  1. My God-son, Jay asked almost the same question this last April, His budget was about $300.00 for a combo that had to get him through this year, new baby. He went with a Tatula CT in 6.3 and the Dobyns Fury 705CB. He was both for about two hundred forty bucks plus sales tax. He's fished the stink out of this set up all year and loves it. What's crazy is I fish a pre HP Champion 705CB with an OG Zillion and the performance of each is not that far apart. Something to ponder.
  2. Naw, I don't need anything. I have enough stuff to last me the rest of my life. Thanks Catt.
  3. I too recently received a special recognition from my employer but it did not come with a bonus check. It was a " Certificate Of Merit." So i'm going to treat myself to a pack or Zoom Trick Worms. I don't care what they cost. As for you buddy, Steez has a nice sound.
  4. You're such a tease. I have a Lamiglas SR705R that's just gathering dust. Maybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee there's a trade in the future ????? That's called a reverse tease.
  5. Would you use a snap to connect to a jig, a Texas rigged lure ? I see two purposes for a snap. Quick lure change and a connection that allows a bait to obtain it's full action. A snap is not a direct connect and with that, inhibits the transmission of vibration and or lure contact. If snaps were truly beneficial on a spinnerbait, I would think the manufacturer would install it at the manufacture sight. I'm not questioning anyone who uses a snap in the OP's context. I'm just asking where the real benefit is ? If it works for someone, awesome. It's not for me. I'm convinced A well tied knot that is checked and periodically retied is a better practice.
  6. Wow. Did I saw Wow? For all intent and purposes, Wow. That's special, and to be caught on a black Jitterbug in 60 feet of water.....it's even more impressive. Happy Thanksgiving !!
  7. The HP is a totally different blank than the previous DX Extreme. There was " power" added to the upper middle third of the blank. I was advised of this when I made my decision to get the 743C HP. I could feel it right off the bat. My previous Gen DX 702 SP is a drop shot rod if that helps provide what the power rating is like. My 743 HP has been my Senko rod from day one. I use #12 floro on a reel with an SV spool and have had great success. I think Iabass8 is right on. If you think you will ever need to pressure a larger fish away from any cover, look at the 3 power. Call Dobyns direct. I've actually called for input and Richard or Gary took the phone. That's not a bad resource to have when you have a question. Good Luck!
  8. Ima Flit, Rapala X-Rap and LC Pointer 90 and 100's is about all I use anymore. 684CB and 704CB work these baits the way I want. Personal preference. I would see a 705CB for 110 and larger baits. A Stayzee 90 would be a chore with a 4 power though.
  9. Be careful Bill. You don't need to be an out take from the movie, The Revenant.
  10. That was a gutsy effort no matter how short lived.
  11. SunlineSuper Sniper FC in #16. Manageable, lower stretch and visibility, good abrasion qualities, addition sensitivity, performance history is very good.
  12. Yes. I think I understand what your looking for. There are times you just want to cover water in featureless banks that are somewhat flat and fairly shallow, maybe mud or clay. I fish tidal effected sloughs that have sections like that which run a hundred yards or more at a time but they hold fish. Try some of the thin sided billed baits. Varying your retrieve will make a huge difference. Experiment with your retrieve. A buoyant bait may be helpful because they rise in a brief pause and that can generate a reaction bite. I'm confident you already know that. A bait I like and will use as an example is the Luhr Jensen Speed Trap. It has a very tight wiggle, much like a lipless but it's a floater with a short bill. It's pretty effective in that scenario. There are countless baits that have similar characteristics. Look at the Normans Thin N, 6th Sense Crush 75 and so on. Standard squarebills can be just as effective. Hope that helps.
  13. I am Dwight. Cleveland is rocking. The Dodgers v. Cubs game just started. Time for a hot dog and a DR. Pepper. Doug
  14. The double tail Hula Grub is an absolute staple for smallmouth in my region. It's a great largemouth bait as well. The color 176 with the ends of claws, as they are, died blue is money.
  15. I had a couple of Cara series rods a while back and they were good rods.
  16. I worked 18 years of retail management and upper management before a significant career change, this after a leverage buyout. The folks most expendable are in the corporate offices and not at the sales floor level. The closer you are to the CEO, the greater the probability you will be expendable. A company like these can go a year or two without the actual CEO. He/she isn't unlocking the doors stocking shelves and standing at the register. Loose a quality floor person and neglect a shopper? That hurts immediately and that won't last long. There will be some "restructuring" going on. That's a given. Getting sacked is no fun. Been there done that. I feel bad for those at risk of having a stranger ask them for their keys to the office.
  17. 80's and 90's is vintage ? Holy crap, I feel old. I have scars that are vintage.
  18. The 703 Fury may be under powered for a worm/jig rod. I would suggest you consider the 704 or even better, the 734. Look at the specs for each model and that should explain why I would move up a power. The 734 in all Dobyns' series are very versatile. You've picked an extremely competitive group of rods, that's for sure.
  19. I'll try to get to the point of your question. The Heavy EF would be your choice based on the lure weights, the cover types and the fact it's one of two options you mentioned. Very few anglers actually flip anymore. The reels are so good and the pitching technique is so efficient, utilizing a single haul flip isn't commonly used anymore. A 7'5" rod will be fine.
  20. Never. Well almost never. When the water is "muddy" or roiled and shallow, this pattern seems to get bit.
  21. I have a little different perspective I guess. Both companies are strongly branded and have a pretty loyal customer base. I doubt either entity, regardless of ownership group will drop it's name. It's kind of like Shimano acquiring G. Loomis and then calling the rods all Shimano. The branding was more valuable than the production facility/employee base. The owner group will increase their purchasing power, garnering discount leverage, much like Walmart has developed. I would guess some of the exclusive label merchandise will be consolidated. The corporate level positions will be reduced and much of the overhead also consolidated. I honestly don't think any savings will trickle down to the floor level consumer. Reduced operating costs will slide to the profit line. I have never bought one item from a BPS store and other than some Guide Wear rain gear, I haven't spent much at a Cabelas. The on line options are too appealing. Besides, I have so much crap as it stands now, I can't justify buying any more. I remember my first BPS catalog. I think it was about 28 pages and it was wore out from looking at it. Is the recession over ?
  22. There's a lesson to be learned. When the bass aren't cooperating, you need to keep two things open, your mind and your tackle bag. Good for you.
  23. You have the right to remain silent: You might as well because what you're about to say is most likely a lie anyway. Anything you say will be used against you in a court of law: Right. There will be a motion to suppress and you just have to tell the judge you were confused and everything you said will be ruled inadmissible anyway. You have the right to have an attorney present before and during questioning if you wish: It's three in the morning, you can't remember the name of "your lawyer" and arraignment won't be until Monday at ten AM. If you can't afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you AT NO COST to represent you: There goes that arraignment thing again. Your a "commercial painter " living in a new home, driving a brand new lifted four wheel drive pulling two jet skis and " I can't afford a lawyer ", so you get one free. Wait the tax payers paid for them. If you decide to make statements or answer questions you can stop at any time: Right. Just apply selective honesty and ask questions instead of reply to questions. If you do answer a question, finish it with, " I swear on my baby momma." When your done with the investigation, ask yourself why you just didn't become a plumber to begin with. At least you can assure what way the BS runs in the drain. Sorry Hootie.
  24. Big Bite, outside of someone selling in bulk, is a reasonable as you'll find.
  25. That much linear separation is odd. I've seen it when blanks were crushed or compressed. I'm not implying that's the case, it's just an observation. It will be interesting to see how the manufacture responds. I hope it works out for you.
