  1. Daiwa Rebellion 6'10 MH-R, it's a moderate fast with good backbone. Rated 1/4-1oz. Haven't fished it yet, but from testing casting it should be good. Hard to find quality 2 piece rods around my area.
  2. Long story short, I have grown to prefer casting over spinning. The overall control and accuracy are much better for me. While I am no expert, I have learned quite a bit over the last few years. The one area I need serious help is skipping light plastics (weightless trick worms, wacky senkos, and weedless 1/16oz Ned rigs). These are highly productive for me and this year I am determined to use casting gear to skip under trees. My set up is a 6'10" M-F casting rod, rated 1/8-5/8oz and 8-14lb line. It has a light tip and the rods loads deep. Have it paired with a SLX MGL 71 HG spooled with 6lb Yo Zuri Hybrid. I can pitch and cast pretty decently, not quite as far as my spinning set up, but close enough. I can skip with spinning, but not well with casting. I have the brakes set to 3 on 1 off, dial at 4. Spool tension set to allow a fairly fast fall rate. I thumb the spool the whole cast and raise the rod tip up towards the end of the cast. 80% of the time I still get over runs and backlashes. I am trying not to snap cast, rather load the rod and swing in a smooth forcefull manner. What am I missing? How does one skip light plastics weighing a total of 1/8-3/16oz? Any tips would be highly appreciated. Thanks
  3. Big fan of the war eagle finesse 5/16oz. While not Colorado blade they have what they call a turtle back blade. Works well in dirty water.
  4. Fellow Canadian that feels your pain let us know how you like the new reel. Debating between the Metanium and Bantam 2022 myself. Did you get hit with taxes upon arrival?
  5. You might be ok with braid for better hook sets.
  6. Size 1 or 2 EWG hooks, which are hard to find locally, and a pegged 1/16oz bullet weight is my confidence finesse rig. Skipped under trees or docks has been very productive for me and it has caught me a few 5lb bass, so it's not just a small fish bait.
  7. Ontario zone 16 bass season opens 4th Saturday of June, pike mid may as well I believe
  8. I fish a stained to muddy large pond quite often. Very little luck with a chatterbait and curly tail grub. A 5/16oz spinnerbaits without a trailer has been very productive though. White and chartreuse or fire tiger.
  9. It's funny to me how we, as obsessive anglers, manage to over complicate the simplest, easiest, and cheapest techniques such as Ned rigging. The whole idea was cheap tackle, cheap jig heads, and a simple sub 3" piece of plastic. Saw an interview with Ned explaining the technique and tackle. I believe he was using an old modified spinning reel and a $20 rod with 10lb line (forget what type). I am just as guilty of overcomplicating it too. But at the end of the day it is a simple way of fishing and it works amazing well.
  10. I am playing with the idea of using baitcasting for finesse fishing I would normally use a spinning combo for. I have a SLX MGL 70 spooled with 6lb yo Zuri hybrid on a 6'10" M-F rod with a very light tip, almost moderate fast. Another month before I can get out on the water, but looking forward to trying it out. Not BFS weights, more like Ned rigs, weightless trickworms, drop shot, etc.
  11. The Carbonlite 2.0 rods are very good in my opinion. They are light, sensitive, comfortable, and durable. I have the 6'8" M-XF spinning and a 6'6" M-F casting rod in the line and they have treated me well. No experience with the reels.
  12. I don't think there is a wrong choice. Both companies make very good reels. I gravitate towards Shimano personally. I have both the SLX MGL 70 (150 frame size, with 70 spool size) and the Curado MGL 70. The Curado MGL 70 just melts in my hand. The SLX is also a small frame reel, and I would imagine the Curado 150 MGL would be similar. Not a huge difference but still noticeable. Line capacity has not been an issue for me, but that was with 10lb big game (14lb ish line diameter and breaking strength). Bigger line may or may not require more capacity depending on your style. This year I have the SLX MGL loaded up with 6lb yo Zuri hybrid (10lb ish line diameter and breaking strength) And the Curado MGL loaded up with 10lb yo Zuri hybrid (14lb ish diameter and strength). I do prefer is the brake dial on the side of the reel as opposed to the bottom. The Curado 150 MGL also has the side plate attached if that matters to you. The Curado MGL 150 also offers three gear ratios. But that was well covered already. I will mention my 70's measure 28" ipt full and 18" empty. So if you cast half the spool worth of line, your at 23" ish.
  13. I saw the Shimano SLX XT DC in 70 size with an MGL spool and I was like buy now!!! Then found out it was delayed until late November, no pre orders
  14. Just bought the 6'10" MH-R 2 piece casting, paired with a Curado MGL 70. Too early to go fishing in my parts so no real review per say. But it's very light weight. Interesting blank, it feels a little stiffer/faster action than the regular action (moderate fast) would suggest. However, when I tested the rod under load it is a moderate fast action (Regular action in Daiwa terms I guess) with a good bit of power in the butt section. Cast and pitched with a 1/4 and 1/2oz casting plug just to play with it and seemed to handle it well. Sensitive enough to feel the plug dragged across a smooth floor. So it should be decent on the water, time will tell. Nice shorter handle, the Eva foam while not my favourite material is nicely done and offers a good grip. The reel seat is comfortable from various hand positions. The locking nut isn't sharp and lines up nicely where you finger would rest of palming the reel. The color is orange, not gold. Looks like a very nice rod with nice details. Picked up for a decent price here in Canada.
  15. I fished a SLX 71 MGL pretty hard last year and it is very smooth and comfortable. Fished with 10lb big game using weightless - 1/4oz Texas rigs, 1/8oz Ned rigs, 3/8oz spinnerbaits, light jigs, etc. Never missed a beat and feels strong on the retrieve. Added a Curado 71 MGL because I wanted something just a tad smaller for a new rod. Haven't fished it yet, but she is a bit smaller and slightly more beefier gearing wise. I really like the reel size, never ran out of line or even close. Big game 10lb is really 14lb line diameter with 14lb breaking strength from various tests I have seen. The Curado 150 MGL looks pretty sweet if your using heavier line or want more line capacity. Slightly higher drag rating I believe as well.
  16. I have had cheap two piece rods come apart during the cast. Went to one piece rods for a long while. Now I am gravitating to two piece higher quality rods out of convince. Had one too many times where bringing a one piece rod wasn't an option and missed fishing opportunities. I find that if you twist the blanks while inserting it seems to help the rod stay together during a cast. Haven't had an issue recently.
  17. Just got back from the store, played with the 6'10" MH-R 2 piece. Rod is light, nice tip, decent price. Cons for me at least was the color accents, foam grips not my favourite but not a deal breaker either. Still debating...hoping to here more reviews here.
  18. I just enjoy fishing. Any species if fine by me.
  19. For comfort and control Wynn grips Cork Foam In that order. But if the rod fits what I am looking for power and action wise, I can be swayed as long as it's comfortable.
  20. Maybe Digi hyper super plus nothing against Daiwa, they make good reels, but their advertising is a little much.
  21. I am a kayak and bank angler for the most part. Used to carry a tackle box, Plano 3600 bag, then a backpack. Finally learned that simplicity is key. Now I carry a Plano 3500 bag with one double sided 3500 box. One side plastics, the other hard baits. Just enough variety without overly complicating things. Even that is really too much, but covers any type of fishing I would encounter.
  22. Looking at the 6'10" MH-R 2 piece casting rod for reaction baits. Does anyone own one and have any thoughts on it? Thanks
  23. I kayak fish primarily, bank and boat sometimes. I use medium and medium heavy rods with fast to extra fast actions. Medium fast and medium extra fast rods do the bulk of the work for me. The medium heavy more when the vegetation gets thicker. You do lose some stability and hook setting force from a kayak, but you learn how to adapt. There is a ton of factors involved here though. But if you reel down until you feel the pressure of fish and set the hook, you should be fine. I fish both mono and braid, which can make a big difference how the rod "behaves". Love that feeling if being pulled by a big fish, pure joy
  24. I envisioned hours spent at numerous hardware stores and it's just not worth the time or frustration. Easier to call the manufacturer. Even if they charge shipping, it's worth it to me and my sanity
  25. Local buy and sell site, well the guy was an hour and half away, I paid extra for shipping. This is the casting model, can't wait to get it out on the water
