  1. The deepest I normally fish a swimbait would be about 60 feet. I like the ROF 16 for this. THe LA slider ( replaced by the Bass Grande) runs really well down to about 80-100.
  2. very similar. they all have comparable action. the rising son is the slowest sinking bait of all time, so it runs from the surface (try a buzzbait type retrieve ) down to a couple feet, the k9 sinks pretty quick but had a bottom treble so is better for mid column 5-25ft. the osprey will run well mid column too, but it really shines in bottom contact/cover situations. The rising son has the liveliest tail, then the k9, then the osprey.
  3. A proven bait. Not high on the realism or durability factors. Very well poured though. They make a few different styles of baits. I dont throw the treble baits anymore, as I have the 3:16 Rising Son and K9. There is just something about these things that gets murdered! The Osprey Tournament Talon 6" is a sweet mid depth bait (6'-30') and is better for slow rolling through cover and rocky structure due to the top hook.
  4. Well, I think Bizz is 6'7" and when you combine that with a rod that is around 8', you get the picture.... After I cut 3 inches off Jays rod, it was still 8'4" long. You remember the 8' backbounce rod I was throwing the Hud with at Guntersville? Fourbiz's rod makes it look like a lightweight. It is far and away the heaviest freshwater rod I have built. That rod is a beast. Ronnie Ronnie, that thing is a beast! I love it though. It spits out 12" biats like they didnt even exist. ;D
  5. Depends on the rod. The one that Alpster made me, if you try and lob a bait, it goes about 75ft. If you cast it (snapping the wrist) i've got 250ft+ casts with 7 ounce baits.
  6. The Loomis swimbait rods are the best big bait rods I have thrown to date. PERIOD!
  7. BINGO! Fancy baits don't catch fish, skilled fisherman do. Don't believe me? Check the golf business. How many of you guys have or know a guy with $2,000 worth of golf gear who couldn't sniff at breaking 100? The answer.....PLENTY! Nice looking baits, can't imagine they distance themselves from other swim baits all that much (I think Huddleston owns the record courtesy of Steve Kennedy's domination at the Delta last year) by an order of 4X the cost but if they do it for you, then more power to you champ... Need some evidence? I just watched a video on swim baits out on Castaic in CA called "Big Bait Posse" and the guys make their own out of wood on a band saw and catch giant fish. Know he's there, put the bait where he lives at the right time under the right conditions and you'll improve your chances of catching fish. $80 is $80 bucks dude ranch and if this were a golf discussion I'd say spend the money on lessons not a new $500 driver unless you absolutely know how to use it.... Check eBay for evidence of failed driver, iron, wedges, and putter purchases.... You can't buy a game and just because you shelled out big $$$ for baits doesn't mean you're going to catch more or larger fish than anyone else. My guess is that 3-16 sells a lot of great baits and the large % of customers who will shell out the cake for them will have moderate success with them just like the majority of baits sold world wide regardless of price which is why there are so many to choose from. Most fishing equipment is designed to catch fisherman not fish and they work to the tune of a several hundred million dollar per year business conservatively speaking. Nothing against the company, I hope they continue to do well and bring American jobs to the State that they are in but with regard to the price, it is what it is fellas and that is out of reach for the majority of anglers tournament or otherwise. If you can fish, that means you can first find fish, pattern them, and know how to present the right baits to those you are targeting. If you can't, you can't. LMAO...... Your guess pales in comparison to reality. On 3:16's. Sure am glad i didnt waste my money on Glx's and GUESSING!
  8. Ahhhh. grasshoppa! Sure looks like a tasty, early season kokanee salmon to me.... the fish tend to agree, lol! Plus I think you would have to fight my girlfriend for it, its one of her favorite swimbaits to throw, haha.
  9. Split rings on *almost* all hardbaits. Exceptions being slammers (eye screw is too big for a ring, so i use a snap) and certain other baits. Deadstick/ 3:16 Real Deal.
  10. Best hard swimbaits on the planet. BAR NONE! I've got a bunch of his hardbaits. Worth every last penny! Thinking about getting a perch just to have. Very sweet pattern.
  11. It is a matter of preference i think. I will NOT throw anything but the 9" original. There is just something about that bait that gets munched. But there are plenty og guys that whack fish on the X2. Color is not massively important. hitch is a good all around baitfish color better hurry though word on the street says that mike shaw is gonna taper production down to a trickle making these baits very hard to come by
  12. Well , I have been lax on reports so here goes. been pretty lame the last month or so but.... Nice topwater smallie. This is what happens when the net gets stuck and the 10+ takes control of the fight. That is a 150lb split ring and an Owner 3/0 Stinger hook Couple of 4-5's out of Clear Lake during the HBCII prefish. Spent a week flyfishing in Colorado. It was a nice change. Caught a bunch of fish including some wild 15-17 inch rainbows. Caught a beatiful Rio Grande Cutthroat trout, but didnt have my camera that day . Also got some small browns and brookies out of Rocky Mountain National Park.
  13. Swimbaits work great in water that is everything from gin clear to chocolate milk. I've caught some big fish on the super subtle huddleston in water that was 4" vis. welcome back!
  14. yeah WII, a bit I like the shimano 300 rounds for 20lb. definitely not for 25lb+ and bigger baits. The Luna 300 is similar in size to a shimano 400. Generally speaking, I just feel more comfortable with the 400's. THe 400 TE is really tall, the Cardiff 400 is REALLY wide, and the Calcutta 400B is THE perfect swimbait reel. There are plenty of guys out there using low profile reels and with 2 or 3 exceptions (curado 300, quantum cabo, Daiwa BBS) i think it is just a countdown till they blow up, at least with big baits, not foofy little paddle tail tubes . I have fragged a couple low pro shimano's. I just like knowing that I have plenty of line and plenty of reel. With a 15+ bulldogging around, I don't want to be stuck with my johnson in my hand because i was trying to make a little reel "work". With these big baits and big fish there are just too many little nuances that can ruin the whole thing. I lost a 10+ at the boat a month ago, because my net was 6" out of place and got hung up when i reached for it. That won't happen again, and neither will a sissy reel! btw, check your pms
  15. One of my absolute favorite things in the world is watching a 10" trout get wrecked. Gets my blood pumping everytime. P.S., if you see this happening, I suggest placing a swimbait in between the bass and the trout ;D

  17. For less than 60, your options are: MS Slammer. Not my favorite wake bait , but a dang good one, thats for sure. I fished the BBZ floater for awhile and got a 9lb 10ozer on it, but i dont throw it anymore, gave it away actually.
  18. The majority of the time. Welcome to the unsung life of a big baiter.
  19. Aboslutely sweet bait matt! And the rods.....mmmmmm.... where do I sign???? ;D
  20. its not the head shape that causes the action, its the fact that the body is interrupted by joints. because there are these interruptions, it creates vorticies in the space where the joint is and it pushes it to one side, and then the flow of the water pushes it back to the other side and starts another vortex which pushes it to the other side and then it continues. at least that is my interpretation of everything i have read about what makes lipless baits swim. Head weigthing is mildly important in a lipless bait. section proportions (length of head) will have the greatest effect on a baits action. looks good dave. the chain is a very out of the box idea. i do not think it will hold up either though. it isnt tensile strength that i would worry about, it is the repeated stress of flexing one way to the other. Ken Huddleston used sevenstrand cable through his very first prototype of what would become the first Castaic Lure Co. Hardbait. Within a day the cable was failing , merely from bending back and forth. im just not sure that the chain has enough inherent give in it to survive. I'm suprised you didnt photo finish it! Very cool man!
  21. Cool vid russ. you gotta start grinding those fish in man, those headshakes are bad news.
  22. Sam is the MAN!!! When I first signed up, Sam mentioned that he was upgrading his on board charger. I asked him what he wanted for his old one and he INSISTED on giving it to me, free of charge. What a guy, and a great sense of humor too!
  23. very very cool dude. If only there were some resourceful site that had some kind of article for people who are trying to start swimbaiting, and might need help picking out gear...... http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/swimbait_gear.html'>Ahem......
  24. Night fishing (oversized worms): Black Black Grape Dropshot/texas/shakey: white/silver (prism shad, white, natural shad, etc) pinkish purple ( margarita mutilator, etc) smokey color ( :-X ;D) dark green (aarons magic, green weenie, etc) oxblood I only carry one variant of each type, dont think it really matters if you use aarons or green weenie. Color isnt horribly important. K.I.S.S.
