  1. So I think I found a cool piece at a yard sale this morning. I got 3 fly rods and he threw in a Martin auto reel model 27 and the only patent number on it was issued 1939. That is about all I know about it. Is there anyone who might be able to give me some more info on here? I know this is a bass forum, but I'm hoping for some help. Thanks in advance.
  2. I like the Redfield brand. I've had one on the rifle my father gave to me and it finally failed. They aren't the original though now that Leopold owns them. When I worked for a sporting goods dealer I sold them and Nikon. So when I bought a replacement I got my pick. (Nikon prostaff). They seem like very good quality scopes from my experience and I never had one returned for problems.
  3. So does anyone have any luck with the whopper plopper at night? Friday night the night before the full moon my buddy and I went out. We started on the water at 8:30 pm and stayed till midnight. Within minutes of getting to our spot he caught his first. A couple casts later he caught another. His whopper was on point. But as the sun went down he got a couple mis-strikes. On the other hand once the sun was down and the sky was dark my wakebait and jitter bug started getting hit while he threw the plopper for the next 2-3 hours. We were in the same waters and the bite was a little tough but I was catching fish from the back of the boat in waters he had hit and I caught bass where he didn't have a single strike. In fact once it was dark he didn't get another strike. Is this common? Does anyone else have this issue?
  4. I like the pumpkin with a chartreuse tail. It has consistently caught fish from the bank for me. I usually Texas rig it though.
  5. I must confess that I put a proper reel on my baitcaster this spring. It broke. I'm also broke, so I put the spinning reel back on. I don't feel so bad about that, but this evening I took my daughter fishing. She doesn't know how to operate a baitcasting reel so I gave her my spinning "combo". She caught her first ever lmb about 16" and 1.5lb. She loves fishing and now she is stoked for bass. Total for the trip is 2 lm and 1 rock bass. All on a black jitter bug.
  6. I buy my jitterbugs there. They have the large black with a rattle. That's what my pb came on.
  7. Last name and combined with the smartest sea creature. Stole it from my brother for a forum name. He uses it for gaming. My normal screen name was taken.
  8. I'll be in touch.
  9. Is anyone familiar with the 6.5 grendel? Have a built one that the builder let go for $550. One heck of a deal imho. Just read through I see another guy has a build.
  10. So I took the kids fishing today. 77° sunny bluebird skies. Slight stain to the water. Nothing was working. So instead of bass I figured we could try for a reaction bite from the local chain pickerol. I cast once with a 1/4oz red double silver blade spinner and caught this. A 14" rainbow trout. Worst part is I hate catching trout because they are too fragile. I don't eat them so I always have to find someone to give them to.
  11. I would use a lower rod and higher tackle.
  12. The only one I found in my area hasn't been active in a couple years. There is a club finding topic on here that I had found. Search in the forums.
  13. My pb was 6.5 on the money and exactly 22.5" based on your measurement I'd say its in that range.
  14. Not sure why the pics are sideways. Oh well. First 3 of the season. Pumpkin seed creature bait on a jig head and a black purple creature jig.
  15. So I have gone out 3 more times. Tried some heavier lures and put 12# flouro line one. It works great and I caught my first 2 lm of the season on it. They are finally moved up and into pre spawn condition here. I'm very happy with my rod now. Thanks for the advice guys.
  16. Spinning is where I've always gone. I enjoyed years of good fishing on spinning tackle. I have had a baitcasting rod for years but only put a proper reel on it last summer. I will be throwing some heavier baits next I get out. If it doesn't work for me ill do some switching around. I spent years blaspheming the bass gods so I will have to be careful. I will just have to get some more time to play with it before I give up.
  17. Thanks for all the advice guys. I will definitely step up in lure weight. I put a bps bionic plus reel on it. I only had 45 minutes to fish on my way home from work yesterday. I didn't expect miracles but was pretty concerned about the initial impression I had. Ill have a ton of more opportunity and lots of time on the water this year to get truly acquainted with the rod. Thanks again guys I really appreciate it.
  18. So, I took my new rod out yesterday. I was fishing from the bank with my new rod that I got for Christmas. It was the rod that I wanted, but after using it i move have made a mistake. Now, I know that I may catch some flack, but I love my 6' m ugly stik so I requested a 7'6" ml ugly stick. Either I'm casting wrong, which could be the case I'm new to baitcasting, or i have the wrong weight of bait (1/8 spinner). When I was test casting I was able to cast a hookless spoon about 30 yards (3/8 oz.). But at the lake 10 to 15 yards was the best i could get. The rod seemed to be very sloppy on the release and I think the wobble was hurting my distance. Throwing a jig of similar weight on the 6' was producing close to double the distance with half the effort. My question is this. Should I throw light or heavier baits before I give this rod up for just a back up? Is there a technique I should try to get better payout from the lighter rods load up? Or am I just doomed to look on in envy of the guys that throw 200$ rigs and just be happy to be fishing. (I'm always happy to be fishing). Thanks for the advice in advance. I can't afford to step my rod collection up in price point at the moment so advice on what I have is all I'll be able to use for this season.
  19. I like a black rooster tail with gold or silver blade depending on water clarity. I rarely dead stick so its only one rod for me. My favorite trout setup though is my fly rod stringing minnows.
  20. The only aquarium in my house is set up as a terrarium and has a 4' ball python in it. I uses to keep a painted turtle when I was younger though.
  21. So I just picked up a side view depthfinder. I have a bottom view already. Where would you guys mount the separate transducers? I was thinking, since ill have the screens in 2 separate locations, about leaving the bottom view on my trolling motor and transom mounting the side view. My buddy fishes back boat so he can keep an eye on the sideview. Any advice appreciated. Ps. They can't be hooked together to use one transducer. They don't support ethernet cabling .
  22. Yea i'm fairly unconventional. I just haven't had the budget to be a bait monkey. I bought 3 spinners last week (my first 3 ever). That was big for me. I haven't really been experimental in baits. I know what has worked in the past and I find different ways to use those baits. Can't say I've e every been skunked more than one trip in a row. @fishballer06 check my post in the bass fishing blasphemy thread that'll really make your head explode. Lol
  23. Yes its 68 and thunder storms today and snow flurries Friday. Last week I wanted to get out in sunny and low winds day. I couldn't though so I have to go in the snow Friday.
  24. Thank you. This will be the earliest in the year that I have ever fished for bass. I really have no idea what to throw.
  25. I'm thinking the same.
