Fly fishing equiptment for Largemouth?
Robert, I have a Sage VPS 3 pc 4wt and it's a marvelous pack rod. I also have a G-Loomis FR1089 GLX 9wt (this rod is incredible). I have one Abel TR reel on a 1wt Orvis. 4 other Orvis Fly rods and a couple of customs I built myself. It's hard to beat Sage, Loomis and Abel quality. JMHO Ronnie

Placement of Reel Seat
The awesome thing about building your own rods is, you can have it your way. There are as many methods as there are rod builders. I will share mine and hope it is helpfull to you. I will set the reel seat on the rod blank with the reel I will be fishing with, and move it untill the blank is a little tip heavy. Masking tape will hold it till you make up your mind. I don't like rods to be perfectly balanced at the reel seat, I like them a little tip heavy. This is a personal thing for me, you should set it up the way you like it. I mark the reel seat with a china marker and dry fit the cork or eva grips. With the cork/eva (not glued) and the reel seat taped back in the placed marked I will tape on the guides with the "new concept" spacing. (See www.rodbuilders.org and search for new concept) and hold it again and make sure I am pleased with the feel of the rod. Mark the guide spacing, location of the seat & grips and do a static test to make sure of the guide spacing (you want the line to be concentric with the blank under a load). Adjust the guides to the proper spacing. Line up all the components carefully. Glue up the grips, glue up the reel seat use arbors or fabric tape to center the seat on the blank, wrap and finish the guides and go fishing with a custom rod. JMHE Hope this is helpfull Ronnie

Theodore Roosevelt- View on being a American
I agree with you guys and Roosevelt too. The big problem is, that we don't talk as loud and we don't demand our own way as well as the "other-americans". Sorry for the synicism. This is a sore spot with me. I will leave it alone so I don't get into trouble. God bless you guys Ronnie

Fly fishing equiptment for Largemouth?
I have fished for bass & panfish with fly fishing gear for 30 years. I use everything from 1wt with floating bugs for bluegill & perch to a 12wt with clousers & decievers for stripers. My favorite LM bass on the fly rig is a 9' 2-piece 6wt with floating (WF) line and a hand tied wooly bugger or popping bug. Nothing in the world like catching a nice bass on a fly rod. It's a break from the ordinary and very effective when nothing else works. I rarely go out without a flyrod on board. JMHO Ronnie

The_Muddy_Man Strikes Again!
I did get Floogered! LOL Dominick gave me a President spinning reel on the Fork trip. Beautiful reel, I'm looking forward to fishing with it!. Just need a day or two with out rain & cold (#$@&%$ weather). You just can't say Muddy without saying "he's da man". God bless you Dom. Ronnie

Any other carpenters in here?
I am a land surveyor in NJ and I do work for many home builders and addition contractors. I have built a couple of houses and am currently fixing a 100 year old house that I bought 8 years ago. This one will never be finished, but, it's home. LOL Phil, If you want to try the Manasquan Reservoir sometime, let me know. I can have my boat in the water in 15 minutes. Ronnie

Swimbait reel, need help!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought a 'like new' Calcutta 400 on ebay for $175. I am very pleased with it. You have to be patient and look around, there are deals to be found. Ronnie

I know this has happened to you?
I have caught enough fish right at the boat, that I almost never "burn it in" for another cast. Bass will often follow your bait for quite a distance before taking it. JMHE Ronnie

worm fishing
gjw77, Try a 7 1/2" Culprit worm (Black Shad is my favorite color) with a 1/8 oz bullet weight. Don't peg the weight. Cast it into fishy cover and let it sink to the bottom and sit still for 30 seconds (count one mississippi two mississippi etc.). Drag it along the bottom with the rod tip a foot or so at a time and let it sit for 15 seconds. Do this all the way back to the boat or bank. Watch your line feel for the most subtle bite then set the hook quick and hard. Fishing this slowly is nerve racking but very effective. I hope you catch a monster. Ronnie

Are you surprised ???
I agree with Bob101, 15 oz over 10lbs where I live is the State record. I get to fish once or twice a week (my kids think they are supposed to eat every day. LOL) I live vicariously through you guys that fish several days a week and catch monster bass. I will take all the 4, 5 and 6lb bass I can catch. Live well full of fish or skunked, I'm just proud to participate. God Bless Ronnie

anyone know their snakes
Looks like a COPPERHEAD to me. I have killed 100s of them and have a couple of skins tanned on my wall. Ronnie

finishing off a reel seat without a foregrip
That looks real nice, I will try it for sure. Do you plan to leave it as is or will you run a thread wrap up to it? I had thought about trying to push an O-ring between the real seat & the blank, but if the seat fits properly, there is not enough room. Nice work as always and a great idea. Keep em comming. Ronnie

The Beast- and a few others...
Keith, You make the prettiest grips around, and this one is no exception. Good work as usual! I get why you call it "The Beast". The 8' Loomis BackBounce blank I am building my swimbait rod on only comes in a GL2. I guess sensitivity becomes less important when your rod doubles as a mast for the emergency sail. LOL I had a preformed grip, so I used it on the BB because I don't know where else I can use a 12" grip. LOL I will post some pics when I'm farther along. I am anxious to fish with the swimbait rod. I got a Calcutta 400 to go on it. There are no California hawgs in NJ so my swimbait rod will double as a muskie/salmon rod. Canada is only 5 hours from me. The trick is finding time to go. Work gets in the way of fishing way too often. LOL Ronnie

What reel are you using for flipping?
Shimano Calais CL200A with 50lb Power Pro, mostly pitching in heavy cover with a 7'6" Loomis FS904 Flippin stick. Smoother than the day I bought it. Ronnie

One less pond to fish.
We are raising up a whole culture that takes no responsibilty for their oun actions and could care less about anything other than their own selfish gratification. One of my favorite things to do is, when I see someone throw down a piece of trash I go immediately and pick it up right in front of them. It's like handing them a STUPID sign. LOL Ronnie

IMX or Legend Elite
There is considerable difference in the IMX and GLX blanks. I have several of both. Here I am biased again, but I am convinced that there is no rod more sensitive, balanced and fishable than a G Loomis GLX. JMHO Ronnie
-
IMX or Legend Elite
All are my builds, sjr spinning, CR722 casting, MBR844 casting, CR724 casting, FS904 Flippin stick all are spiral wrapped. I've got the handles glued up on a Loomis BackBounce 8' Swimbait rod and will start wrapping it soon. Ronnie

IMX or Legend Elite
I have 5 Loomis IMX rods and have never fished with a Legend Elite, so I am a little biased. The loomis rods are a joy to fish with and are stellar performers. JMHE Ronnie

Am I expecting too much
I love my Mgs!!!! Smooth as silk after 1000s of casts. My Calais's are the same, strong, silent, smooth as butter. My Calcutta's are the same, incredible reels. I really don't understand the problems Huskerto is having. Mine are older reels and have been around for a while. Maybe Shimano QC is starting to suffer. That would be a dissapointment, but my reels are excellent and a joy to fish with. Still in the posse..... Ronnie

ALL MY COMPLAINING PAID OFF

THANKS A MILLION Redline Robert!!!!!!1
Robert is Da Man!!! Came back in from the field today and found a totally excellent "BOAT BUDDY" on my door step. Redline Robert sent it to me OVERNIGHT no less. I have rheumetoid arthritis and this fancy gizmo will be a life saver for me when loading my boat by myself. I always get nervous when I have to try balance on my mistake knees on the trailer tongue while getting my boat winched up on the trailer. You guys who were at Fork will remember me hobbling around like a 100 year old. I am really proud of this awesome gift from Robert and just want to say THANK YOU! I appreciate it very much. :) Ronnie
