  1. Ive got a G loomis 7' 1 medium heavy G2 worms and jig rod that is a straight up TANK... It took me a long time to find a great sight/flipping rod for a spinning reel...I primarily use bait casters for everything except drop shot and weightless baits but I LOVE throwing heavy flipping jigs into beds with a spinning reel, Leaving the bail open and working the line with the left hand, and rod in the right. Its the G. Loomis GL2 JIg and Worm Spin Rod 7'1" Hvy 854S JWR I think they do make one that is 6'8 as well..
  2. Ive got two energy BC's. Ive used the Smokes and agree that the energy is far better. I use them as backups, and loaners. Ive had them two years or so, seem to work pretty good. Really light but they feel cheap almost. For the cost they aren't a bad deal.
  3. Any Abu Garcia revo mgx users? I used to use floats on my rods, and even leashes, but Ive been in plastic boats for many years and never having lost anything I just got complacent...
  4. Maybe losing my spinning rig today had more effect on me than Id like to admit, Ive put this thread in the wrong forum. Sorry Mods.
  5. Today was a first...Lost a rod/reel from a yak....St.Croix/Quantum.....What an idiot...Been fishing out of tupperware boats for so many years I guess its time and I was due, but it doesnt take away the sting... So with that said... This is what I will be using it for. -Weightless or very light weight senko's, Flukes, Creature baits, keitech swimbaits. -It will be going on a G loomis finesse rod, medium heavy. 7ft. -I run straight braid usually 15-20 lb. Id like... -$250 range -Not a super large body. -Possible braid ready. -High gearing. So if you were me what would you buy? Thanks collective minds of Bass Resource!
  6. Im the same way... Ive caught fish on it, but no where near what I do with plastics, or lures... It just bores the living hell out of me sitting in a kayak, watching my fish finder while I basically ice fish...
  7. Im using the helix 7 DI as well....man that thing is awesome!
  8. I flip in heavy cover all the time for large bass. Sure sometimes you get your nose yanked in, but that doesnt mean you lose the fish! Never once have I fallen out of a boat either. Outside of harpooning whales 12 miles out to sea, Ive yet to find a bass fishing style that I can't achieve on a kayak.
  9. Im with Flyfisher. Ive been yak fishing since 06 and gone through a few different boats over the years ( native, Ocean kayak, old town ) but after purchasing my atak last spring, Im sold. I can haul whatever I want, I can stand easily, very comfortable seat, tracks great, customizable, the list goes on an on....Do some research and Im sure you will find that although expensive, its one heck of a boat!
  10. Just get out and enjoy yourself. All these things mentioned are excuses. I fish heavy populated water on occasion and always catch something. I just appreciate the silent time on the water even if I do get skunked a day. Thats one of the reasons I went from a bass boat to a Kayak ten years ago. I was getting flustered spending so much money on days that I wouldnt catch fish. Now if I do have a real slow day, I write it off to exercise with a paddle! In the end, we all love to catch fish, but its the act of fishing itself that keeps us out there, lines in the water. Enjoy your time throwing baits, the weather, the scenery, its a gift!
  11. Sadly when it comes to transducers and kayaks, you just have to purchase, then modify to make it work for you. At least that has been my issue for the last ten years until I went to an Atak.
  12. I put a home depot drain plug in one boat, and I use a hobie fish finder plug in another. The hobie kit is pretty much the best way that Ive found.
  13. Ten years. Lets just say Im in recovery.
  14. Believe it or not, Ive had the best luck with a good ole Whopper popper.. That and a like to fish frogs..
  15. Ive owned the Helix 5 sonar/gps since it first came out and Just last week I upgraded to a Helix 7 DI/gps.... Great finders, and well worth the money. My 5 had the snot beat out of it on a kayak and never missed a beat. The 7 just looks amazing and seems far larger than 7 inch.
  16. Ive got three young sons, so the older two fish with me more and more as they get older The oldest being 9. What I did to make it interesting when they first started was rig up a spinning rod with braid, with a water caster bobber, and then 2-3 ft of flouro leader and a little trout fly. The braid makes it so its hard to get knots, and the fly catches bluegill all day. It also teaches them to cast, reel in, and to WATCH the line/bait. My oldest wanted to switch to a wacky senco rig within a few days...
  17. Depends on what type of water you are fishing. Ive used a little ten foot boat on local ponds, but being 6 ft, 220 with a serious addiction to tackle, I prefer a larger boat. Even more so if you are fishing big lakes, or ocean... Welcome to the addiction!
  18. Thanks guys! I definitely married above my class! Got the helix 7 installed on my ATAK..Waiting for the goop to dry...Going to hopefully get out Sat... Thanks for the help gentlemen!
  19. When the bight gets tough my go to is always a weightless wacky rigged senko in watermelon....
  20. For my 45 years young birthday my wife got me a new Hummingbird Helix 7..... Anyone use a larger style fish finder on their yak? This thing looks way bigger than my Helix 5.. Gotta see if it plays movies while I fish... Just looks like it would get in the way..
  21. I use the red one in the spring, the black one at night, and the silver the rest of the time...One of the best top water baits out there!
  22. Jackson Skipper is great for my son! Fishing ready.
  23. I been fishing a lake that still has snow on its shores for the last two months. I stay dry but as posted above I wear the proper gear.
  24. Yes and no. In a normal day I wear jeans, and hiking shoes in my yaks for fishing, and remain dry. How one paddles, how loaded down the boat is with gear, and transitioning in and out of the kayak is where you might get a little water. The bottom the boat can be wet but its not standing water. The scuppers do let the water out. And the more you fish out of it the better you get at a routine, and understanding what it takes to keep the craft dry during normal fishing. Self bailing is truly that.
  25. If it rains, you get wet. SOT fishing yak will be self bailing. Canoe will not.
