Good day casting in the yard!
Well, I fish a concrete pond in my backyard. Although I have never caught a fish, after a few beers and at night, I sometimes get a few bites! 8-)

light duty spinning combo
The minimum I use is an Avid AVS66MLF. This is my panfish rod, but I have landed a 6 1/2 smallie and several 20+ rough fish on this rig. My best story is a 7 lb German brown trout caught while anchored on the White River. The fight lasted more than 45 minutes and was very challenging! 8-)

light duty spinning combo
Well, the problem with Kentucky Lake and the entire Tennessee River system is that you never know what your're going to catch. If you are specifically fishing for white bass, bream or crappie you might get away with an ultralight rig, but if you target smallmouth, it won't work. First of all, the smallmouth are too big, but most of all, the drum, buffalo, striper and catfish will wear you out. Maybe you can land a 20+ trash fish in open water, but you'll spend the better part of an hour doing it! 8-)

Trimming Jigs
I never trim skirts or weedguards, I don't think it is necessary. 8-)

Wish the Eagles would have won...
This years Super Bowl match-up looks a lot like last year's, except the Cardinals have a much better chance of beating the Steelers than the Giants were given against the Pats! 8-)

Bass do learn!!! they are smarter then you think Read this
I think most of mine are the dumb ones, but the others ain't too smart! Maybe the California brontosaurus are different, but for the rest of the planet, if it swims it eats. To catch the World Record, maybe all of the planets have to be in alignment, but a double digit or the biggest fish in your water only requires a bait in front of its nose! In some Kali lakes they may load-in enough stockers that the fat girls may, literally, never move. Catching those fish would be a challenge. They seem closely related to aquarium fish. Wild bass are easier to fool. 8-)

Gran Torino
Wow! I haven't followed this thread closely, but it sure has turned negative. My take is quite a bit different: I think Clint Eastwood is one of the best actors of our time. He has worked in many films well distanced from his "Dirty Harry" persona. This was a great film, but others have been just as good. Grand Torino is Two Thumbs Up! 8-)

rods
This guy is just starting out, so staying with traditional presentations is probably the best course. Lots of guys used "undressed" jig heads for a variety of baits and presentations: Many types of worms, tubes and grubs to name a few. A shaky head is just another configuration of a standard jig. But back to the issue. For a traditional jig, chunks (plastic or pork), craws and creature baits are most common and very productive. Using a 8" or 10" worm for a trailer is "fishing a worm" not a jig. :

This is where you start:http://www.bassresource.com/beginner/beginner.html Then read everything else in "Fishing Articles" at the top of this page. After that, "Tacklebox". This section has numerous listings specifically dealing with jigs. Here is an overview written by Joe S : http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1189609782 8-)
