  1. When I was 20 I learned this lesson the hard way .Every person I encounter , I make a general impression immediately .
  2. Many years ago I found these really cool 1/4 jigheads with a screw lock on it to hold the worm in place . I did not know they were shaky heads . I used them just like a Texas rig on the same gear and caught the heck out of river smallies . Sometimes it pays to be ignorant . I still bounce 1/4 ounce ones around like a Texas rig .
  3. Beetle Spins . I've been sticking a lot this summer on these .88 cent lures .
  4. Smallmouth love crawfish . I've witnessed one following me around while wading . I kept dangling a worm in its face , it would swim up look at it then back off . So I replaced the worm with a craw , dropped it in and that smallie was all over that lure .
  5. River smallies fight hard . I use casting gear .If I had to choose between a light or ml I'd go with the ml .
  6. I take 1 rod .Mobility ,to me , is more important than being loaded down with gear .
  7. I dont think one is any better than the other . By habit I like Manns Jelly worms . Been using them for several decades .
  8. Bass are pretty resilient and occupy lots of different waters . Because of the heat I've been driving around and fishing places others just drive by . Dont pick lures based on what you think bass are biting on , choose the lures that excel in the areas you are targeting . This past month most of the fish I have caught have been on Beetlespins and grubs , because they work well in the waters I'm targeting . Culverts , back water , ditches and streams. If I was targeting deep bass I would use different lures . Same with grass , brush ...
  9. Man , I'm so lucky to have good places to fish . Dont you have other places to go ? Bass flourish in many environments
  10. Trying to stay cool by wading a river today . Caught on a quarter ounce Beetle Spin .
  11. I tested my Rapalas with meat that was weighed at the store . They are a little light , so if I almost catch a 6 lber according to the scale , I probably did .
  12. Thats funny . The video where I seen uncle Homer Circle fishing , hes holding the rod by the end of the handle . not the foregrip . The worse place possible to get a good hook-set . The video was Bigmouth Forever by Glen Lau .
  13. They work .I was given two sets as gifts . I never gave the bass sized one much use but the small ones , I caught lots of pan fish with them . If I go to LOZ this fall I may just take them with me and try them under the docks .Try them and see . They can even be rigged weedless .
  14. I like to fish spinnerbaits and crankbaits on rip rap . A chartreuse Bomber Flat A is first choice for cranks . If there are any wing dams , those are good spots to throw a Flat A .
  15. I'm a hundred miles north and have fished the backwaters of the Mississippi quite a bit . If you can find any culverts , those are almost always good for a fish or six . Rock , riprap is a big factor here too .
  16. They all work . sounds like you are doing a pretty good job at matching the tool for the job . Those deep holes you fish would be good places to throw cranks .List what depths you would want to fish a crank in and you will receive some recommendations . You didnt list spinnerbaits . They are like the swiss army knife of bass lures and work in lots of conditions .
  17. Looks like this tourney is a go . I selected Combs , Hanselman , Palanuick , Johnston and Johnston .
  18. I have the Rapala High Contrast digital scales and having problems with it . It shuts off if a fish barely moves . Sometimes it reads a little to much . I have caught bass and the scales read like 1200 lbs or some ridiculous number . I'm going to try some fresh batteries but right now I wouldnt recommend them . I loved them at first .
  19. Look at "all" the water close to where you live . Go to places bass boats cant go . Take advantage of having a kayak .Keep it a secret . I know some really good spots that bass boats cant get into . I have fished them out of a canoe ,small plastic bass boat or waded . Just dont tell people where you are catching fish . Thats easy for me to do , I dont take people with me . Some folks though just have to spill the beans .
  20. Dont know but a channel cat will hit a lure violently .
  21. Buzzbaits , spinnerbaits , worms and crankbaits are the lures that work well for me . Crankbaits along rip rap is a good combo . I like the old metal lipped Arbogast Mudbug . Wiggle warts do well also but probably any lure that works during the day will work in the dark .
  22. I was fishing with a young cousin just last year . We had Texas rigs tied on and I instructed him to cast the direction of the buoy I tossed on a point. "Do not cast behind us , its too deep and there are no fish out there ". And of course he did the "wrong" thing cast behind us and caught a 4 lber , biggest fish of the day .
  23. I'm in the minority here and get line twist often with a Texas rig and baitcasting gear . I must be rigging it sloppily .
  24. I use 1/4 ounce weights most of the time for Texas rigs . I've been using Tungsten . I think I wasted my money buying lighter tungsten weights but do prefer them 1/4 ounce and up
  25. Just use some variant of purple like purple, black grape, june bug , tequila sunrise and you will be good to go in all water .
