  1. I was told years ago that most freshwater fish taste better coming from colder water. I think this may be true. Anyone else think so?
  2. I've only eaten yellow perch one time. My brother in law lived in Iowa years ago. We got into a school of yellow perch in early April. It was cold. He cooked them for breakfast the next morning. I agree, they were super good.
  3. When I visited my wife's relatives in Wisconsin, I told them I ate an occasional black bass. They looked at me like I was crazy! They eat sleep, and breathe walleyes up there.
  4. True. I keep the biggest bluegills for fillets. There's never enough of them.
  5. This coming weekend, my family will celebrate two birthdays( son in law, and grandson) with a big fish fry. It's also the anniversary of my wife's transplant she had 13 years ago. She's still doing well. I've got several bags of crappie fillets, some bluegill fillets, and I'm sure someone will bring some catfish and some walleye fillets also. Side dishes are usually potato salad, baked beans, sliced tomatoes, and salad. I usually separate the cooked fillets on a big platter. The bluegill fillets are usually the first to get eaten. They're delicious! I always look forward to this. I'll plan to pick up a bottle of Zatarains Louisiana hot sauce. A couple of shots on the fish fillets is really good. We have the same discussion every year. Which fillets are the best? I like them all. If your given a choice between crappie, walleye, catfish, or bluegill, which do you like the best?
  6. A-Jay, glad to hear that she's doing better. I'm continuing to send positive thoughts your way sir.
  7. I'm 66. In the hottest weather I'll fish up to three hours. Cooler weather, I'll go up to six hours usually. The heat and humidity tire me out quicker.
  8. Bazoo, I use Mepps #3 and #4 undressed spinners. I'm not sure about other brands, but with Mepps, I retrieve them just fast enough to get the blade spinning, and I never have line twist. Other brands may vary, and as been said Spro are good swivels. Sampo is my own favourite.
  9. I'd been fishing a plastic worm in bright sun, and had caught two keeper size bass from a large cove, in about thirty minutes time. Some clouds came over, and the surface remained calm. I reached for my casting rod, and tied on my Zara Spook. I cast, and began walking my spook across the cove. The first cast brought nothing, but on my next cast, when I lifted my bait from the water, there was a 4" bass hooked on one of the back trebles. I never knew he was there. He'd gone for a wild ride, getting jerked back and forth across the cove. I carefully released him, and he bolted off, acting like nothing had happened. I've also hooked a couple of less than 6" bass fishing large 10" plastic worms. Sometimes, I'm amazed by these dinks. They'll try to eat something that's bigger than they are. I hope they grow up, and become big bass, and have the same voracious appetites. I'm sure others have had similar things happen. The dinks are out there. Tell me about the smallest dink you've ever caught on a big bass lure.
  10. Agree. We always heard that bass bite good the last hour before dark. Not always true. By that time, the lake has been baking in the hot sun all day. It's still hot.
  11. By this time of the summer, the heat and humidity have me feeling burned out. Now, I fish very early ( sunup) in the morning for around two hours, the last hour before darkness, and plan on night fishing this month. So, I'm ready for fall. Fall, like springtime, can be hit or miss. But, if you can be on the lake at the right time, it can be an excellent time to fish. Plus, the changing colors of the trees around the lakes make it even better. I say bring it on. Is anyone else ready for fall?
  12. Hello Scott, welcome from Missouri.
  13. Yes. It handles better also
  14. When you mention ribbon tail, I still say Culprit. But the only thing missing is the heavy salt. I've used a lot of Culprit worms years ago. The ribbon tail is roughly the body length as I recall.
  15. Sounds like a 4" Culprit? Again I don't remember them being heavily salted.

Try junebug. But, the key is slow retrieve. This works for me, but that's almost all I use anymore so there's that. The other guys probably have some other ideas. Good luck

I like Texas rig. Fish it slowly

Slow along the bottom with a Zoom Finesse worm.
  19. I'm getting ready to go out for a couple of hrs now. I'm using Yo Zuri Hybrid on one rod. I haven't had any bad knots or other problems. Maybe a bad spool,?
  20. I don't usually add a trailer. When I do, I use the Zoom twin tail trailer.
  21. My home lake has been taken over by a green slime on the surface . Bummer!! I have another lake I can fish, and I'll fish there. I haven't given up on catching my new PB. Still going for it, as well as catching other bass. I'll change my tactics a little for the new lake, and keep after it.
  22. Good bait. Old school rules.
  23. If I have to choose a confidence lure, I'll pick the plastic worm. Versatile, and catches bass. I use several different worms and a few colors.
  24. What would you say is your #1 plastic worm rigging method? And, why would you say it works best on the lakes you fish?

I still throw red occasionally. Zoom is the one I used the most.
