  1. And as soon as you went into water just higher than the knee boots it would be like having on waders with real serious leaks in both legs.
  2. Bobbyc I'm trying to understand why you need a portable charger. You still need power. Are you thinking portable generator?
  3. When it's calm I let all the ripples fade from the cast then move it ever so slightly I might move it 3 or 4 times then just crank it in withy a stop and jerk about half way to the boat. As the wind increases I get progressively more aggressive.
  4. You mention and on-board charger which I think is an absolute must not and extra. Beyond that I'd be sure to have a water temperature gauge that measures in 10ths, i.e. 49.5.
  5. The purpose of these shows is to highlight and bring attention to the sponser's products and if the show continues the sponser had better see some increased sales. Now if you don't want to see the infomercials don't watch and don't buy the products advertised. If enough choose this approach in time the fishing show will be replaced with a replay of Gunsmoke, a new version of American Idol, Dancing with the Stars or some other program but not one with even the tiniest bit of fishing information. I for one have no problem watching Bill Dance on his home pond. He gives a few hints and observations that will be helpful to some and more interesting to me than American Idol.
  6. I have a 1989 or 90 18CDX. My transducer for the console sounder is mounted to shoot through the hull right in the center of the pad. Unless it is very very deep mine gives me depth at 50MPH.
  7. IPT relates to how fast the lure is retreived while GR gives you the mechanical advantage. MA tells you how much or little effort you must expend. Deep cranking and possibly hauling a fish or junk out of cover makes me want a lower gear ratio.
  8. You should think of the sytem. If up grade your reel and the rod isn't capable and the line is too heavy you aren't going to see results.
  9. Trevor, What do you want to accomplish by improving the performance? You can improve bearing quality and/or super tune the reel and get more distance in your casts and possibly make the reel a little smoother but I doubt you will be able to notice the difference in smoothness. If you want to reduce backlashes or accuracy that comes with practice and improving you skill level. All the suggestions have merit but you will have to decide on the cost/benefit to YOU!
  10. Twitching an original Rapala on the surface is very effective. Just pop it a time or 2 then let it rest before repeating. I usually work it back a foot or teo this way then crank it in and recast.

Attention to detail, bass knowledge, extremely focused, hard work, extremely competent fishing skills and a calmness that over comes negative issues. We forget that about 3 years ago years he did not make the cut in the classic.
  12. It's dangerous to take a big boat out on a big lake. the Edmond Fitzgerald sank. Know your boat, basic seamanship and when to run and if its to late to run where to hole up. I wouldn't be concerned about your boat on Smith Mountain so long as I had the basic skills and plugged in the brain.
  13. For me it's the total experience. I can't recall ever having a bad day fishing. However, there have been some real bad days catching. When I come in my wife always asks how the fishing was and I always say good. Over the years she has learned to ask about the catching and that varies. I guess even year I took my lower unit off on a rock in a remote lake in Ontario wasn't that bad. I got better in 3 days with a very lucky repair job so I fished the last of the first week and all of week 2.
  14. Years ago I re spooled every spring and some times during the year. I don't fish T's and never did to a large degree so I'm not concerned with missing a check or trophy. My reels are either in my rod box or in a heated garage with no electric motors to produce ozone. The line only sees sunshine when the rig is on the deck. I only re spool when I have shortened the line from nicks and break offs from snags to the point it adversely affects casting. I can't recall the last time I had a fish break me off. I have had an occasional bite off from a toothy critter. Now having said that if I was concerned about the integrity of the line I'd respool any time the doubt entered my mind. I'm a big believer that mental doubt causes poor catches than nearly anything else.
  15. I've had plastic baits in ZipLoc bag for years with no problems. I do keep colors seperate and I don't put the long stretch material isolated.
  16. Take it from a guy who also dropped out for several years you will be thrilled with almost anything you pick up. Although Ii have two crankbait rods I like graphite for most applications including cranking but I do use mono on my crankbail rigs. When I got back in Daiwa had just introduced their Magforce reels they were much better than what I had before and the quality of rods and reels has improved geometrically siince.
  17. I'm with Dodgeguy. Samller spool equals more line twist and tighter memory coils. I just don't like anything smaller than a 2000 series.
  18. At my age I've had lots of boats. M y current is 18'11' if I was looking for a new boat it would be over 20' with folding tongue on the trailer. Unless you are fishing very small waters big equals more deck space, more storage space and more comfortable.

Exactly as SharkHat said. The red becomes a darker color kind of a grey/blackl.

Buddy used red hooks on several 2 week long trips we made together. First the red chips off pretty quick, second I caught more fish than he did but then I always catch more fish than he does. Outside of the extra cost I see no difference using the red hooks.
  21. You will need to call Bass Pro Shops.
  22. In late 2008 I found a pretty large quantity of this line on sale at Wal-Mart for $1.00 per spool, so I bought several spoolsl. I didn't get to fish much last year and I'm wondering if those who have used the line would comment on it. I have spools with 6#, 8#, 10# and maybe some other. I could put it on spinning or baitcasting outfits. I will say it seems a bit stiff to me which propmted this question.
  23. I have a 19' Astro(yes it's old) with a carburated Merc 150. When I Bought the boat I had read a test run that said best economy was at 4400 rpms. Since I have read several other performance reports on other boats that also indicated in the mid 4000 rpm range. I can't recall if any of those reports were for 225hp or fuel injected.
  24. I use one of the rubber gizmo's that waqlleye fisher folks wrap there snells with spinners on.
  25. Either would be fine. Balance is the key and I would put the reel on the rod and check for balance and comfort.
