The Tactical DD is a floater, but its the way it floats thats the juice. When you stop it, the bait wobbles and backs up towards a following fish which is why they suggest you throw it on braid. Braid means no line coil to pull the bait forward which lets it do its magic. I know of a few other cranks that will back up and on the right day the fish eat them with anger.

Auto inflatable PFDs would be perfect if they would just inflate every time they hit the water. I have posted this article on this subject in previous similar discussions. This is MLF pro John Cox's story about waking up on the bottom of Smith Lake after his inflatable did not work. Thats about what I use for my topwater creek setup. If they eat it, that soft rod will not let them come unbuttoned.

Me as well, and it is a joy to fish. I keep a 6" bullshad on it which it casts easily with a Tatula 200. I have not thrown anything in the 4oz range on it but think that would be towards that rod's limit. Maybe the next size up, the 7'9' Large Swimbait would handle that Bullshooter better. I have tried any number of retrieves, various stop and go mostly, dead slow some. The water I fish is not gin clear so no follows that I have noticed. What would yall say is the threshold on water clarity for glides?

I was so shocked when a 4lb smallie ate my topwater early this summer, I thought it was a drum! I did not know they got that big in streams. The rapid section just downriver spoiled my chance of a pic. What did you catch those two hawgs on?

Yes, the pros known best for frog fishing, Ish Monroe and Dean Rojas both say to bend the hooks out on new frogs. My amatuer opinion is very much yes also. Ive experienced poor hookup rates with LiveTarget's floating baits also. Not sure why but lots of reviews saying the same. Plenty of very good frogs out there to chose from. If LiveTarget is your favorite bait company of all time and you now feel hurt, please do not take this as a personal attack on your entire family, just my opinion.

Assuming when you say hookups, you had the fish on, a few possible factors come to mind. I recently fished with a friend who is new to the sport. I started throwing one of his rods and had a fish hit a topwater. His drag was so loose, I could not turn the fish so make sure your drag is set. Get that fish in the net! Too often I see guys wanting to play fish too gently. Spool your topwater rod with some 50lb braid and crank their butts to the boat! Next, nothing will unbutton a good fish faster than too stiff of a rod with treble hook baits. Gotta have some bend in the rod when throwing a plopper. Hope that helps man.

For lakes that spots are the main species, there are two groups. The larger group, and typically larger fish, are the roamers- big open water schools that follow bait and rarely see the bank. The second group live around the bank all year and are much easier to find and catch. These fish love wood. Just go from tree to brushpile with a small topwater, shakey head and dropshot targeting every piece of wood you see around the bank or on your sonar. Good luck man!

The chanwake is big bait, with a rattle and a small prop on the tail. It fishes loud. Have not fished the Megabass. Rapala BX Minnow is a good inexpensive option-it catches fish. If you can find the discontued StrikeKing WakeShad, it is the deal, especially for open water.

I regularly have to sharpen new VMC treble hooks right out of the package. If they won't stick in your thumbnail, they are not sharp enough.

Any portion of the TN River can be dangerous without mapping. Either buy a chip for your sonar or if you cannot afford that route, download Navionics on your phone and use it. Keep an eye on the weather as SW winds can make it very rough on Gville. Good luck man.
