St croix avid or Loomis Crankbait series rod???
I don't think you can wrong with either one of those. I don't have any experience with loomis, but I did recently get a AC70MHM and love it! It's rated for baits 3/8-1oz and this would be more than plenty to throw the baits you mentioned as well has some deeper diving ones. For those prices, you could pick up both and sell the one you didn't like and still come out ahead. Or, you will end up liking both and have to buy another reel! ;D

Mississippi - Lake Okhissa
You probably saw this but if you didnt here ya go: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/mississippi/homochitto/recreation/index.shtml I have not fished this lake but have wanted to. With it being a new lake the fish are still really naive. Like Calling Panther people wore the fish out the first month or so. If you do fish it, let me know how it goes. I'm thinking about going down there later in the spring.

When is it time to get the boat out?
I say as long as the water is liquid have at it..but for that to happen for you, you're going to have to wait a couple more months. You could take a road trip south??

Storm Thunder Dog?
Sorry, I don't have any of these but would like to hear some responses from people that do. My Wal-mart has several of these in the "clearance" section ($2.50 apiece).

Do small shallow bodies of water have a thermocline?
Sorry, I was trying to make it easy to understand. But that is exactly what it is. A thermocline is an obvious temperature difference between the hypolimnion and the epilimnion. It has historically been defined as the region where water temperature changes are greater than one 1 C per meter of depth. The lakes that Handy refers to most definitely are capable of creating a thermocline, but this stratification may not last very long. Because of the depth, wind energy, water temperature, and lake morphology. And heat is not what is warming the water. It is the energy from light known as photons. The intensity of these photons is what makes the water molecules more "active" which inturn warms the water. Turbid lakes warm faster because of particulate matter in the water, where clear lakes warm slower. Again, the lakes Handy is referring to I suspect are clear systems which inturn would warm slower and the hypolimnion would be more pronounced, the surface would warm first, and a thermocline would be produced. Just my $.02.

Do small shallow bodies of water have a thermocline?
Have you ever gone swimming in any of these lakes? If so, when you went swimming and your legs were dangling or you dove under the water did the water below feel cold compared to the water at the surface. If yes, then there was a thermocline.

So you have the Lamiglass SR705R? This would be a good choice if I were throwing Rapala DT14 and 16?

lakes turning over
Read this: http://waterontheweb.org/under/lakeecology/05_stratification.html One advantage of this (for the fish), is that they can use the entire waterbody because all of it is oxygenated. The water is all the same temperature and constantly mixing. When a lake is stratified fish mainly use the areas in the epilimnion but can use the water in hypolimnion. Keep in mind this change is gradual.

quantum reels
Everyone wants a reel that LOOKS good, but does the reel function like you want it to? It all depends on what you want this reel to do for you. It looks like this reel only comes in two gear ratios, the burner 7:1 and the normal 6.3:1. Will either one of these suit your needs or were you looking for a low gear ratio 5.1:1 to use for crankbaits maybe? It also appears that this reel has some of the same features as the accurist and the new KVD reel. For $20 more you could get either one of these (the KVD is $99 and the accurist is $129 with a $30 mail in rebate). Suggestion, go to your local outdoors place and play with the reels that you are interested in. Even put them on the rod you think you will use with it. You may like the one you mentioned on here or you may find out that that reel is too big for your hand, but a citica or revo would work out better because they are smaller and easier to palm. Its all personal preference! Now just buy one and go catch some fish!

quantum reels
I have three of the energy pt series baitcasters and am VERY HAPPY with them. Two of them I have had nearly two years now with no problems at all. A lot of people will tell you they are not a durable reel, but its all in how you take care of your investment. I am actually looking to pick another one up in the near future. The reason I have stuck with quantum is I purchased one in the early ninetys and that thing was a workhorse for more than 10 years. Lots of people get caught up in the stigma of "name brands". If you were to post a question about what baitcaster or rod you should buy, I bet you more than 75% of the people will say a brand they have no experience with. They are recommending what they heard, not what they know. My suggestion, buy whatever brand you think will suit your needs, just remember you get what you pay for!

If you could fish only 1 brand of lipless crank?

Deal or no deal!!! Let's see your deal!!!!
Last year at Walmart, when they were clearing everything out, I picked up an Abu Garcia Record Baitcaster ($149.95 @ BPS) for $50. At the time, Pure Fishing had the $10 rebate and I got that too. A $150 reel for $40!! Before Christmas I purchased a Quantum Energy 760 PT from The Sports Authority for $115. I've mailed in the $50 rebate quantum is offering right now. Hopefully I will be receiving the check in the mail soon. A $190 reel for $65!!

Topwater baits for 2008
I've had my eye on the Dep's Buzzjet Jr. and the ImaJapan Roumba. These baits are so different from most of the traditional topwaters. I almost pulled the trigger on purchasing a couple of the buzzjets last night. Darn baitmonkey

Lure Retrievers
What brand lure retriever do you have? I lost a Lucky Craft (RC 2.5DD) this weekend :'( and felt it might be time to invest in one of these. Sure sucked to see $15 go down the drain.

Looking for a very portable rod.
Not sure if your looking for casting or spinning models...but you might want to check this spinning model out: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_52902_100002002_100000000_100002000_100-2-2. It also comes with a nice covered PVC case for transport. Not sure of the length right now. I purchased it before Christmas and took it on a trout fishing trip in South America. I caught a few fish on it and was happy with the action. I paired it with a shimano sahara 1500.
