That surge near the boat is exactly why I use backreel. Why use something “set” like a drag when the fish pulls at different levels of strength/speed throughout the fight? I prefer to be just as dynamic as the fish too many times in the past during a deep dive next to the boat I was trying to bend down, give the fish line, loosen the drag……… and they pulled loose. When you can reel backwards, you don’t even have to move your feet to play the fish out. No dancing all over the boat pulling out line with your off hand

I’ve been buying junk from China my whole life, it’s fairly unavoidable and they do make some decent stuff for cheap.

But mono is cheap so it can’t be good…….

It’s been well proven many times over that rod and reel fishing doesn’t have a negative impact on fish populations . Trust me I’ve had to read hundreds of extremely boring studies on it, most show wise harvest improves population dynamics now throw in nets and you might have a case, although the only lake in my area that allows commercial nets in chickamauga and it has the biggest bass

It’s just whatever satisfies people’s human emotions, learned that a long time ago with trapping the females have been known to eat their babies
