna say that you probably won't be happy fishing from one then. Pedal drives are ok but not worth it anymore to me, might as well motorize in majority of cases. Also if you can store a kayak you can store a raider type boat. the kayak you posted is 11.5'x35" and around 16" deep. A pelican 10e is shorter at 10'2" but wider at 50". didn't have specs on depth but i am guessing almost twice as deep as a kayak. The space taken up for both would be very similar.
  17. I haven't fished there in a few years but it is a very wide river in those spots you mentioned. Contact Blue mountain outfitters (i think that is theme) in Marysville and talk to them. They also do or at least did shuttles for people as well so that may help out your decision making.
  18. Game changers aren't hard per se but they do take some time, depending on the materials used some take longer than others. I made this one using a brush I made so it was relatively quick really. I am also going to be working on a frog pattern i saw that uses synthetic floating dubbing that is supposed to be easier to use than traditional deer hair styles so we will see what happens. I also have a few craw ideas floating around in my head i want to try as well. Flipping over hooks sucks!!! been there done that and not a fun deal to clean up and sort.
  19. best one is sugar mama's husband or cougar sitter
  20. A little game changer action. Probably my best one yet.
  21. It definitely can be that easy and there are a few spots I do just that to fish them.
  22. Spot lock is cool, i have used it on a regular boat before but it isn't like it is going to just sit there and hold you and make sure you are facing the right direction necessarily. I know on my dad's boat with it, it was nice but it would kick on at times when you weren't thinking it was going to and on a boat, it isn't a big deal but if you happen to be standing in a kayak you could be taking a swim lol
  23. Disagree. The biggest fish can be caught on all the techniques you mentioned depending on the time of day, year and conditions. My largest bass of this year was caught on a dahlberg diver topwater fly. My largest fish last year came on frogs, jigs and a couple on flukes.
  24. For me personally with the way motors have been changing for kayaks I have decided that when i go that route i am going with a motor. I will also be using a motor on a kayak that i can still paddle well too. That way i have two kayaks for the price of one basically. I currently have an ATAK 140 and it paddles great but i am looking for a motor option here in the near future so I can do motor up and float back river trips and cover a long distance on a few lakes i frequent more easily. It also will allow me to use it as a regular old paddle kayak on smaller lakes and creeks that I fish a lot as well. As far as anchoring in the wind goes, it is more challenging in a kayak but it isn't that bad once you get an anchor trolley installed. I have toyed with the idea of a second anchor for relay locking me in to a spot but i haven't been in that many situations where that is needed.
  25. I was able to get out fishing twice this weekend and with the rivers being higher than I like to deal with on the kayak, aka not in the mood for a lot of paddling, I decided to hit two smaller "rivers". The first one I was searching for smallies mainly and explored a stretch I hadn't been on before. I ended up paddling about 2 miles upstream and fished along the way. I decided to stop at a waterfall area rather than haul my kayak up it...save that for next time I guess. I ended up catching a couple smallies, a few spots, a trophy sized fallfish and a bunch of sunnies. These small streams always produce something and you never really know what you will catch. Nothing big this trip but it was a great day nonetheless. yesterday we went peach, strawberry and blueberry picking and got home around 4 so i decided i would get out to another local swampy type river that has largemouth, spots (learned that yesterday), bowfin, pickerel and sunnies. Was able to fish for about 3 hours or so and the water was high and chocolate milk pretty much. I started out throwing streamers like normal but they weren't producing so I decided given the high water and low visibility they probably would be tight to cover and have difficulty finding the flies. I tied on a big deer hair popper and tried making a big splat as tight to the shore as I could and then let it sit. Turned out that was the right move as I started picking up fish. I ended up catching 9, nothing big but it is kind of rare to catch anything over a couple pounds out there but it can happen.
