  1. WELCOME! I was watching a fishing show over the weekend and they were talking to an industry expert about red fishing line. I actually think the guy worked for Berkley, but I'm not sure. He said (as best as my recollection is) that unless you're fishing in tannic or muddy water, the red line does not become invisible, and the bass do see it. I used red line for about 3 years and didn't notice any big difference either way in my catch rate. I had no problems with red line, but decided to move back to clear and low vis green for my fishing line preference, simply becasue I only buy line when it goes on sale -- and those colors usually are clear and green.
  2. I often use 4 worms with success when night fishing smallies at a couple of Pocono lakes. I rig them normally, except that I add a Rattle Bead to the line of the setup. http://www.xtackle.com/index_files/rattlebeads.htm (note: I'm not familiar with these. I just posted a link to something that resembles the beads I have with built in rattles, which are no longer made. >)

  4. Yeah Baby!
  5. One thing I do, especially if I miss a few strikes, is to remove the split ring for the line tie (if the spoon has one) from the spoon. Then I just thread the line through the hole and tie the line to a treble hook. This gives a little more freedom for the spoon's action, gives it a little different action, and provides another hook to the spoon for hooksets.
  6. Yeah it helps catch bass and allows my plastics come through the weeds easier, but it can be a pain in the butt. We get to the lake at 6:00 am after a 45 minute drive, and realize I forgot the key to the lock for the boat moored there. Knowing the park office opens at 8:30 am and they have a copy of the key, we decide to fish the bank for awhile. I open my brand new tube of Megastrike (first tube lasted us all last season). The top of the tube falls on the ground and rolls into a snake or chipmunk hole near a boulder, and you can't even see it because the hole is so deep. Then when you finally get out in the boat and the temps get up to 95, that stuff becomes really soft. And without a lid you have to be careful where you put that stuff so as not to get it all over anything and everything. And finally that evening realizing that no lid from any tube you have the medicine cabinet will fit it... yeah it can be a pain in the butt.
  7. My only experience has been with Beltzville Dam, in NE PA. Several times during severe droughts they have draw down the lake (I think it was to help keep the salt water at bay in the Delaware River). All the shallow vegetation died off, and when the water finally rose again, it was quite awhile (months) before the bite was good from the shoreline (not that the bite is ever good at the Dead Sea). The only good thing about the drawdowns was you were able to check out and see what the lake structure looked like when their was no water (and build a couple of rockpiles in the process that few know about ).
  8. WELCOME! I live down the road from Blue Mountain Ski Resort. You'll have a couple of nice lakes to fish around Monroe County. I mostly fish 2 lakes in Carbon County, although I try to get up to Tobyhanna Lake once or twice a year. Good luck over the summer. Check this site out: http://www.fish.state.pa.us/county.htm
  9. BLACK in just about everything plastic. SILVER in almost all hardbaits.

  12. Yes, you just pop it and then let it settle down to the bottom again, or drag it, or fish it like a T-rig, or hop it, etc., etc.... work it any and every way imaginable. You need to go finesse at some of the Pocono lakes, and cold water situations up north, if you want to be successful. I've been using Charlie Brewer baits and tackle for over 20 years. And Charlie Brewer... of Slider fame, is also credited with inventing the Gitzit (tube bait). I'm a big fan of the Slider head jigs, their various 4 Slider worms, their 1.5 Slider grubs for cold water smallmouth, and their long discontinued Hard Times Grubs. I use the Spider Classic Head (3/0 hook), the Slider Spider Head (2/0 hook), and when I want a gliding action I go with the Snagless Slider Head. I haven't used there other style heads in quite a while. I also use Slider head jigs for various other grubs, slim sticks, beaver craws, and many other plastics. They use thin wire hooks (excellent for smaller plastics), and can be worked easily through a plethora of obstacles like weeds, rocks and wood. And when they do get hung up, the hook often bends and you get back your entire rig. You just need to take your pliers and bend the business end back into shape. Now, if you hook into a monster, you need to be careful to not horse it in.
  13. I watched one of the funniest and unique commercials ever the other night for Ocean City, MD on a national network. Anyone else see it? Brilliant!
  14. TERMINATOR SPINNERBAITS In 1997 Terminator spinnerbaits were introduced to the public, and sold in kit form via an infomercial. They were invented by a dentist from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Over half of the stuff in my panic box are things that are now discontinued and have always produced when the bite is tough, so I use them very sparingly.
  16. Yeah, the rapids can be a blast. When I was a bit younger I enjoyed running the Lehigh Gorge after Dam Release or after a heavy rain which turned the class I/II river into a class III/IV. Lots of thrills, but I guess not too safe in a plastic Coleman canoe. I remember once taking a friend, who was a marine attack helicopter pilot down the river on a particularly nasty river day. He was a bit shaken to say the least, or maybe looking back I should say he expressed reasonable caution. Those canoes aren't really made to go airborne (if you hit a few boulders just right), and usually repairs had to be made to it during each trip, not to mention fashioning emergency makeshift paddles on occasion. The gorge is cut into mountains, lots of bends, and has a bunch of sharp old abandoned iron works left in the river from the Molly Maguires back in the days of coal mining. When we were done, he told me he'll never do that again. He said he would rather fly his helicopter at tree level through all the twists and turns between the mountains at top speed, than in the front of my canoe again. Go figure!

Bobby Garlands Hard Times Grubs, Berkley 4 hand pours, 4 Slider Worms, Kastmaster jigging spoons and blade baits.
  18. My collection of signed Elmer Valo MLB cards (along with his gloves, bats, uniforms, trophies) got mistakenly thrown out a number of years ago. Need to rebuild the collection for a display in the rec room. Got any?
  19. I got to try the rig out over the weekend. Went to a lake well know for numbers in small fish, but not many large fish. Started out fishing the rig in open areas and around boulders, but no luck. We then hit the lily pad areas for the last hour, from 10am to 11am in 90 degree weather. That is were the rig shined, and letting it fall in pockets was the ticket. And it produced all of the biggest fish of the day. Some hits were on the fall, others came slightly jigging it after it came to rest. No camera along, but I have mangled and bent shak-e2 hooks to attest to the effectiveness. That Shak-e2 rig and a frog are now my lily pad goto setups.
  20. I have several reels that are not working. Most of them I paid in the $30 to $60 range. I don't buy expensive reels anymore since the only one I did buy went deep six it's first tourney. My question is... Is there a correlation between original price paid, and the decision to get repairs? I can't see paying $40 for a reel and then after several years sending them out and costing $25 for repairs and shipping. I've never sent a reel out for repair. I either fix them myself (which usually doesn't work see below on how much I know about reels), use them for parts, or throw them out.
  21. This weekend (Sat 6/7/08 and Sun 6/8/08) New Jersey is having their Fish-For-Free days. It's a great opportunity for border state anglers to see how fine the bass fishing is in New Jersey. But be sure to read their regulations before hitting the water.
  22. Bobby Garland's Hard Times Grub (discontinued long long time ago) fished on a 1/8 ounce Slider Spider jig. The bait in several colors take up half my panic box. Don't bother looking for them, I think I'm the only one left in the world who has any. :

  24. Can't tell you how to unlock the pattern, only to relay last weekends experience here. In NE PA it's post spawn, a time at our local lake that the bass tend to have lock jaw. My son-in-law always makes us hit the lily pad zone for an hour or two each trip. Our regular lures weren't working in the pads... senkos, ikas, frogs and T-worms. From experience, I tied on a 6 green pumpkin w/chart tail Lizard - carolina rigged (20 from the weight). I told him to slowly work the outside of the pads and any paths through the pads. It was the ticket! He then caught several bass on the rig and missed a bunch (it was his first time using the carolina rig, and I couldn't get him to utilize a sweeping hookset instead of his overhead hookset).
