  1. I agree. I think it doesn't seem fair to judge one bass the same as another. Anyone who has ever fished beds during the spawn knows that one lure or color may get a bass to pick it up, but the next bed you fish might be totally different. It's almost like bass have their own personalities. So regardless of what color the bass actually sees, it almost seems that bass randomly go after on lure over another, but I do think there would be an advantage in knowing how the bass perceives color. At least it would level out the playing field a bit more.
  2. My PB was 21 inches long with a 19 inch girth. Caught on a Rapala X-rap. I really need to get a picture of that mount.
  3. Yeah I just ordered both of them. How easy is it to get an even, clean finish with the perma gloss? Does it just take some practice?
  4. I really like the idea of self leveling Especially for my first few.
  5. You can go ahead and post the link, Sam. If you've seen any posts I've made in the tackle making forum, you'll see that I've been dropping loads of money into making my own jigs. Seems ironic right? lol. I've been buying everything by large amounts though. I hope I don't miss out on getting one of those books though!
  6. Thank you. I'll look that up right now. Bout to order something tonight. It's between the Devcon 2 ton and this I'd say.
  7. What size split ring do I need to connect the blade to the jighead? I'm going to order them online and I don't know anything about split ring sizes.
  8. Just loaded up on some of Harbor Freights powder paint. Reviews have also said it's some really tough stuff.
  9. But what about the contrast to the fish's surroundings in the lines that worked compared to the ones that didn't? That has to count for something. You'd think that a fluorescent white line out in the lake would show up before anything else even to fish solely due to how it contrasts with everything else. I guess I shouldn't have even mentioned the fact that the fluorescent yellow is the most visible. It is to us. I guess I'm really just trying to prove to myself that bass can in fact see a lot like we do, but evidence from this test cleary states different.
  10. I totally agree with you aavery, but i'm not buying the bass a dress, I'm just trying to get her to bite lol. So I guess it doesn't really matter. Jokes aside, you make an interesting conjecture. If we knew exactly how the bass sees ....well anything... we could probably find a way or two to manipulate that in our favor.
  11. Good read. However, it seems like the experiment would have been better if they would have presented the fish with all of the colors instead of just two. Then once the fish reached criterion with the braided strand, they should have randomly mixed all of the lines leaving the same line as the reward line for the single strand. THEN they should have seen how well the fish could discern between the lines. This would leave the fish to only use color discernment to find the reward line instead of going back to the same spot to pull on the line or merely guessing between the two. Although not perfect, I think this would add more control to the experiment and eliminate some of the randomness. It's weird how the fluorescent white line seemed to be the worst to reach criterion, but the clear line was one of the best Look out Berkley Nanofil! Haha who knows though. I don't think the bass would blatantly shy away from it because of its vivid appearance because fluorescent yellow was one of the most successful and probably the most visible. However, like I mentioned in the original post, bass in well lit environments are believed to hide their rods behind their cones. This could explain their difficulty to associate the fluorescent white line with food, but still they did well with the clear line. So it must be something else. What I would like to see is the same experiment done in low light and darkness to see how the fluorescent white matched up.
  12. Do you wire tie or thread? I have some 28 gauge copper wire that should work well I think.. Wrapping the wire around and then twisting till it breaks at the base seems like the best way to go about it. Where do you get molds that fit hooks like Owners and Gammies? All the Do-it molds I've seen recommend Mustad. I'd like to try different hooks like EWG's and what not.
  13. Haha it seems like they should. If you don't mind me asking, how long and what temp do you cure your jigheads?
  14. I have read that curing is the key, but I've never owned a single jig where the paint doesn't get absolutely demolished after one trip. I fish a lot of shallow rock. Most companies cure their paint with heat right?
  15. I'm pretty much just looking for a jig head that won't chip. It's possible I believe. I have some UV clear coat on the way. It's not the spray. It's a water based epoxy (I think) that you put on with a brush. I figured it would only aid in the durability of the paint as well as the appearance. I read some reviews that said it wasn't too good though. Kinda worried, but oh well. I'm gonna pick up some of Harbor Freights powder tomorrow. Thought about making a fluid bed. Is it worth it? Is it messy?
  16. I plan on powder coating then adding a clear coat. Is that okay? lol I'm new at this. I might just forget the whole clear coat thing all together if harbor freights powder paint is as tough as they say it is. By the way, can you mix two different powders to get a different color? Could I mix yellow and black powder to get a green pumpkinish color?
  17. Thanks. Just how durable is the D2T?
  18. fishingskirts.com is a good spot if you want unpainted jigheads. The paint chips real easy off the painted ones you buy there, but it's up to you. Siebert outdoors is of course a good spot.
  19. I'm gonna start clear coating my painted jig heads mostly for aesthetic reasons, but I like the idea of extra durability as well. What is the best clear coat out there as far as durability and whatever else I should consider?
  20. If you like living rubber mixed in your jigs, go to Living Rubber's website and check out there reptile print. I can't wait till mine get here to start creating my own.
  21. On Black Friday I went fishing, but as part of the Black Friday sale on Tackle warehouse, I bought a bunch of stuff to create a tie my own jigs. I also bought a ton of skirts and what not from fishingskirts.com.
  22. I use a palomar knot almost 100 % of the time with fluoro with no "mishaps" due to what I would believe to be the knot. The reason fluoro lacks knot strength is because it is a lot harder than mono and braid. After you fish for a while the knot digs in and cuts itself. A double uni knot or san diego jam knot would allow the knot to not clinch in on itself as much but I rarely tie either one.
  23. To the OP, where I live creek crawfish aren't always the same color as lake crawfish. Close, but not quite. Also, where I fish, the soft shell crawfish are what the bass prefer and are usually around 3 inches with green/brown tops with orange/tan bottoms and accents.
  24. This ^^^^^^^^^^ There can be many factors that influence crayfish coloration. Looking at pictures on the internet will help, but if you really want to know, you need to go out and catch some. I'd take note of the cover that's around where you catch them as this can influence color.
