I struggle with the dropshot.
like tom said you gotta put it right on them.its not a bait your gonna cover alot of ground with its for when you have fish located and they get tight lipped.and dont over work it. fish iy alomost like live bait, drop it on them and dont move it much. if you take your index finger and tap the rod 4 or 5 times thats all the action you usually need.

Anyone else stumped?
water temp went down 4 degrees found a bay today where the bass had the shad stacked up got 13 on lipless baits. more like a usual fall bite.

Anyone else stumped?
I live in south central pa but I fish mostly lakes in Maryland. its been weird.september bites were almost nonexistent. October has started the same way. you can see tons of baitfish and predator fish on the finder but getting anything to bite is tough. big cold front today though should knock the water temp down some. might be a little tough this weekend but some warmer temps and clouds early next week. im off Monday and Tuesday and im thinking thir gonna be eating. I think that's part of the problem. water temp has been stuck between 67-71 for about 3 weeks fish are there with no reason to move with tons of baitfish around. no real reason to eat a lure.

The Ned Rig
t id be interested in buying some of those heads in 1/16 and 3/32 if your friend wants to sell them. the zman heads are ok with me buy I recently got some of their new og heads and I really like them.
-
The Ned Rig
no thats largely marketing by zman and some others. the reason ned likes the elaztech material is for its bouyancy not the stand up action. when you slowly swim those baits on the light head it gluides and hovers better than other materials.the mushroom head plays into the swimming action also as it displaces water differently than a round head. remember the original guy ( icant remember is name) started using half of a strike king stick bait. he was stressing the frugal way of fishing . saying you dont need to buy $100 swmbaits and $400 rods to catch fish.you dont have to use the trd 3inch grubs and swimbaits have their days too.as far as the retrieve i used to fish them kind of like a shakey head too,and they caught fish. then one day i started fishing them the way ned instructed and i started to really see what they could do when the bite was tough.

fall fishing in no shad lakes
so 2 of the main lakes I fish have shad and two don't. we all know that shad like to migrate to the middle and backs of creeks in fall. the bass of course will follow and sometimes pen the up and have a blast. fishing those types of locations and following the shad works for me on those lakes.but what about the lakes with no shad. im assuming the main forage in these two are general bait fish , bluegill crayfish etc. both of these fish have large populations of white perch which I guess could also be forage. so whats your fall strategy on lakes with no shad? also these 2 are highland type reservoirs a fair amount of step drops and deep water bbut both do contain some aquatic grass. (milfoil)

Kvd magic color...
I meant caffeine shad.its a good minnow ,baitfish , panfish imitator. for a pure shad imitator id go with the smokey shad.

"False Fall" and the Fall transition
same here. fished Saturday.tons of baitfish on the finder. put swimbaits dropshots crankbaits etc down there. nothing finally caught some by fishing up higher on the grass using swimbaits lipless and topwater. my suspicion is that while there were plenty of bass around the bait fish on the deep weed edge they were just inactive. the fish I caught up shallower were simply the ones who decided to hunt and eat.

"False Fall" and the Fall transition
you got me on that one. I wish I could tell you but I don't know. that's for sure.for me at least just because you caught them somewhere yesterday doesn't mean youll catch them there today. they just seem to follow the bait. that's why I like to keep moving until I catch some fish or see large concentrations of baitfish. ofcourse that's just my opinion what do I know , im working for a living not fishing foe one.

"False Fall" and the Fall transition
bait. like ajay and some others have said. for our lakes it seems fish are very scattered.some guys are catching them on topwater ,others catching them around 20 feet. to me I feel like I need to fish quickly cover water until I either catch fish or see large schools of bait. if I see the bait and cant get bit on moving baits ill slow down and drop shot or finesse worm. now Saturday is supposed to be cloudy with spitting rain im looking forward to that.

Using Scent?
yes this is something that some fisherman don't understand especially new fisherman. you can use the best scent in the world, put it on the best lure in the world and if your not fishing where the fish are your not going to get bit.you see the same problem with deer hunting. guy buys buck lure puts it out ( or worse yet put it on himself) and expects every deer for two miles to come running. when he doesn't kill anything the scent doesn't work.what he doesn't realize is he wasn't hunting where the deer travel. fish attractant to me is the same its an aid that may help you get a few more bites but you gotta master the other parts of the puzzle first.

Fishing a Fluke - What Am I Doing Wrong?
just my 2cents but heres some thoughts. I love fishing fluke style baits catch a ton on them. try a yamamoto dshad instead of or in addition to the fluke. they are more salt filled and don't want to jump on top as much. rig them on an owner cps 3/0 or 4/0 hook. the little spring on the front of the hook keeps the bait from sliding down and also lets you get a couple extra fish on the same bait. zoom flikes are cheap but dshad are NOT.dont add weight it kills the action. I like to work it similar to a jerk bait, cast let it sink to near bottom give 2or 3 erratic twitches the let it fall on a slack line.watch your line as it falls and when you go to jerk it again feel for weight if it feels heavier than it did slam him.i like a spinning rod with flouro or braid to flouro leader.to me the spinning rod helps me stay in contact with the lighter bait. I remember when the sluggo first came out.man that thing was a blast fish never saw such a thing you could throw it in some clear shallow water and watch 3 or four fish come look at it. twitch it and they would race to grab it. I told my buddy one time its like the fish don't want to eat it they just cant help themselves

Reaction Innovations
i use both although i use the 4.5 the most. the o ring is a little big for the narrow spotin the middle but its noat a big deal and the smallmouth devour the dirty sanchez color

Reaction Innovations
skinny dipper and little dipper are good baits. pocket rocket is a really good wacky rigged bait.

I gotta learn
turn the gain or sensitivity up high, get out over some deep water 40 or 50 feet. doesnt matter wether there are fish there or not your looking for that thermocline. that band of fuzziness on your depth finder. once you know that you can look for that life zone shallower like tom said.good thing is if the thermocline is say 18 to 20 feet you dont have to worry about fishing deeper than that. also if there is submerged grass there are almost alwas some fish on the deep grass edge of shallow points or bars etc.

partner too impatient for me to dropshot !
I do the same this time of year. cast , nota long cast but not vertical. let the bait sit 30 seconds or so move it a foot or two let it sit again. I'm mostly fishing weedlines in about 15 feet or so. now if I get on a rock pile or brush pile in 20 feet or so I will go to more of a vertical presentation.

Fishing plastics, why the long pause

Wacky rig and hookup percentage
along the same lines the gamakatsu wicked wacky its a khale style hook with 2 little fiber weedgaurds . comes through cover pretty good and almost never misses . you can set hard or just reel and slightly sweep . doesn't matter hook uo ratio is extremely high.

wacky rigs
weightless in lakes. I do use a 1/16 0z weighted wacky head for rivers just to help get it down a little in current
