My opinion. Bite detection is 99% time on the water and the other 1% can be attributed to things like your rod, your zodiac sign, if the cows in the area are lying down or standing, etc. 🙂 It’s like learning to drive. You start out very consciously turning the wheel to keep the car between the lines. Eventually, your subconscious mind learns to do the driving and you never think about the process of turning the wheel to keep the car in the road. I’ve done some reading on this. The subconscious mind responds much faster than the conscious mind. When your subconscious mind is interpreting what’s happening with your bait you will know you’ve got a bite before you’ve even had time to think about it.

If I had to guess I would say he reversed the polarity when he wired it. I don’t know if that would brick a unit. I’ve never tried it. Are you sure you checked the polarity correctly with your tester?

I don’t think a fish is going to see my bait and say “That’s a great looking worm but it’s on a shaky head. I’ll wait for a Texas rig.” I use a bait that I think will catch fish. How I rig it depends more on how I want to present it and where. That said a t-rig or some variation is very high up on my list. I almost always have one or two tied on.

Everyone seems to want to express the life expectancy of batteries in years. Time doesn’t kill batteries, cycles and lack of maintenance do.

The video below summarizes Buck Perry's theories on bass movement. Many years ago, I embraced these teachings, and it made me a better angler. Perry provides guidelines on where to find fish, and these methods are effective. However, he also explains why fish are found in these areas, and his reasons for how fish use structure have been mostly debunked by tracking studies and observations using sonar. His primary principle that 'deep water is the home of the fish' and that fish migrate from deep to shallow water using structure is mostly incorrect. It is now known that most, though not all, largemouth bass remain within a specific home range. They can navigate this range in darkness as if equipped with a built-in GPS. Although fish tend to congregate around cover and structure, making it sensible to fish these areas, they also roam extensively. The professional fishing world has been disrupted because tournaments are increasingly won by targeting these roaming fish. Anglers who defy 'the rules' by targeting non-conforming fish are achieving remarkable success. Distinguishing between cover and structure seems irrelevant if fish don’t differentiate between them. Bass can use both as a current break, an ambush point, and for protection. Perry suggested that fish could use an old fence row as a structural pathway between deep and shallow waters. Is it important to properly define structure and cover? I don’t know. I spent the first 20 years of my fishing life learning the rules. Over the last 20 years, I feel like I have been unlearning them. The rules help me guess where the high percentage areas are. Advancing technology has increasingly helped me evaluate the effectiveness of my guesses and at the same time it has taken much of the guesswork out of the game. If I can find fish do I need to know why they are there? At this point I have more questions than answers but I’m confident that I’m better off with unanswered questions than I am with incorrect answers.

No I think if someone can snag a fish using a sonar beam that is 10 feet wide, the fish should count double.

I didn’t start wearing an inflatable until I decided that my age requires me to wear one 100% of the time I’m on the water. Inflatables must be properly maintained. I wear a Mustang because I feel like they are the best. There is the added risk that it will not inflate. It’s a compromise for comfort when it’s hot. I wear a traditional life jacket in the winter. If I was running 70 mph I would wear one designed for high speed water impact and I would wear a helmet.

Buck Perry talked about structural situations where fish use what might be called cover as structural. While I’m a big Buck Perry fan, his explanation of how fish use structure has be proven wrong for the most part. So the question becomes how do fish use structure and cover? and do they sometimes use structure as cover and cover as structure?

I know it’s frowned upon but sometimes I’ll fish something even if I’m not sure if it’s structural or cover. 😆

Very interesting thread. People have been trying to define the rules of bass behavior for a long time. Structure and cover seem to play an important role in it, at least for the fish that are relating to structure and cover. Personally, I’ve lost faith in the rules.

I’m a firm believer in switches that get turned off at the ramp before I head home. It’s less important with LifePo4 batteries because the BMS should provide the same protections if it’s functioning properly. Still, switches are cheap and fires are not.

I agree with @Junger. I have one LifePo4 battery and it’s a Battleborn American battery. I have no complaints but in the end 12 volts from a $1000 battery is the same as 12 volts from a $300 battery. On Amazon, Battleborn batteries get 85% five stars reviews. LiTime batteries get 81% five star reviews and cost about 1/3 as much as the Battleborn. Battleborns have other features that make them better but not 3 times better. I’m confident that LiTime will be gone in 5 years and the warranty will be worthless but sometimes it makes sense to take the risk. You have to decide for yourself if you’re willing to take that risk.

They find a way to spawn even when you think they can’t. There have been years on Kentucky Lake where the water level has gone up and down by 5 - 10 feet constantly. You would think there is now way they could spawn. They always find a way.

It depends on so many things. Your outboard will charge the battery when it’s running. I’ve run more stuff than you have on a group 27 for 12 hours but I spend a lot of time idling around graphing which charges the battery. I ended up adding a 75 ah electronics battery because I was having issues with the voltage drop that resulted when I cranked the outboard.

I’ve enjoyed cooking for a long time. I’ve recently started using a very modern approach to recipes. I use ChatGPT AI. You can ask it for recipes and discuss the results with it. I had a bunch of mint growing in a pot last year. I discussed with ChatGPT the many ways I could use it to make Chocolate Mint ice cream and ended up with the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. Warning: If ChatGPT decides to take over the world as some have warned it could, it might start by poisoning you. 😆

Exactly! It's fun to post about rods and what rod is perfect for a specific bait. The problem is people who are new to fishing read these post and think they can't fish a bait until they get the right rod. What is the right rod for fishing a Senko? One rod might be perfect for one cast and less than ideal for the next cast. Are you fishing from the bank or boat? Do you make long cast or shorter precision cast? Casting, skipping, flipping, pitching? Are there trees overhead? What size Senko are you throwing? Carolina Rig? Texas Rig? Is it weightless? If not then what size weight are you using? Instead of carrying 50 different rods to make the perfect cast in every situation with a Senko, I just use a 7 ft medium heavy fast spinning rod 90%. That's my preference but it's as unique to me as the size pants I wear when I'm fishing a Senko.

A little research has revealed that Quantum and Zebco still have a facility in Tulsa and their own phone number so they appear to be more than a brand at least for now. Can’t say the same for Strike King. Rather closed their offices in Memphis and the Strike King address is the same as Lew’s address in South Carolina.
