Two years ago at The 2005 Classic, Aaron Martens needed that fish to win! On the final day KVD crushed the competition with a whopping five fish total of 4 lbs 13 oz to win the championship with an astonishing total weight of 12lbs 15 oz. Martens finished in 2nd place, just 2/3 of a "keeper" (6 oz) away from the win.

That's another reason I fish 6" Senkos. Buegill rarely bite and if they do it's just a quick peck, not a tap.

Oil moving parts on the outside of the reel ONLY. The inside should be cleaned and lubricated with grease annually, but NOT periodically. LESS is better in this instance.

Buy premium 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks. I fish Gamakatsu and X-Point, some of our other members swear by Owner. Use a "snap-set" for your hook-set. (Lower the rod tip as you reel down QUICKLY. When you feel the fish, snap your wrists to raise the tip of the rod without moving the position of the reel relative to your body). This will consistantly drive the hook home. BTW, Welcome aboard!

Well, I can't get that jazzed about "lake records" but state records are something special. I guarantee you that anyone catching the "state record" smallmouth here in Tennessee is going to be having that fat girl autopsied! Hope it's me... : p.s. The exception would be the "lake record" at Dale Hollow.

I have an Avid AS66MLF. I use it mostly for stocker trout (Panther Martin, Rapala Countdown), white bass (Little George, Silver Buddy and live crawdads) and some smallmouth fishing (live bait) in relatively open water. The knock on the rod is a soft tip, too soft in my opinion, for effectively fishing soft plastics. I like the rod well enough to have it matched up with a Shimano Stella 1000FA, but I don't think it is the right rod for you if "all-around" is your objective. My soft plastics rig is St Croix Legend Elite (ES70MF) saddled with a Shimano Stella 2500FB, #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft and 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu or X-Point Offset Worm Hooks. This rod has a firm tip and could be considered my "all-around" spinning outfit, too.

Welcome aboard! Combinations on sale at any of the major retailers are always a good bang for the buck. To begin with I would suggest a 6 1/2'-7' Medium Power/ Fast Action spining rod & reel. Yep. Lighter line MIGHT get you more bites, I'm convinced it helps me. Still, conditions can determine the requirements. I'm still stuck with the same ole line (pun intended): #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft for spinning tackle. #12 original Hybrid or Ultra Soft for baitcasting gear.

Welcome aboard! For an "all-around" spinnng rod, I recommend 6 1/2' -7', Medium Power/ Fast Action. St. Croix makes a fine rod, but just because a rod is on sale doesn't make it a good deal. If you can be patient, great deals come up in the BassResource.com "Flea Market" all the time or save your money now and buy the Avid you want later.

Some people like the challenge of fishing a new lake, making discoveries on their own and learnig as they go. For those that want to have the highest probability of finding and catching fish from start to finish, a guide is invaluable. However, there is more to hiring a guide than just calling up a boatdock. I suggest taking a look at George Welcome's website for some suggestions about the process: http://www.imaginationbassin.com/ BTW, The very best way to pick your guide is through personal references. If that is possible for you, it saves a lot of time and trouble.
