I pulled into Hedges Pond park and found the pond 75% iced over! Total bummer. I drove down the road to Great Herring, which was wide open. Great Herring is a BIG chunk of water for a kayak, but off I went, throwing a gold blade bait, brown/yellow hair jig, and goldish Rage Tail Menace. Water temps settled in at low 37.x. Great Herring is a pretty windy place, and today was on/off windy. All in all I marked fish sporadically and landed one yellow perch off a point in about 12' of water on the gold blade bait. That'll do it for 2018. All said and done, I averaged just under 3 fish per outing and was shut out 19 times. My average weight is somewhere around two pounds, likely just under. I had a couple fours and a bunch of threes, but overall two-ish pounds is my most common weight. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the membership. Let's nail down a date for a group lunch and talk about 2018 & 2019.

Long?!?!?! I’m just outside Boston MA and still have open water... I’m packing up and heading out to a little SMB pond this morning.... Sure won’t skip 100 yds, but if I’m lucky, catch a couple bass.

You too. I’m likely hitting Hedges in Plymouth. It’s only 25-ish acres and has smallies & yellow perch that average 2 and 1 pounds, respectively.

Yes, I fish out of a Lure 11.5 w/overdrive. I started with an Ascend 128T and upgraded after a couple years on the water. If you’re planning on a ‘fishing only’ vessel, a SOT is the way to go. There are many great brands out there. Make a list of what features you want and try to see them in person. If you can travel to the South Shore/Cape, Go Bananas and Bananas are two stores that carry all the major brands. Their website is: http://bananasinc.com/gbs/ I’ve been to both stores. Their Wareham store has the better kayak display. There’s also Billington Sea Kayak in Plymouth, located on Billington Sea. Doug Gray is the owner. He encourages paddling before buying. I bought my first FeelFree kayak from him. Top notch customer service and a really nice guy. Best of luck deciding on your ‘yak.

Catch fish in open water, in Massachusetts, every month and break 5 pound mark.

A perfect day for winter bass. I’m at work, so best of luck to those that get out today! Thursday’s weather looks good and I’m off. Might just head to Plymouth or Cape Cod to try my luck.

With water temperatures near freezing this time of year it’s a gold or perch blade bait.

Plymouth & Cape Cod should still be open. Kettle & deep waters won't freeze... yet. I know Long Pond in Plymouth takes a L O N G time to freeze. It's 100+' deep not far from the boat launch.

I’m a Pats fan and have to say that was an awesome play.... they deserve the win with that one! As far as a Superbowl winner, we’ll find out in January.

I launched at Hinckley’s at dawn. It was foggy with light wind. Water temps were 43.x. I packed up after 3 hours of nothing, tossing a gold blade bait, black/blue jig, and black maribou jig. The highlight here was a bald eagle chasing an osprey around. I moved over to Flax, figuring I’d have a chance at smallies and trout. I caught one shiny rainbow on a perch Rapala scatter rap. Flax’s water temp was 44.x. It was sunny and fairly windy. I left Flax and headed back to the main land, stopping at Hedges, still looking for a smallie. I launched a little after 1400 and stayed until dark. I continued with the same lures I used at Hinkleys until the last hour when I switched to a Mepps spinner and wacky rigged Senko. Wouldn’t you know the Senko would be the winner, netting a bright shiny 1-12 smallie in my lap. Water temps were 43.x - 44.x. Seven ponds over three days netted me two rainbows, one yellow perch, and one smallie. No matter, I fished with Mr. Aquarium, had a great lunch, and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: I caught fish in open water each month this year. Next year’s goal is the same and breaking the 5 pound mark added to the fun.

Thanks for the info Salty. Weather permitting I’ll try again today or tomorrow. Today was a washout. Tomorrow’s plan is KISS: 3/8 oz. black/blue jig, 1/8 oz. black maribou jig, and 1/4 oz. blade bait. If the jigs don’t pan out I’ve got 3 & 4” Senkos and a 1/16 oz. jig head ready to go.

I met up with Mr. Aquarium and one of his friends for some Cape Cod fishing. We hit Bucks, Josephs, and Hawksnest. Water temps were 44.x, 46.x, and 42.x, respectively. Mike caught a good bass at Bucks and a couple picks at Hawksnest. Phil and I struck out completely. I didn’t get so much as a nibble. Tough day fishing, good company, and excellent Cod Ruben sangies for lunch, so a good day...

I’m down the Cape for the weekend and Mr. Aquarium is planning on fishing Bucks pond down here too.... ADD: ... just walked out to my truck... we’re getting snow flurries in Dennis Port.

Fished Sheeps from 1100 to 1500 and Seymore from 1530 to dark. Threw a gold blade bait, black/blue hair jig, and a couple different Rapalas. Sheeps gave me a rainbow trout and yellow perch, both around a pound, and both on the blade bait. Seymour gave me nada. Water temps at sheeps was 46.x and low 42.x at Seymour. I’m here for the weekend. Tomorrow’s plan is a toss up between Flax, Bucks, and Hinckleys.
