  1. Just took a pass through the clearance aisle at my local Walmart, all z-man plastics and Ned heads were marked down to $1 a pack
  2. When you tighten the knot down and the lines going around the hook eye look like X instead of ll. This happens when you make the overhand portion and the lines twist
  3. Length of the rods would be my concern. The bottom fishing I do with my family on Jefferys/Scantum/Stellwagon is usually done with a rod around 6' to 6'-6". We use Shimano trevala rods. I took a 7'-4" rod out one day and it just seemed too long and awkward for jigging.
  4. I "work late" maybe 2-3 days a month. Realistically i get out early 2-3 days a month and spend that time, and maybe a little longer if the bite is good, fishing a pond near my office.
  5. I used this basket on a 16' boston whaler to hold the anchor and rope. It doubled nicely as a drift bag when we only needed to slow up a bit. On my canoe, i use the same principle but replace the basket with a 5 gallon pail with some holes drilled into it.
  6. Doesn't look nearly as bad as the tape and gauze that will be attached to you after removal of suspected cancerous items. Any hat/buff/shirt/pants/etc. you are willing to wear to protect your skin is acceptable in my eyes.
  7. He has title. I figure all the wood will need to be removed and replaced, it's not in the best of shape
  8. Hi all, I just got offered a 1983 mirrocraft tournament fisherman with a 60hp Johnson on the end. Boat was kept inside until the current owner got a new boat about 3 years ago. It's been sitting outside ever since. Motor was winterized but hasn't been started since. The boat looks to be in ok shape beyond a little tlc. There is a casting deck and leaning post on the bow as well as the stern and it looks like a custom (plywood) dash on the starboard side. Were these original or is it most likely he added them over the standard bench seats I see in most aluminum boats of this type? I'm looking for any information on what this boat may be worth. It was offered in place of cash for a job I am doing at the gentleman's house. I am inclined to take him up on the trade because I know I would use the boat and this is the right size for my boys and I to get out on the water with. Any thoughts?
  9. Here in NH, any lead weight or jighead weighing less than 1 ounce is not permitted to be used
  10. If you cartop a canoe or kayak there is a free launch off of Stickney Rd but there is only a few places to park and it can fill up fast on nicer days.
  11. About 3 years ago I stayed at Belgrade Lakes Four Seasons Cottages on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes region. Had a blast catching SM and trying for the pike that inhabit the waters.
  12. Its been said countless times on the forum that if you can see them they can see you, they might have been wary enough not to bite just by your presence. As for catching them, if you can sneak up on them, a weightless fluke or senko usually can get a bite or two
  13. To go with towing a boat, no. The tongue weight will take all the rattle out. If you plan on using the receiver for other accessories then it becomes personal preference.
  14. Got out for the first time in about a month on Saturday. No soccer because of the holiday weekend so I got a chance to take my son with me. Started out around 8 AM by hitting up some laydowns. I managed 6 fish with the biggest being ~18", all on a tx rigged senko. My boy spent the time I was fishing the wood casting a jerkbait around the edges of the lily pads. He must have caught 20 pickerel. He would know when the bite was coming because you would see the pads explode as the pickerel came charging out. Ended our day around 12 PM as the bite shut off completely. Water temps were 63.5 to 65.7 depending on time of day and where we were.
  15. Our trucks at work have a square stock steel ladder rack that bolts to the top of the bed. The rear cross piece gets cut out, two pieces of round stock get welded to the inside of the back uprights and smaller pieces of round stock welded to the bottom of the cut off piece. It makes it so that we can remove the top back bar to get any equipment in and out that would have height restrictions by just lifting one side out and swinging it out of the way. I'll try and get a picture.
  16. This past weekend I met up with some old friends and started talking fishing. One of them lives in his parents old house on Millville Lake. I grew up fishing here and he has granted me access to fish it again. It's been about 15 years or so since i last wet a line on this lake but from my memories the bass fishing was excellent. He did stress to me that the lake has undergone some drastic plant type changes in the past few years. It was always lily pads and coontail from what i remember but now it is thick with Najas grass in depths from about 2'-8'. Anybody have any insight on fishing this sort of plant type, it is not native to the area. I have attached a link to the navionics page showing depth maps. Any thoughts on where to start? The inlet is located at the northern most end and the dam is on the eastern edge just as the lake opens up. The south west end is loaded with stumps along the shore. Most homes have a dock. https://webapp.navionics.com/#boating@13&key=mzedG`ctqL
  17. I haven't had the chance to fish for snakehead but I think maybe a set of jaw spreaders and some longnose pliers or hemostats would help
  18. My family only uses Shimano rods when we are fishing the saltwater so my opinion is a bit one sided but I would suggest the Teramar series. I think the 6-6 is a medium fast but only handles up to about 1/2 oz. Our standard is the 7' medium fast for almost all the inshore (flounder/fluke, striper, blue) fishing we do beyond catching bait.
  19. neither of those options are going to be able to handle a 3/8 to 1 oz bucktail in a medium power
  20. I was recently gifted an older Lowrance x4 fish finding sonar. It's from a friend of mine who decided he needed the latest and greatest on his boat and offered me the old "black and white" unit. It works great on my canoe and has opened up my eyes on bottom depth and profile on a few of the bodies of water that i fish as well as the temp that the water is at. I do have a question though. Is it possible to see a thermocline on a unit such as this or is its technology old enough that I shouldn't bother? I ask because one of the lakes i fish has a lot of water that is 30+ feet deep and I have always just excluded it thinking it would be below this line anyways and i have never caught a fish in that depth during the warm months.
  21. pumpkin seed *edit* but after reading pondbassin101's quote below i'd say he is right, redbreast
  22. Spent 8 hours out on the water late Saturday night through early Sunday, lots of activity from the beavers on my home pond but only one tap from a fish all night. I tried t-rigs, poppers, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and a jig. Only thing to get a nibble was the t-rig
  23. I fish primarily out of an Old Town Guide 147, I believe it has the same uncomfortable plastic seats but no back rest. My wife got me the Sit Backer seat from LL Bean as a Christmas gift this year. It just straps onto the existing seat and is a fairly cheap option ~$40. It makes the seat easier to sit in for extended periods. Don't know if that would help but it is a lot easier than changing our the seat completely
  24. Thanks for all the responses. I figured it was going to be time to do some harvesting. This is the only body of water that I've been having this type of issue with and it's also the only one my other half is ok with me stopping off at on any random day for a few hours because it's so close to home and when I get the "where are you" call I can say just down the road
  25. Hi all, First time posting after lurking for a long time. I have been fishing a small 13 Acre pond by my home for the past 6 years. Max depth is ~14' and there is a shelf that runs around the entire edge that goes from 2' to about 6' before it breaks sharply to 9-10 and then gradually slopes towards the middle. It has never been a fantastic producer but i would consistently have 8-10 fish days. I am one of the only people that I know of that fishes it on a regular basis. I have started to notice over the last 2 years that the bass population seems to be missing. Last fall i went 4 weeks without catching a bass. This spring, with the crazy weather in the northeast, was a disaster. I got out again this weekend and finally managed to catch a bass, it was ~8" long and tucked up almost against the shrub bushes that form the perimeter of the pond. I tried for about an hour more hoping that i had figured out the days pattern and couldn't get another to bite. What I have noticed is a huge boom in the population of crappie in this pond. I caught the first one about 3 years ago on a 6" black Mr. Twister phenom worm. Now it seems like there are so many that I can't go a day without catching one. This past weekend i must have caught 50 of them. It didn't matter if it was a senko in the shallow weeds, a jerkbait along the deeper weed edge, or even on a small frog in the lily pads. I've even caught them on a jig and craw near the 1 premium laydown the shoreline has to offer this year. This pond has become so good for crappie fishing that I started taking my 4 year old with me. Anywhere I stop, I just let him drop a small bait, a 2" Berkley Powerbait swimbait in firetiger is his favorite because it is a "wiggly fish", and he just bounces it for a few seconds before he hooks up. He loves it and I enjoy taking him but it makes me wonder, with this many crappie around, is the bass fishing done?
