The good writing/good fishing relationship
It seems these days writing is becoming a lost art, AI stuff ruining creativity. Being old, remembering the only way of getting information was the written word.Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Field and Stream and Fur Fish and Game. Growing up a big thing was TV, the Flying Fisherman with Gadabout Gaddis, then American Sportsman with Curt Gowdy. Then came Fishing Facts which for me was a revelation of the how and why of fishing introducing me to Buck Perry. Charlie Brewer and his light tackle do nothing approach resonated with me. In-Fisherman followed with a scientific approach to fishing. Saltwater Sportsman with Frank Woolner and Hal Lyman were another when I got the salt bug. Many contributors here have been mentioned and writers in magazines too, I'll add Rich Zaleski to the mix.

I'm interested in the re-tooled Daiwa BG, I have one that I use saltwater fishing and it's a work horse. The new ones are lighter, though more expensive. Good friend of mine has a Flux Jet on order, he's not sure when delivery will be. Interested in checking it out and getting feedback from him.

Spinning Gear For Bass
I'm 100% spinning reel in freshwater, though not a "power" fisherman. You want to watch power fishing with spinning reels check out tuna popping videos on you tube, they catch some amazing fish with these.

Got back yesterday from a 4 night trip up to the Catskills. This is more of a trip to meet up with friends to hang out and eat a lot and have some adult beverages with some fishing. We hit a small lake on Friday with 2 friends and my son, it was mostly really small largemouth close to shore, I did get some better fish off shore but as has been my luck lost a couple on the jump but did manage one that was better than what we'd be catching. Saturday was a 5 hr drift down the Delaware, we had 15 people on this where most of them just drifting down in kayaks and not fishing. The couple that did fish had a few fish but was really slow. I caught a small Walleye and a small Smallmouth. Afterwards back at camp we had a pot luck dinner with everyone and had a great time with many laughs and some great food. Sunday everyone left except me an my son, we hit another small lake and I managed to land 6 decent Largemouths and lost a couple on the jump after I switched to a 5" weightless fluke. Got home on Monday and was greeted by a downed tree in the backyard.

Attention campers: seeking tent recommendations
The Eureka Timberline was an iconic tent, as Randy said it was the standard tent in the Boy Scouts. Unfortunately Eureka no longer exists, discontinued by Johnson Outdoors. My previous 2 tents were Eureka Apex tents which were great. My current tent is a REI Basecamp 4, which I'm now on my 4th year with it. I have over 150 nights spent in it, it's been through numerous rain storms, high winds and all the usual stuff you run into camping. I've had no issues with it. When looking for a replacement I specificity wanted a full fly and to be able to close all the screens as I camp in temps down into the 20's. What its not is cheap, not an instant tent, it's not a light weight. It takes me over 20 minutes to set it up, but I'm 73 years old so I tend to take my time. I waited until they were having a 20% off sale, went into the store and the guy in the camping department told me wait another 2 weeks and they would have a 30% off sale ! I'm figuring this could be my last tent, I'm extremely happy with it. It's just me in the tent, they do make a Base Camp 6, which might be OK for 2 people.

Planning my first boat trip with a friend.
Lot's of great advice here. One thing nobody mention is to bring bananas, don't tell the captain you have em. Hide one inside the boat or his cooler, they always appreciate that 😛

Had a great week of camping and fishing up in the Adirondacks. We arrived and set up camp, had something to eat and a few adult beverages. 1st day we fished one of the lakes where we fished last year and had some of the best freshwater fishing we ever had, big fish and a lot of them. Well this year the numbers were good but mostly small fish, we did have a few good ones, all smallmouths. My buddy and I both had over 25 fish that day and lost just as many. Next day we tried a different lake we’ve never fished, this lake was a no motor lake, not even electric. I went one way and my buddy the other, I did really well on numbers and they were all good sized largemouths. My buddy absolutely blistered them in numbers and size. Saturday we fishing a river, we launched and went upstream for about 3 hrs and drifted back to the launch fishing along the way. The fishing was slow, I got a nice smallmouth then not too much lost a few along the way. My friend was ahead and saw some fish wakes where a creek came into the river. This was the spot, we each hooked up with a couple of good smallies, a largemouth and my friend got a nice Pike. A lot of action in just a small part of the river. It was getting late and we had to get moving to get back to the launch. We also got into black flies, my buddy knew to put on the bug juice, me no, not a good decision. The next day was a rain and wind day so we went exploring and wound up in Lake Placid where we went to the Olympic Center and museum which was really cool. Then we had to find a drug store as I had a bad reaction to the black fly bites. My hands and fingers blew up like a balloon. Not to be deterred we went to the River Trail Brew House where we had a couple of great beers and an equally great lunch. Next day weather wasn’t that great so it was another day of rest. So our last day to fish, weather looked great with a 10% chance of rain. We went back to the no motor lake and this time we both headed to where my friend was the previous day. It took a little while to really get on them, but when we did it was a fish on just about every cast, and they were all pretty much good fish, again it was all largemouths which surprised us as the water looked like classic smallmouth water with rock all over from boulders to gravel. We lost count of the number as we would get one and release it as fast as possible and cast again and get another one. We had a little rain shower but not much. We then heard thunder and dark clouds in the distance but the radar showed it had missed us. A little while later the wind got cold and dark clouds were coming in. We both said we better get back to the launch. We were about a 1 ½ to 2 miles from the launch. My friend headed right to the opposite shore and I headed right toward the launch. Well before we knew it the wind picked up and it started raining, and it soon was a torrential rain, the water was boiling. We were in the middle of the lake, thunder cracking, soaked and cold, then to top it off it was now hailing. It was the wildest weather we’ve been in on the kayaks. Pelted by hard rain, wind and hail we both made it to a shore line and waited it out. We finally made it back to the launch. We walked up to get our wheels and bring the kayaks back. We get back and changing clothes when to top it off we got into the biggest mosquito swarm I’ve ever saw. They were all over us. We finally were able to load up the kayaks, get in our vehicles and put the heat on. We agreed we weren’t scared, but we were concerned. Back at camp we did say it was a great day of fishing. Father in law was on the Normandy invasion. Never talked about it, until a neighbor told him to watch Saving Private Ryan. This was not a good thing as it brought back suppressed memories of it, I'd never seen him cry until then. My father was a plank holder on the Missouri and was there for the Japanese signing. Family legend was that he played the drum roll before it, he was in the band on board and was a drummer and also sang too in the band. We have of picture of him singing in front of the band on the fantail. He never talked about his time there too.- Island Campin’ and Smallmouth Bassin’
Funny you said that, I've been lucky in the past with the black fly's. I was just looking on line for black fly head nets😃 Is their one that you recommend ?- Island Campin’ and Smallmouth Bassin’
Great trip!!! I love it up there. I'll be heading up there next week for a week of camping and kayak fishing.- Riding a Dinosaur
Oh yeah, I have fun every time I'm out. Been kayak fishing for over 20 yrs and I'm still paddling. Just have 2D fish finder with a 5" screen, though I do have gps and mapping. I've been in an Eddyline 14'Caribbean for 11 years now, it's a nice paddling yak. I manage to put a few in the boat.- Riding a Dinosaur
Jeez, if you guys are in dinosaurs, I'm in the primordial ooze- Reservoir Trip, Plumbing Fun
Was able to get in a trip to one of my local reservoirs, it was a grind for me. 7 hrs on the water and got 7 largemouths, 2 smallmouths, 2 perch and a crappie. Only picture I was going to take was one of the smallies that was a good one, lipped it and dropped it as it shook. After an hr drive back home due to traffic just looking forward to unpacking and having dinner. Come in and wife announces kitchen sink is backed up. Oh well, got to fix it now as the next day I'm babysitting my 3 yr old grandaughter. Go in the basement and open up the clean out, nothing coming out of it, so it's backed up somewhere between the sink and clean out. Empty out the cabinet beneath the sink, disassemble all the plumbing and start with the manual snake. It's happened before but I was able to use the clean out in the basement, it's messy and takes time but at least I"m standing upright. Now I'm laying on my back, head in the cabinet. I'm making about 3" progress turning the snake with a small vise grip attached to it, then take it off and do another 3" , repeat this about 100 times. Good thing I did this before my granddaughter was here, because she'd be telling her mom all the new words and phrases she just leaned from pop-pop. After at least a hr of this got everything back together and thankfully the drain was cleared and nothing was leaking. Then I got to take a shower using Dawn to get all the funk off of me. I told my wife I just saved us a 1,000 $, I should get a new fishing rod, she asked do you really need another, I just laughed. - Not To Be Forgotton
