  1. I know I probably should have, but the boat was a steal for the price I paid, even with maybe having to have the carbs cleaned. It seems to me that its getting the needed fuel on start up. It starts at barely turning the key, its just like it starves itself out for gasoline after 30 seconds or so. If we manually work the throttle right next to the carbs it runs without stalling. It only stalls during idle and when using the shifter.
  2. I have a 2008 Triton that I just bought from a guy I know. His boat has sat for a couple of years with treated (Sta-bil) gas. I haven't gotten the title in yet so I haven't been able to register it yet. I've been trying to service it and tune it up myself before taking it out. My father and I are sharing this boat and we have tried running the motor a few times and here is what is happening. The engine is a Mercury 50 HP 2-Stroke. It has a hard time starting (has to be choked) at first. After we get it started it will run in idle for about 20-30 seconds before stalling. If you start it and put it into forward gear it immediately stalls. If you choke it during idle it stalls immediately. It idles and sputters a little for about 20 seconds then it idles down so low that it evenually shuts off. It almost acts like it is running out of gas but the primer bulb is priming up solid. You can smell gas pretty heavy but there is no apparant leaks. So far we have done the following: Changed the lower unit lube. Changed the batteries Changed the spark plugs Syphoned the old gas and filled it with new and added a bottle of seafoam. Checked the fuel filter and it is clear. After each of these things the motor is idling better and smoother and quieter, but still stalls out after 30-45 seconds. I'm not really sure what else to do. My father thinks it may be a float in a carb but we are too afraid to attempt to take the carbs out to inspect them for fear of not being able to re-install them correctly. Anybody have any suggestions on what I need to do? The boat looks brand new and everything seems in great shape except for this one issue.
  3. Keep in mind that a spinnerbait does fairly well in weeds because the arm and blade protects the hook. Trailer hooks will definately help catch finicky bass but is prone to becoming more hung up. It's risk, reward.
  4. Ordered a couple from Wholesale Marine. Had 1A model ignition keys for Mercury Marine 2002 to present. Hopefully these fit my ignition switch.
  5. Went Monday and picked it up. Spend all day cleaning and organizing it. Also went ahead and serviced it and put a brand new cranking and trolling battery in it. As soon as the title comes in I plan to go straight to DMV and get the registration all set. Turned it into a perfect rig for my needs!
  6. I meant to type purchased instead of purshased. Will Bass Pro Shops carry them? Aren't they a Mercury dealer?
  7. Where might one purchase additional ignition keys for a Mercury Outboard? I purshased a boat recently from a private seller but he only had one key to it. It has 1A stamped on it and I'd like to have 2 or 3 others to keep as back up.
  8. Thanks for the great info guys! I don't have a good full pic yet just this one. This is just a quick photo taken when I went to see the boat for the first time.
  9. Finally found a boat for a deal that I like and am able to do. It is a 2008 Triton VT 17 Tournament Sport with a 50HP Mercury 2-Stroke. The person I am buying it from has kept the boat in his garage and it has less than 30 hours running time on it. Can someone explain to me a little about the outboard and how to maintain it. A few questions I have that I am having trouble finding answers to are this: Does a 2 stroke take an oil filter, is that only 4 strokes? The engine has only been on the water twice in two years since it's last service. I know it needs serviced since it has been sitting and have everything ready to change the lower unit lube, change the spark plugs, grease the prop and wheel bearings. He told me it takes the two-stroke engine oil that you load into the top tank of the engine, and he only runs premium gasoline in it. I am gonna treat it with seafoam in the oil and gasoline. Anybody familiar with this engine that would be willing to give me a little info would be greatly appreciate. This is my first ever bass boat and I cannot wait to get it ready to get on the water.
  10. My family is in Kingsland. I've grown up fishing private ponds for LMB in that area. We have always saltwater fished the St Marys River for whiting. I was unaware you could even bass fish it.

Studied up on this type of retrieve for a few months. Put it into action in Georgia a couple of weeks ago. Boy is that a fun way to fish, and flat out produces results. I'll always go to a shaky head when I'm wanting to throw a worm first from now on.
  12. I would love to purchase a 175 TWX in Red under that deal. I just assumed that a $17,000 purchase would be about a $300 a month payment and never pursued it. If I could get a boat with a monthly of $150 or under I might consider it. I have 4 lakes within an hour of my house. I fish out of a Bass Raider right now. Would love something to take my kids in and that we would have plenty of room to stand up in.
  13. What about the 160 or the 175 TWX? Do they offer the same financing plan for those?
  14. I'm from the Beckley area. We fish Plum Orchard (My Avatar), Lake Stephens, RD Bailey Lake, and Summersville Lake. My fam also has a camp on the Greenbrier River near Talcott, right outside of Hinton.
  15. There has been 3 over 10lbs each caught out of it. My largest was 3 pounds caught on that RSR around midnight friday night. Most others were between 1 and 2 lbs but still had a great weekend! Any bass fish is fun to catch. I'm jealous of you guys that have access to waters like that year round. Makes me wanna move south LOL.
  16. Traveled from WV to visit some family in southern GA for a long weekend. They happen to have an 8 acre private pond that was built in the early 70s. It is a great fishery with bream, largemouth bass, and grass carp. The whole front half of the pond that edges their home is grass bank and the whole backside is downed structure with fallen trees and a few bushes. Got to fish there on Friday evening through Sunday night. The bass appeared to be fanning beds and boy they were feeding to prepare for spawn. I caught around 15-20 bass per day. By far, the best producing lure I fished was the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad. I used the black/silver with orange bottom. I don't know if it is because they were feeding or just because they've never seen anything like that before but I caught bass in all sections of the pond at all times of the day. I also caught quite a few bass on a black/red buzzbait, a green pumpkin shaky head, a white spinnerbait with a single gold colorado blade, and a silver/glimmering blue double willow leaf bladed spinnerbait.
  17. Son Dads Outfitters. I know the guys personally will do you a fine job. http://www.sondadsnewriversmallmouth.com
  18. Midnight Special at night, baby. Slow crank it with a trailer hook just fast enough to keep it off the bottom.
  19. I've caught more topwater fish on a buzzbait than anything else.
  20. Was fishing a private pond in GA once at night from the bank. It was so dark I couldn't hardly see my hand in front of my face. Was throwing a big midnight special spinnerbait. Thing felt funny as I was reeling it. Reeled it in and saw a big clump of grass on it. Grabbed the lure to pick the grass off and the dang grass latched onto my hand and started screetching. I started hollering and shaking my hand up and down and flung the grass down only to see it flutter away. That clump of grass was a freaking bat. Gave me the creeps for a year after that while fishing at night. Gave me goosebumps typing this.
  21. How often do you throw a different lure? Do you fish the same area with multiple lures before moving on? Do you cover a lot of water with a single lure thinking it will turn up in the right spot? I have a tendency to start with what I think is the best bait and then cover a lot of water to start. Sometimes I'll throw that bait for an hour in consecutive casts until I finally decide to change. May be I'm just too stubborn. What are some of your methods?
  22. I would fish it a season or two before i judge the type of pond it is. Chances are if there are a solid number of bass then there are a few hogs lurking around. I'd say you just haven't tapped into one yet.
  23. Was it the noisy flapper? If so, what was your retrieve?
