  1. i have gone every which way it seems and it seems like we always get stuck somewhere lol I count it as part of the trip at this point.....
  2. I fly fish for bass too....i have a Fly Tying post on here that i add to when I tie something new. You fishing the Delaware or lakes? Soak in all the information on here and just apply it to fly fishing. Lots of good flies out there that imitate just about everything under the sun and for every conceivable condition. There are days that fly fishing out fishes conventional and vice versa. As long as you are having fun and catching fish...it's all good
  3. Its a little further drive than 3 hours though once you factor in traffic in the summer months. We have talked about moving there eventually as well but with kids in schools we don't want to move them. I am also a teacher and i am thinking that once i get my admin certification i might be able to start looking down there to see what is available and go from there....
  4. Good info as I am debating on a trip down there as well. I have fished the sound and caught a couple reds before but don't really know what I am doing lol Next time I go I plan on doing more fishing on the inshore stuff rather than the surf stuff.
  5. A couple more of my recent ties....
  6. Why would you get a rod & reel without knowing what you are going to use it for? I have that same rod but in the 6'10" length and use it almost exclusively for weightless soft plastics. I use braid with it as well. I will throw smaller topwater on it as well but not that often, mainly because i have another rod to do that but this rod will do it just fine. So i will say weightless soft plastics, smaller topwater and light shaky heads would be your best use of that rod.
  7. I have a tungsten carbide wedding ring and they told me that cutting it is possible but it is a pain but usually if it comes down to it, this style of ring they can break with a couple quick smacks with a hammer if needed.
  8. Not out of line at all. Only time I worry about it though is when people post up small mountain streams when chasing brookies as they can be decimated real fast if conservation minded people decide to go there.
  9. Any other Curado or any other reel period? My dad didn't have an issue with any other reel but his Penn either. Either way, if it is loosening that isn't a good thing so hopefully you can figure it out quickly.
  10. Nope. I would guess there is something you are doing with your casting or retrieving motion that is loosening it. My dad had a similar problem on a spinning set up that he was using for stripers where the reel seat was getting loose. It turned out it was something with how he was casting and holding the rod that was loosening it up over time. Once we figured it out, never had the issue again.
  11. I don't own one but there is at least one guy around here that has one and I have talked to him about it. He absolutely loves the boat. I have always been intrigued by them as well and if i go the pond prowler type boat route, the twin troller will be the top on my list, even with the higher cost. I have always preferred a purpose built product over one that you modify to make work. That twin troller would be perfect for the places i fish since the majority are electric only.
  12. Only time i bring an actual lunch is if i know it will be a 12 hour plus day and it involves a lot of paddling or fighting the wind. Otherwise, a protein bar or two and a few gatorades and i am good to go.
  13. I pitch a lot from my kayak but never flip. I use anything from 7' to 7'4" but that has zero to do with me being in a kayak. I haven' had any issue with a rod because I am in a kayak and i fish everything from my shortest rod which is 6'6" to fly rods that are 9'.
  14. I am sure he can but that doesn't mean he should. I'd also wonder what fish he is catching that is 20+lbs on a fly rod consistently, especially if he is in Virginia. Fly rods have a lot more natural shock absorber built in so lighter weight line is easier to manage. When I fish for bass though, I am usually using a 12-15lb leader and throwing big flies. Your buddy is probably a trout guy dry fly purist type lol
  15. I'd hate to hear what people say about me as I start fly fishing then..... This is also the first I have heard of those terms before and I have been fishing for 30+ years now. I guess i spend more time fishing than shooting the **** with people at boat ramps, tackle shops etc....
  16. Most expensive conventional setup is in the $400 range. Fly rod I have a couple combos that retailed around 1k
  17. Pretty sure you have nothing to worry about as long as there is the proper amount of grease in there.
  18. Looks real good man. One thing i will say, I'm sure the manual said it too, after your first few trips go back and check all the bolts and retighten as necessary. I go through all mine once a year and retighten but haven't had to adjust anything after the first time I checked them way back when i got mine. is that trailer long enough to hold the kayaks? looks short but it may be the angle. I know for mine i had to get the extended tongue to fit my 14' kayak.
  19. Tied this up with the intention of using it in the dirty water i will probably be seeing should i make it out to the river tomorrow.

If what you are doing isn't working you can vary your retrieve and/or locations. I don't do a whole lot of hopping when jig fishing. I like to walk the jig through whatever cover I am fishing. Also, pause longer than you think you need to and you might be pleasantly surprised.
  21. In a boat you are probably right but in a kayak it is a different story as are tie off points being available that would accommodate that knot.
  22. Anchoring in current can be a tricky proposition in any boat. I fish from a kayak and have used a drag chain in the past and had no issues but it is also straight off the stern of my boat. It doesn't take much current to get dicey if the anchor gets stuck. As stated elsewhere a way to quickly release the anchor is key, luckily i haven't had to do it yet but i have a river knife mounted right underneath my kayak seat should the need arise.
  23. Tied up a few more tonight. Turned out ok and hopefully i can see if the bass agree here soon.
  24. i agree completely. The first thing I do when i get to a lilly pad field is sit and watch and listen. I watch for lilly pads to move in a way that isn't normal and listen for bluegills popping. You'd be surprised at how often fish can make themselves known if you let them.
