This is something I have never experienced? Usually the only problems are with gasoline smell or fishingskirts,com squeezing them so much in the package they don't want to seperate. Allen

Most of what I use are Gamakatsu for nickel and VMC for black with others occasionally in the mix. You need to figure out how long of a shank you want as it will determine what is available. To me the two best things to spend money for quality are the hook and swivel. Allen

Do you have a set of calipers that you can check the wire diameter on both baits? The brown frames do cost more but only like $0.03 which I guess could add up. Allen

Can you post pics of the two baits? I want to see the difference in them that you are talking about. As for the wire color the brownish color wire is called super stainless (not sure why because of the color?) its stronger than normal wire at a given diameter. Terminator calls it like 770 wire or something like that? I use it in my baits a lot. Allen

I think any red plastic tube would work? Or you can just use heat shrink. Allen

Gray in the sunlight and amber for low light conditions. Spend more money on the gray then just buy a cheap pair of amber ones. Allen
