Three Rod Setup, What Would You Use?
For enthusiasts, technique specific gear is fun to collect. However, three rigs cover all the basics: #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques

Right now the Menace is on fire. I'm fishing it on a 1/4 oz jighead rigged vertical. The presentation looks just like a minnow. I would also suggest the 5" Senko and Fat Ika.

I use original Hybrid. The purple smoke blends well in stained water; green is virtually invisible in gin clear water and clear looks cool on silver reels!

Yesterday At Pickwick
Split shot rig with #6 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hooks. We buy big minnows, at least 1 lb per person. We drift down river about casting distance plue 5 yards or so. Ideally, you want you bait and boat moving at the same speed. The key is having enough weight to tick the bottom without getting continuously hung up. Buy lots of hooks and weights, you are going to lose a few!

Problems Casting Jerkbaits On Baitcaster.
You should apply the conditioner as you initially spool your reel. It's really a "one time only" application.

Kent, which series were you recommending for him from G. Loomis? GLX is what I have, but the NRX is another step up. Bassin Blvd says the NRX compares to the GLX like a GLX compares to a 2X4. I don't know, that's a pretty bold statement! Before you jump in with both feet, I would recommend starting with a NRX 893C and see what you think.

Well, "right out of the box" doesn't really tell you much, most reels feel pretty good new, The advice of our membership is a much better guide, although it can be confusing and contradictory. The equipment I use has a history of proven performance: Smooth, strong, silent and reliant. I have been fishing many of my reels for more than a decade. These reels perform better today than the day I took them out of the box.

However, three rigs cover all the basics. #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits. #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures. #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques. I suggest starting with just one high quality combination, then building from that. s you gain more experience you will have a better idea on what you like and need. If you are not already comfortable with a baitcaster, I suggest starting with spinning gear. Specifically a St. Croix Avid AVS68MXF/ Shimano 2500FJ or CI4. Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6. The baitcaster I would recommend is similar: Avid AVC68MXF/ Curado 50E/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12. Both of these set-up will allow you to fish virtually every technique except big swim baits.
