  1. I'm always reading, practicing casting, and fishing as much as I can. People tend to excell at things they love. And I love fishing.
  2. When I recently got my new cellphone, the kid showed me some wristwatches that were both cellphones and small computers. The tech has grown immensely. I never thought Id see the day. A wristwatch phone? Straight out of an old James Bond movie.
  3. A friend and tackle shop owner told me 40yrs ago that I would catch more bass if I learned to slow down. Overall, this has been true. A slower approach fits the baits I like the most.
  4. I fish slowly much of the time.
  5. I've learned to use my fish finder pretty well, but it's not hard. Where I've had trouble is doing basic functions, copy, paste, and similar things. I'm sure like most things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. I'm just happy I can log on to BR, and make these post. I've learned to use my fish finder pretty well, but it's not hard. 7. The Log Of A Cowboy, by Andy Owens. Detailed account of a trail drive from Texas to Kansas. I love books about the old west.
  8. One Christmas my daughter bought me a building computer to use on my job. It did all sorts of calculations for stairs, measurements and other stuff. It spent most of the time in my truck, because I couldn't put in the input needed to get the answers I needed. I just kept on doing things how I learned. Grab a scrap board, and figure my measurements, stairs etc, by division, multiplication, and addition. It was easier and faster that way.
  9. Good move jb. We need more of ghis
  10. In many ways your lucky. Most guys our age have a hard time with computers
  11. A- Jay, the local junior college near me offers a free course in computer training. I'm thinking about taking the course after new year. They're trying to help crusty old bass dudes like me to get with it. Like you, my wife is much better at it than me. She helps me out, when I get stuck, which is often.
  12. I was born in 1957 and graduated high school in 1976. There were no computers when I attended school. It's almost embarrassing to say, but I struggle with computers and related things. I'm wondering, are there any other folks here( around my age group), who have a hard time with computers? I recently got a new cellphone. I was lucky the guy at the store helped me get it set up. He was 22, and knew all about all the high tech stuff in the store. I felt like an old timer down there. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, but I'm slower than molasses when it comes to computers. Any of you guys struggle with computer tech like I do?
  13. I agree with J Franchos statement, " I wouldn't correlate skill with gear." I fish with an older friend who uses a couple of rods made in the 90s. They're heavier, probably not as sensitive, but he still catches lots of fish each season. He's slowly upgrading his stuff a little at a time.
  14. An example I use is a Fenwick HMG med spin rod, on sale for 60.00, with a Shimano Sahara size 2500 reel, which cost 80.00. Good combo for the money. Look for sales and shop around, and you can find some good deals out there. An example I use is a Fenwick HMG med spin rod, on sale for 60.00, with a Shimano Sahara size 2500 reel, which cost 80.00. 15. Mike, I've done consistently well with Roboworms, both 4" and 6". My best color is the purple Folkstead Special, on a light t rig or split shot rig.
  16. Love Mann's Jelly Worms. One of the first worms I really had success with many years ago. Grape and purple in 6" size were a consistent producer. A classic.
  17. I think a lot of times, it comes down to your own style and preference. Most guys can do well with mid priced gear. The mid priced gear we have now is way better than even ten years ago. For 250.00 you can get a very good rod and reel, with good care can last for many years.
  18. One thing I heard many years ago, is that bass fishing will be better after three days of consistent weather. Looking back through my notes, this has been true. Regardless of season, barometer, and other factors we hear about, I've had the best fishing when we've had three days of the same, or near same weather. Has this been true in your own fishing?
  19. My wife has a friend who is a retired schoolteacher. Her husband is gone, and she lives alone. I've helped her out over the last four years, fixing things around her house. A new disposal, storm door, and recently, some new boards on her back porch. Mrs. Watson has always offered to pay me, but I've always said no, and not accepted any money. I was surprised when I finished the porch, and she handed me a Christmas card. Inside was a gift card to Academy for 100.00. I started thinking about what to buy. I fish quite often with an old friend. I made a post about him some time back. Mike was wounded in Vietnam, and has walked with a limp since 1970. I kind of helped him get back into fishing after twelve years, when his wife passed on, and he gave up on things. Mike lives alone in a two bedroom senior apt complex in town. I'm happy to say he's back into fishing full bore. He lives on a fixed income, and doesn't always have a lot of extra money for fishing tackle. So, last Saturday my wife put together a tray of Christmas cookies, and we went to Academy, where I bought a new Lew's LFS casting reel. We visited Mike. He said," oh, did you get a new reel"? " No man, it's for you, it's your reel Mike", Merry Christmas". I only wish you guys could have been there when he opened the box and saw the new reel. Yes, it's only a reel, but it made all the difference to my old friend. So, I passed on one gift to another person. I felt good about doing it too. I'm looking forward to Mike catching some fish with his new reel this coming spring. I'm sure he'll put it to good use. So, in the spirit of Christmas, this " passing it on" worked out perfect. Mike was thrilled with his new reel, and I'm happy that I was able to give him this gift. Yes, it's only a fishing reel, but, to a fisherman, it was the best gift of all.
  20. I'll have to say 5 percent on an average day.
  21. Spring is a ways off for me, but I'll be ready. Clean reels, rods, and sharpen or change hooks. I'm usually ready far in advance.
  22. A-Jay, good one. I especially like The Zero Hour.
  23. I guess I never really looked at bass fishing terms compared to military terms. Good explanation Team9nine. Thanks
  24. Green pumpkin. I'll never know why, but it doesn't work for me me. Have tried worms, grub, tubes, etc. I gave up on it two years ago.
  25. I always ignore these names. Names are for marketing...
