Yes, you can calculate how many turns of the handle you must make to get your desired amount of backing. My spool holds 120 yards of line, so I will spool half of it up with backing. With a 6.4:1 gear ratio reel or 28 IPT, its around 50-60 turns of the handle. I will just estimate, because it doesn't have to be exactly 60 yards.

B+ I just recently got back into fishing last spring/early summer and I don't know why I stopped in the first place. Got my first baitcaster by the beginning of summer and eventually got 2 other rods. I didn't catch any lunkers, but I rarely skunked. Good enough for me.

With the new technology we have today, rods have been improved to handle braided lines. I think it's safe to say that pretty much all rods can handle it. Now, l would agree with the others about cheaper rods.

How did you hook up the fish grip to the small luggage scale? A big split ring? And how much does the fish grip add to the weight of it?

Very important. When you're flipping sometimes the fish will just lightly eat it, and you won't realize what has happened if your rod is not very sensitive.
