  1. this was my thought too
  2. I do braid to a floro leader and line twist isn't an issue
  3. if you want a stiffer more abrasion resistant leader, but feel like you are getting ripped off paying $8 for 27 yards just get the next size dimater up from what you had planned. If you were going to get 6lb leader specific floro, get a 8lb spool of mainline floro.
  4. Next time you are out tie on a leader. If you start catching fish cut off the leader and use straight braid. What happens next will help answer your question
  5. I read his post, but wanted to make sure I knew more about his problem before giving advice. His post reads like he might be new to fishing and I wanted to make sure I knew when his line is breaking. Someone new to fishing might say their line breaks while casting even though it breaks when they get a birds nest and the line kinks itself then on the next cast it breaks at that link. Someone new to fishing might also be using an overhand knot and it is coming undone when they try to cast. line shouldn't just break while the lure is in the air, even if it has been damaged in the sun. Something is wrong with the knot, rod or reel.
  6. is your line breaking when you cast, when you set the hook or when you have a fish on? 14lb mono is strong enough line for bass fishing. If you tie some knots wrong your line will break well below test strength. Also lick your line when pulling the knot tight to lubricate and cool the line. Are you using a spinning or bait casting setup?
  7. This is exactly what I do. I use to use the clinch knot but the trilene takes only a few seconds longer and is stronger than the clinch knot.
  8. Thanks for all of the advice guys, it has been informative. I think I'll end up trying out the drift sock and a hand paddle. The past few times I went fishing I went to a higher elevation lake that is surrounded by pine trees which really cut down on the wind.
  9. I have a humminbird piranha max 197c di for my kayak and really like it. I have been using it for about two months and was planning on writing a detailed review after a few more months of use. This past weekend while dropshoting using my fish finder I watched a fish dive down after my bait as I was dropping it the the bottom. I closed the bail half way down and had a fish on. I have heard people say drops shotting with a fish finder is like playing a video game and always thought they were just old guys trying to act young, but they are right. It only draws about 200 milliamps so you can run it for multiple days on small 12v battery. It took me a few days of catching fish using it to realize what is a fish and what isn't. Fish two pounds and up show as nice arches, anything smaller will show up as a few dots. It has enough power that you can see your bait fall while dropshotting down to about 40 feet, if you drop down right under the transducer. The display is easy to see in the sun with or without polarized glasses. It is also easy enough to operate that I didn't need to look at the manual to figure it out. The display is small and light so you can easily make a mount for your kayak. I turned the fishing rod holder that came with my kayak into a removable mount for the display. My transducer is mounted to shoot through my kayak hull. I don't really use the down imaging function because I can normally figure out what is on the bottom using the normal sonar function. I almost always use the 200hz beam with the sensitive set to the max, chart speed at 4 and the filter on to clean up some of the clutter. I would recommend getting the model without down imaging because I never use that function and the non di model is a deal at $100. With the non di model you can get the fish finder, a battery and everything you need to mount it for under $150. I considered the lowarance elite 3x, but have heard that humminbird tends to be more user friendly
  10. drop shot with the bait positioned high enough to get out of the grass. You can texas rig your plastic with a worm hook so it is weedless
  11. Drag it, hop it, shake it, swim it, you can do pretty much anything you want with it. I tend to do a drag with a hop or two and give it a shake when I feel it bump into something. I like a floating or neutrally botany worm like zoom trick worms or Biospawn plasma tail.
  12. "Here's one" If I'm alone I just say it in my head.
  13. Something cheap and thick like 20lb trilene big game. You will probably have to re spool it once or twice so go cheap and a larger diamiter line doesn't birds nest as badly
  14. I normally carry a kahr cw9 in a remora micro holster (the one with the clip) I like a smaller holster during the summer. If the clothes I'm wearing print easily I switch to a Kahr cw380. You don't really need a thick gun belt to carry a subcompact like the shield. I use a hanks amish belt and it works fine for the kahr. If you carry with the extended magazine I would switch to the flush fitting one so it conceals better with a thin shirt
  15. Commiefornia has the same rules
  16. I'm more frustrated with constantly getting blown off spots while drop shotting than trying to keep my kayak pointed in one direction. Will a hand paddle help hold me in one spot longer or allow me to slow my drift enough so I cannfish an area?
  17. The wind is a nightmare when I'm in my kayak. Lately I've only been fishing until 10 because after that the wind just pushes me around. I fish in water between 20 and 50 feet deep so a stake out pole isn't really and option. Besides only fishing coves that are shielded from the wind, what do you guys do when fishing in the wind? I was thinking about trying out a drift sock, but wasn't sure how well it would work.
  18. A cow that got stuck in the mud and died
  19. You can't post a thread like this and not give an explanation.
  20. http://www.ebay.com/itm/201182152447?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I got one and its just as accurate as my berkley scale. It also takes aaa batteries which makes replacing batteries cheap if they ever die.
  21. I just got a new rod today and decided to go to my friend's house after work to do some fishing. I was on his boat with my friend, his dad and one of his dad's friends we fish with. I made a cast into some weeds and hooked up a fish. My drag wasn't set that tight but I had already gotten the fish out of the weeds and into open water so I wasn't worried about it. After fighting the fish for a bit it made a dive towards the bottom and get tangled up in something. I realized it is wrapped around something solid because I couldn't pull it out. The fish only felt like it was about four pounds, but I have a friendly bet going with my friend's dad and the other guy we fish without about who can catch the biggest fish by the end of summer and there was a good chance this fish would put me back in the lead. The current leader of four pounds will be broken soon and I knew if mine was bigger it wasn't by much , but I wanted to shut my friend's dad up who has been reminding me he is in the lead every time we go fishing. I tried to untangle the fish, but nothing was working. My friend's dad said that he would never let a fish get away and went in after a trout in 45 degree water that had gotten tangled in a tree. I would never hear the end of it if his four pound fish ended up winning our bet so I decided to go in after the fish. I stripped down to my boxers, checked the depth finder which read five feet and dove in to get the fish. It was actualy about eight feet deep and the fish had gotten my line tangled in small branch. I could feel the fish, but couldn't get a good grip on it so I decided to just swim up with the fish and branch it was tangled in. I grabbed the branch and started to swim towards the surface when I heard a pop. I surfaced with a broken line and no fish. The fish wasn't big enough to be my personal best, but I had put more effort into catching it than I had any fish before and it stood a good chance of placing me in the lead of our friendly wager.
  22. I hate those masks, I would rather just cut a hole in my buff or pull it down a bit
  23. I like black chrome because they look the coolest to me, though I still buy the cheapest. If hook color is a factor it is one of the less important factor in fishing
  24. I don't think bug spray really does much to adversely affect the fish bite. I make sure not to directly spray it on any lures, but that's about it. I swell up really bad from bug bites so if the bugs are out I have bug spray on.
  25. One thing I'm glad I added is a fish gripper attached to about five feet of rope. This way once I catch a fish I can put it back in the water while I get out my scale or phone for a picture. I can also clip it to small tree branches so that I'm not always getting pushed around in the wind.
