  1. I did a bang up job explaining that. First, I meant the second blade not the hook. In general, if half or more of the first blade extends past the hook, a trailer hook is usually beneficial. But the eye on the head will also be a marker where it lines up on the second blade as well - if it's about even, you should probably be alright without a trailer hook. Of course there are exceptions, but that's my general rule. Usually I find I don't need a trailer hook when the hook and blades are about even.
  2. As a general rule of thumb, if the eye of the spinnerbait starts on or after the second blade, generally those are the spinnerbaits you want to use a trailer hook. If the eye starts before the hook, you probably won't need one. So using a longer hook may very well reduce or remove your need for a trailer hook depending on the layout of your spinnerbait.
  3. I started with KVD 1.5s and Rat-L traps. They typically work pretty well in most situations, so that's an all-around safe bet if you don't know what to throw. Other favorites of mine has been the River2Sea Ish Monroe Biggie Smalls and the Megabass S crank can really catch them when the fish are really active, but don't worry about that now, worry more about fishing it. Throw them around weed lines and places where bass come to feed. If you can bump a squarebill off wood or rocks, that will often trigger a bite as well. You can then branch out to poppers and jerkbaits on the same rod as well.
  4. The catch to this thread is that Jeffrey for whatever reason cannot stand and fish when on a bass boat or the shore... "Can you stand and fish on this kayak while trolling?" "I don't see why not." "Great, because I can't stand and fish"
  5. I have the Steez SV TW, it's a really nice, comfortable and light reel with great braking and it casts noticeably further than other Daiwa SVs in lower lines.
  6. Yeah, no I don't. I've literally been so tired that I make it through my day and can't focus on much of anything at all. Now I'm just waiting for Saturday to go fishing (71 and a full moon? Sign me up!) and playing guitar again and so forth.
  7. The Full Contact Finesse isn't exactly a broomstick. It's kind of a MH-H that is made for fishing jigs, but not a full on frog rod by any means. That said, the Marshall can handle jigs with lighter cover very well too but I would say the Full Contact Finesse is probably better for what you plan to use it for and wouldn't overlap with something like the Full Contact (frog rod).
  8. I use Sunline SX1 12# for all my spinning rods with a 6-8lb leader. It's quite abrasion resistant for a thin line, no freys etc. Got a large spool and a half and I'm set for a while.
  9. This is my recommendation as well as long as it's not being used with line much over .013" in diameter. My kid has one of each, they perform and behave nearly identical to each other and are really well performing reels.
  10. I would look at the Tatula not the XT as a comparison to the Curado. It's a really nice rod and own several Tatulas myself so I can confidantally recommend them but the new Curados are also really nice rods so I don't think you're going to be disappointed either way.
  11. So a lot of you may notice I have been around, but less active than usual. Well for the past year and a half or so, I had been really tired, struggling to make it throughout the day and be productive at work, let alone around the house. I mentioned this to my doctor who is like that's probably because your vitamin D is low. Now I can take as much vitamin D as I want, and it will still be low, seems to be something I inherited from my dad but it's never been this bad. Well back in June, my foot blew up with a severe gout attack - the first since I quit drinking beer. It got better when I was on vacation at the end of the month, but got worse again in July. So there went a month and a half of fishing. Come August, I had some back pain that never went away. Eventually it got worse and I started getting the chills and the sweats. I happened to have an appointment with the kidney doctor, so I held off going to the emergency room and the kidney doctor immediately noticed a huge drop in kidney function, took a urine test and decided to do a biopsy. Turns out I have an autoimmune disease attacking my kidneys. The good news is with a long term of high dose prednisone, further damage to my kidneys should be prevented and he is hopeful that my kidney function will return back to its prior baseline over time. After one dose of prednisone, the back pain was manageable again and I was able to make it out fishing again. Even though I can only sleep about three hours a night, I feel like my old self again for more than a few minutes a day. I am just glad it's a warm fall and I can still get some fishing in. Got a few good ones at Lake St Catherine a couple weeks ago, and it's supposed to be beautiful on Saturday so I'm going to try again.
  12. The Mojo Bass rods are very solid for the price. If you can swing a little extra, the Victory rods are worth every extra penny. My kid has both the 7'3" MH/F Marshall and the 7'3" H/XF "Full Contact Finesse" rods. The latter is a very good jig and texas rig rod, and the Marshall is your all purpose medium heavy (and maybe better for football jigs due to more bend). He also has the Mojo Bass spinnerbait rod. Since you plan on also throwing some treble hooks, I would suggest to go with the Full Conact Finesse and the Mojo Bass Spinnerbait rod you already are considering as it has a bit of bend in the tip and will handle most moving baits well.
  13. Not in the slightest. If you want the best distance, go Shimano. If you want the best control, go Daiwa.
  14. Daiwa J-Braid x8 Grand is pretty solid for me, doesn't frey. Powerpro Maxcuatro is pretty good, thin and quiet too and worth a look. Sunline SX-1 12# for spinning gear.
  15. As I am looking to sell my kayak next year and upgrade to a pedal kayak, I will likely sell it with my fish finder which is already mounted and buy a new one at a small cost. So if I decide to upgrade primarily for more pixels, would I be better off going with an Echomap Ultra 10” or a GpsMap 943xsv? The Gpsmap would ultimately be slightly cheaper but fitting a larger screen shouldn’t be an issue.
  16. Yeah a 1/4oz weight with a senko seems to be about as high as I’d ideally go. It throws them nicely weightless or with lighter weights too. i have used my kid’s Sierra with 3/8oz spinnerbaits and no trailer and it’s passable.
  17. I’ve talked to a lot of guys who do really good night fishing in September and October. I always figured it was more of a later spring and summer thing and that’s when I generally do the best.
  18. Fair enough, I was hoping it would spark discussions. I’m on a discord server which has a kayak fishing channel. There’s a few regulars in there but they’re all active. Most of them also live within a three hour drive from me too and have fished many of the same lakes which makes it a lot more interesting which is why I thought of it
  19. I rarely use a trailer on spinnerbaits, only if I'm getting short strikes and I usually try a trailer hook first. For chatterbaits, I like the Lake Fork Live Magic Shad, 3.8 - 4.8" Keitech fats upside down or the X-Zone Pro Series Swammer. Yum Swim Dingers also work good for a lower profile.
  20. I would suggest using a larger reel for 10# for best performance. I would say at least a 3000 size, but a 3500 or 4000 would be ideal. Most 2500s are rated for 10lb line which probably averages .011 or .012in, and Tatsu is a little thiner, so you can try it but I don't expect it to be ideal.
  21. I have the Steez BC1 (little longer tip and heavier but better balanced) and it's a fantastic all-around jig rod. It has a little more bend than the BC2 but not so much I can't pull them out of laydowns or pick up bites just fine. You're going to love it. I would add some U45 cork sealant to that cork the day you get it though, Daiwas cork pits the worst. Both rods are generally interchangable in their usage.
  22. Does anyone have a Tatula MQ and is it worth it over a discounted Tatula LT? I love my LT, the bail is spaced comfortably for casting for my hand size, it's lighter and has an anti-reverse switch which I prefer having. Looking at adding a third spinning setup for next year so I have to wonder if I should get the Tatula MQ or another LT. EDIT: I was wondering why I didn't have any replies on this, I posted it on the wrong forum.
  23. We don't have a forum for site suggestions so I'll put this here. Hey @Glenn I was thinking maybe we could make a forum specifically for kayaks separate from boaters forum. What do you think? Maybe everyone here will think I'm nuts and not be into it as well, but I was hoping it would spawn more kayak fishing discussions that way. What do you all think?
  24. It's manageable in clear water but not ideal with a 3/8oz chatterbait and a light trailer, but I'd step up to a 704C which will throw larger trailers or even 1/2oz chatterbaits and some grass. You will be overloading the rod a little, so don't try to bomb cast it.
  25. Very nicely done, way to make it work for you
