Agree with all above about test driving. I believe that Appomattox and Backyard Boats both conduct test drive days in Annapolis, but I suppose they were likely earlier in the season. Give them a call.

I always crack the windows when parked, but that's as much because I air out the cigar smoke as much as for the gear. The only thing I'm careful to take out of the car after every trip is the JJ's Magic. Everything else stays.

Kevin, I don't know jack about the mechanics of a reel, but may I make a couple of suggestions? -post pics -spinning or baitcasting? -make and model? -parts leftover? -parts do move? but, hard to turn handle? -what lube/grease/oil did you use? -open it up and take a pic and post up

I tried to put a 1/16 oz mushroom head with 3 inches of elaztech attached on the bottom with my depthfinder reading 31 FOW. Do you know how long it took to get to the bottom? Me neither. Patience is not one of my strong suits.

Us fisherman are certainly a gullible lot.

I, too, am confused. What does this mean? .....large bass with fast rejection reactions....heavy cover.....heavy gauge wire hooks....are you really more worried about pulling a jig hook all the way through and out the bass' mouth? I had no idea that was a risk.

I was in northern WI last week. I very much hope you can get in a boat, even if you have to borrow a jon boat and row. I was an hour east on a very different lake, but had I been in your shoes, it would have been a very long week. Casting from the dock yielded a couple very short bass and a few bluegills. On the boat only a couple hundred yards from the dock, we caught 23 in. walleye, good numbers of LMB, couple SMB and had a nice musky follow. Best of luck to you. BTW, the bass from the dock were all caught on a ned rig. 'Similar' depth/bottom/vegetation conditions around the lake found bass at weed edges biting senkos, Cut-R's, jigs and frogs (at dusk.)

I'm a relatively recent convert to the church of jig bassin, but I am struggling a little with this point. Maybe it is because the jig rod is in my hands 80% of the time, but I've gotten somewhat picky and use my best reel for throwing the jig. -I want the smoothest free spooling action for pitching and punching and 'tossing' -The handles/grips have to be very comfortable - prolonged use, not to mention the hardest hooksets and dragging from cover make the handle/grips more important than I ever thought possible -My 'cheaper' reels seem to be great for spinnerbaits, worms, jerkbaits, even frogs, but I want my best, most comfortable and fastest reel on my jig rod. I agree that the rod is absolutely critical as well....and I won't debate which is more important to spend more money on, but don't go cheap on your jig rod reel.

I thought it was just mine. Bought a used one last year and after a few months, I was having the same problem, but didn't know how to describe it. Thanks. "Binding" is a good description; usually the first crank after a cast, the handle 'sticks'. I cleaned and oiled the handle and spindle shaft and the problem went away for about two weeks and then returned. Regrettably, I don't see that anyone else above has 'fixed' theirs yet.

Quick report for archival purposes..... From WI DNR site: "Shishebogama Lake is a 700 acre lake located in Vilas County. It has a maximum depth of 42 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. The lake's water is moderately clear." Stayed on the lake for four days last week with the family. LOTS of 1-2# LMB at the edges of visible weeds - throughout most of the lake. Nothing over 2 caught at any depth. 3 good smallies (~1.5#) - all shallow; all in bullrushes. Only saw one walleye all week, but it was a good one; my wife caught a 23 incher the first day out. Had one musky follow to the boat, but wouldn't bite - I estimate it was between 24" and 30". Areas around the island were most consistent - we could return there anytime and count on bunch of bass -- incidentally, the NE side of the island is where both the walleye and the musky were. LMB's mostly on junebug Cut-R's and black/blue jigs. Fun with frogs deep sent into the weeds from two hours before sunset. Funny, even 1# LMB's would hit big jigs -- here in VA, if I throw a large jig, I never catch anything less than 2. My folks had my son bobbering with worms and he was loving it....once I got him alone and gave him a senko to launch, it was all over....there's another bass fisherman in the family.

Wasn't long ago that I rolled my eyes at all the technique-specific rods. I admit that I have come around some. But, I am still a ways from wanting/buying a 'spinnerbait rod'. I find that I throw lighter spinner baits just fine on M-ish rods and larger ones on MH-ish rods. Maybe its partly because I don't spend a ton of time with this bait, but I just haven't found that, for me, spinnerbait fishing requires anything all that different or special in a baitcasting rod. What am I missing?

My first world gear problem: I have one more baitcasting rod than reels. Found a great deal on a reel I wanted. But the site had an even better deal on a rod I want. When I receive them in a few days, I'm going to have one more rod than reels. I will, no doubt, be shopping for a reel by the end of next week.

I'm totally unfamiliar with pro tournaments, so forgive if this is a dumb question, but how do they handle the release? At the ramp like locals? One location? Multiple locations? Is it a secret? Different each day? I, for one, would want to be fishing the next couple days in the 'area' near where the tourny fish have been released.

Not trying to be an azz....(it comes naturally) -- I am leading, perhaps too circumspectly, to that part of the discussion where we all tell him that it takes time...time to figure out what size, shape, color...the bass want.....time to figure out what head shape works for him with his bottom composition, cover, etc....time to feel competent detecting a hit on a jig.....then time to get comfortable with his hookset.....

Not that he tossed it in really hard? So....how much is a fair bit?

Thanks a ton, guys. I have one (or more?) golf ball retrievers gathering dust in the basement that are going to be repurposed. I fish a large tidal bay that is almost all 3-5' deep and I think the retractable pole is the way to start. I also like the drag chain idea better than an anchor for now -- looking into a trolley, as well.

You must have invisible chocks back there. If I try that, my yak slides back away from the car. I'm getting better, but it is still a bit of a chore to load and unload on/from a full-size SUV. I use Thule 'Glide and Set' - carpeting on back saddles allows it to slide up and rubber on the front saddles holds it fairly firm.
