  1. Lake prince has 25-30lb bowfin. i've seen them..... Them bowfin got teeth that'd make a Piranha jealous. I would start with heavy mono, BBG is fine ( I use Sufix tri+). When using Flouracarbon as a running line I've had several fail when "shocked" (like a back lash or over-hard hook set will cause).. When using mono, If you figure 10lb of line strength / ounce of lure you'll rarely break one off.
  2. Great job from start to finish!!
  3. Far beyond the fish..... 40 yards is generally fine.
  4. Try a Diana SL-30-SHV with 300 yards of 20 Lb.... Bass reels got nothing on a heaver backlash when your tossing an 8 ounce sinker and 4 ounces of bait.... Them be professional overspools......
  5. I'm trying to learn to skip jigs. I build my own rods. What should I be looking for (action, length, power) to skip 3/8-1/2 oz jigs with trailers?
  6. Building a rod requires neither huge skill, engineering knowledge or magic (although the ability to build good juju in a rod has value). You can build a great, top of the line blank for under $150. Many companies sell blanks and components and will freely give you the knowledge you need to do it. Catching a chunk on a rod (or lure) you built is an awesome feeling. The arsenal I have is due to me having the guts to build my first. Unfortunately, it is addictive..(as judged by the 30+ rods at my house....) Contact any of the BR sponsors, they'll get you started.
  7. For situations where stretch is preferred. I use Sufix Tritanium +. I use it in fresh and salt water. No complaints, while there is stretch; it is limited, it has great abrasion resistance, and ties great knots. I've landed fish in the surf over 100lbs with the 20lb sufix tri +. All braid applications include flouro leader. Only straight flouro is swimbaits and flipping / pitching in clear water. I use Segaur Red label for flouro. Good Luck with your choice.
  8. That will get bit in the Chicahominy or NW river..... Or Lynnhaven inlet, Poqouson Flats .... Latimer Shoals.... Very nice work!!!!!!
  9. I think you'll appreciate the extra 6" on a 7' when trying to throw buzz baits across a point, into the wind...... It may be that my heart is still in the surf, but I always prefer the longer option when choosing a technique rod. There are times when a longer cast makes the difference, use the length you can best control with optimum distance....
  10. Sufix tri+. I use fro 6-20lb. Best sensitivity, abrasion and knot quality i've found.
  11. Believe it or not, I've had absolutely no problem with seagur red label..... I've tried others. But the red label comes out on top everytime...
  12. I have communicated to bps headquarters 3 times on the poor selection and rude work force at the Hampton Virginia store. The Richmond Va. Store isn't much better. Thank God for places like Greentop, Bobcats, fishing frenzy (NC), Nuese sports shop. These "mom and pop' stores are on business because they want to. 90% of my fishing money is spent at these and 10% on line. Bps is last choice, worst case scenario. I mean, really,I contacted corporate 3 times and no response. Screw them.
  13. I've been trying to get the word out. The envirowhackos have evolved. Instead of suing and simply making lawyers rich. The eco-whacko's have taken policy level jobs in all levels of government. They are now writing the laws and rules that continue to erode locations and opportunities for sportsman. It will take all of us to win the battle. Failing to fight this battle has already lost us the best surf fishing spot in the world, The Point in Buxton, N.C.
  14. First: G.Loomis 1448, blue over silver, alconite guides, sic tip. Best sea monster was a 71/2' manta Ray that was foul hooked. Still use it for 6oz and bait, or 6oz spoons.. Favorite: MHX CB843 purple with silver trim, alconite guides... Love throwing cranks with this rod.
  15. Fuji alconite.... Love the black and they're lite and they have never failed me.
  16. I'm looking at my 6th shoulder or arm surgery since 1999. Exercise and stretch your upper arms and shoulders as much as you can. Shoulders deteriorate. Think about how much energy is leveraged against your shoulders during a hook set, or a fight. Protect you arms and shoulders. When they're bad fishing can become a chore instead of fun.
  17. We won a tournament by going to Berkeley gulp ripple mullet.... Thats a saltwater bait. I don't think the fish can read so it's probably not too big an issue....
  18. Dude. You are trying something that takes a lot of practice and patience.. Anyone who would bash your first attempt, has never tried anything...... Great start!!
  19. Remember to peel your shrimp and let them dry out on the sun for a few minutes before you use them, they last on the book a lot longer.
  20. Remember to peel your shrimp and let them dry out on the sun for a few minutes before you use them, they last on the book a lot longer.
  21. MHX cb845 Has the back to get them out the brush, but soft enough not to pull hooks...
  22. Topwater, custom painted popper Cranks, wec mutt, rapala scatter, dt10 Worms- yamamato senko Craw -zoom Jigs- mrsooperbass or seibert
  23. 8lb suffix tri + for deep cranking, 10lb suffix trip+ for shallow. I've yet to find s line that ties, has great abrasion resistance and nice feel better then suffix.
