  1. The St. Croix Avid has been the best bang for the buck I have found so far.
  2. Invisix gets my vote. Abrazx would also be a good choice. I have also used Trilene 100% FC for deep cranks but I like Invisix more.
  3. My personal preference would be the 6'8" M XF for jigs and worms. It has a stiffer tip which I like for weightless senkos. Also, I seem to like the old avid better.
  4. 7' M Fast is a great general purpose rod. It will be great for just about anything except crankbaits but you could probably get away with it.
  5. A Shimano Calcutta 251 and a Fenwick Elite Tech rod. The reel was a closeout I got for $35 and the rod was about $50, also on sale.
  6. I use braid for heavy vegetation and thick coverage. Overall I am not a fan. I have better luck with FC but braid does have it's place. I always think if I can see so can the fish. With that said, I went fishing today and used braid on one of spinning reels. I caught 4 on braid and 0 on FC, go figure.
  7. I have trying out some 12lb Seagar Senshi and so far I love it. It cast well, no stretch and good knot strength. It is fluorescent above the water and invisible below. So far I like it better than the Yozuri Hybrid I have been using for years.
  8. Thats a good deal. I wish a had a few extra buck lying around. I would pick up another 51e.
  9. Agreed. I was just trying to find an example of a reel that comes from a great line of reels which was not all that it appeared to be. Hence not all new reels are what they appear to be. It's some time it helps to be informed of what you are buying despite the name. That is why I visit this forum.
  10. Old vs. New..... Check out what this guy has to say about this particular Abu Garcia Reel. He is very critical of it. I am not sure all of it is warranted but it is interesting to listen to.
  11. How about a simple but awesome staple from the guys at PMR (Pimp My Reel). This cost a few bucks.....
  12. Sound like 3 different reels to me.... Sort of.... 5.x:1 for cranks 6.x:1 for jerkbaits 7.x:1 for topwater
  13. I enjoy using the newer tackle that is available today (in the last 15 years or newer) because it increases the fun factor of fishing. I have to confess, I like getting new toys. One great thing about todays tackle is how competitive the market has become. The low end priced reels are getting closer to higher priced reels in quality and over all feel, which i think is great for every fisherman. The reels from most manufactures you can get at the $100 and below price point, have come a long way. I hope this upward trend continues.
  14. 6lb so far is the smallest I have used.
  15. Having arthritis, anti-inflamitories like ibuprofen work well for me but you should see a doctor. Each pain can be treated individually and differently. Diet and exercise are the best remedies. Strengthening joints with good core exercises will easy pain and inflammation. Oddly, deadlifts worked for me. They shock the nervous system but over do it and you can be in more pain. One other thing that worked was taking a bath in muscle healing salt from Burt Bees. Seems silly but it worked. Also, the hot/cold treatments that some NFL players use also worked but it sucks.
  16. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
  17. I have the older zillion and it is good workhorse reel. I have had one issue and that is the breaks are inconsistent. They work sometimes but not others with no real reason as to why. I never have this issue with any of the shimano reels I have. When I saw the new zillion was coming out, I too saw the trend of re-masking a reel with the same design and calling it something else. My thought on this is, almost every reel company does this now. This trend happens a lot of things>computers, cars, cell phones, etc. If you want to go over to shimano, it comes down to personal preference I guess. If I had to pick a reel to bring you over, it would be the Chronarch. I have nothing but good things to say about this line of reels. It casts well, smooth retrieve and tons of fish handling power.
  18. If I had to chose one, it would be the rod. It communicates what is going on more so than anything else. But in the end, it would be all of the above. They are all important.
  19. Stradic ci4+ or the plueger supreme. The shimano sustain would also be an awesome reel. It just depends on what you want to spend.
  20. For most reels I use 12 Mustad Thor that I picked up for $1 or just use up a of what might be left on a spool. Nothing to scientific but I usually go 50/50. If it is a reel with a shallow spool, I might do a 75% main line and 25% backing. I never use braid for backing.
  21. The most expensive I have lost was a megabass griffon that I ordered from a tackle store in Japan. The line snapped during a cast and I watched $30 just float away down the river.
  22. I found one at Dicks Sporting Goods for $80 last fall. I have yet to see any cheaper. It has been a great reel so far.
  23. Invisix is my favorite at that size.
  24. I have seen there prices change constantly. I shop for odd ball stuff on their site all the time. I have yet to see a consistent pattern. I guess if you see a good deal, you should jump on it.
  25. G Loomis BCR803 GLX with a Shimano Chronarch 51e G Loomis MBR844 IMX with a Daiwa Zillion Shimano Crucial Crankbait Rod with a Shimano Curado or a St. Croix Avid 6'8'' MH x-fast spinning with a Shimano stradic This could all change depending on what mood I'm in.
