  1. When the water is in the mid 40's or higher I do well with jerk baits and crank baits when the fish are "up". When the fish are "down" finesse jigs work. Water temps that are just before freeze up, 39-40-41, is when deadsticking or super slow works. A small Dark Sleeper or what I call a Ned Jig works. I don't use a Ned rig because of too much brush. A Ned jig is just a light finesse jig (with a brush guard) with no skirt and a half a stick worm. These are fished on channel swings or banks in 8 to 15 feet (water is usually 3 feet of visibility). You know you are right when the bass you catch have brown bellies. Green weed beds will be in deeper water and are good if you can find them (maybe they are in those warm pockets the biologist talked about.) These pre-freeze up temps don't last very long usually. The whole late fall period doesn't last long enough for me! I only like ice in my coke-cola.
  2. "I kind of think this thread went off the rails a little." @rboat @Boondocks Hunter Yes, my fault. I apologize.
  3. " It reminds me of whale song, where humpbacks on one side of the world will change their song and humpbacks on the other side of the world do so at the same time. How? Again, who knows?" The magic of the natural world, gotta love it!
  4. Katie, "That's discernment of a higher order". So is that experience, intelligence. instinct, emotion? Or all of them? I know you are thinking, what kinda rabbit hole am I going down? Just trying to make people think, I guess. It's winter and I ain't fishing so that's my excuse!! @casts_by_fly @Pat Brown Good reply. Great study!
  5. Let's change the story to say your dog went into the room with the 2 cheeseburgers. Would a dog choose the one without the string or would he nab the closest one first?
  6. The point of the story has nothing to do with the color of your lure or line visibility, the point is DECISIONS. Do bass have the ability to make decisions? Humans make decisions based on a variety of things. Can bass?
  7. @king fisher said; They can't articulate why something doesn't look natural, and should be left alone, or even feared, but they instinctively know not to put it in their mouth. Reminds me of a story: You are hungry. You walk into a room with a table. On the table are 2 cheeseburgers. One burger has a string running from it and over the edge of the table, the other does not. Which burger will you pick up?

I have several old fishing books like Jason Lucas that I read every year. Also, Steinbeck and Heminway and others. "Big Two Hearted River", "The Old Man and the Sea" are fishing stories I love!
  9. I sand the shine off all my crankbaits or let the bass do it. Top water baits.....IDK.
  10. Good post and good replies. I hope young anglers are reading this. Maybe it will make them realize they ain't invincible. I have a cute story: My hair turned white at a young age. I placed an order at a fast food joint many years ago and the old lady behind the counter asked if I wanted "the discount". I said, "what discount"? She said the "senior citizen" discount. I said, "Christ, lady I'm only 35 years old, but I'll take it"!!!! 😠
  11. I think that fishing a lake that you have fished many times but approaching it like you've never been there before has advantages.
  12. @Swamp Girl Good post, Katie. First of all, you have to be around fish, then: I pick a lure to achieve the speed and depth that will produce bites and be efficient in the cover #1. Color, shape, sound, etc is always #2.
  13. Very Appropriate!!!!! Keep 'em coming, Mike!
  14. Yes, and it's driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!😵‍💫 To all who are still fishing.....Pul-ease keep posting. At least I can drool over your photos!
  15. The wild turkey is a great conservation success story! Iowa had its first season in 1974. I hunted for the first time in 1975 and I had a photo of a gobbler in my shirt pocket. I figured that if I saw a turkey I could pull out the photo just to make sure because I'd never seen one! 😂 I fell in love with the bird and it's hunting!
  16. @the reel ess My prayers are with you. There are lots of bass in your future!
  17. Tom, Should a separate battery (other than the TM battery) be used? Thanks for your input.
  18. I was ignorant of the date code. I figured if I bought new tires that they were new. WRONG, Bought 2 "new" tires from a local dealer just before a long road trip. One blew on the way to the lake, the other blew on the way home. Turns out they were 4 years sitting in storage! The dealer made it right. I learned the hard way.
  19. I think you are doing everything right. Everyone has a fish come unbuttoned from time to time. If an average angler loses 10% of the fish they hook that's a low number. If Katie loses 10% of the fish she hooks that is a big number! Just trying to put it in perspective! 😂
  20. Great post, Katie! My answers: I have complicated it. Not because I love complication, because I love simple as you do, but because I retired 9 years ago and started having health issues that put an end to bow hunting (I can't walk and my eyesight is not good). My wife also passed away at this time. So all my focus is on fishing, also the only shopping I enjoy is for fishing tackle! Simple because I carry 3 rods and 1 tacklebox in my small boat, and am very happy with my fishing!
  21. "Well, I need to spend my children's inheritance on something before it's too late, and they get it!" @Blue Raider Bob Spend it if ya got it! No sense in being the richest angler in the graveyard! 🤣
  22. Sad day. According to the forecast it's probably over for the year. Went out on a high note as I caught 10 on a jig 'n pig. 8 fow on brush in a channel drop. Biggest was 5 1/4. Cloudy, no wind, water was 48. It was another great year!
  23. As long as you fish with passion, love, and respect you are just as good as anyone else. I think flatsided CB work well in cold water. So how do I explain how well a WW works in cold water? It's about as round as I am!!! 🤣
  24. Great day on the water! The 2 biggest were 5 1/2 and a 6. All on Yo Zuri flat side crankbaits. Air was 57, water was 48. Lakeshore photo shows LOW water! Luv them ruby lips!
  25. Then we were both smiling! You were fishing in spirit! I thought about you every time that Wiggle Wart stopped wiggling!😁
