Search and Follow-up Baits
Most of the times Mr. Senco does the job. However, sometimes I like a 6-8" worm T-rigged with a 1/16 oz bullet weight (especially for LMB) or a tube (for SMB). Sometimes a fluke will work too (for blows on baits that immitate baitfish). Experiment & have fun!

Polarized Glasses - article
Thanks, Great article, lots of info.My problem is that I have to wear corrective lenses (nearsighted), so I use polarised "clip-on"style. They are cheep, probably not to good but better than nothing. I vas thinking to order a pair of corrective glasses with polarized lenses. Has anybody on this forum had any experience with this kind of glasses? I would appreciate any input. Thanx, Alex

spinnerbait rod?
Doesn't have to be a designated "spinnerbait rod". Any 6 to 7 ft, medium heavy with a fast or moderatly fast action will do. Longer rod for distance, shorter for accuracy. There are some good clearances and sales this time of the year; I wouldn't spend more than $50. I agree with what was said previously.

Fishing from the back of the boat underated?
I remenber a TV show about a tournament a couple of years back. I think it was prespawn or postspawn fishing, the pro in the front was sight fishing, the amateur in the back didn't get any shots to catch anything. After a while the amateur started casting a C-rig toward the deeper water. He outfished the pro big time, cought the big fish of the day, and won the amateur 1st place( Ranger boat+money) The pro was catching males, the amateur got the females

Catch ratio improvement
I don't like "watter ski"-ing the fish towards me (horseing),except in thick vegetation or very snaggy water.I just keep enough presure to keep him out of snags: you develop a feel for how much presure is needed based on water conditions and tackle being used. There are certain techniques that require setting the hook strait up: flipping, drop shotting, etc mainly when you fish close to, or under the boat. For fishing at some distance (cast out and bring the lure back to you)in fairly open water, I very rarely hold my rod pointing to the ski. I always set the hook swiping the rod sideways and I fight the fish with the rod held sideways, to the oposit side of where the fish is swimming (for example, if the fish is going to my left I'll set the hook and hold the rod to my right). if it changes direction ,I am changing the rod position by bringing the rod up and than lowering it to the other side. I don't stick my rod in the water, don't think it does any good Just my $.02. Hope it helps.

Manns Baby 1-
I like it as a follow-up when I'm fishing top water baits (buzzer,walk-the-dog type) and the fish just blows on it. I usualy hook 'em on the baby-1. Also on top of shallow weeds and the inside weed edge. I use a medium power, medium action baitcaster with 10lb P-line (low memory) mono.

Whats your most productive prespawn lures?
T-rigged 6" lizard (Watermellon, junebug, black/blue) Spinnerbait (1/4, 3/8 oz, mostly white/chartreuse) Jerkbait (hard or soft), small to medium size Topwater, if the water warmer than 45-50 degrees and the weather is on a warming trend.

Crankbaits, snap or no snap??????????
I don't think there is anything wrong with using snaps/split rings/ O rings/etc, especially if the manufacturer recomands it. If a lure comes with one, I"ll use it. If the lure doesn't come with one I am using the "loop knot". I am checking my line often and retie as needed.

Carolina Rig Tips
EXCELLENT thread!!! I c-rigged a couple times but I kind'a "set it aside and forgot about it".When I tried it with a baitcaster it was a mess. I switched to a spinning outfit with 20lb power pro ,1/2oz egg sinker, bead, swivel, 3ft leader and gammy egw 2/0 hook with lizard, 6" worm or fluke with some results. I was feeling the bite but when setting the hook, the fish was mostly gone. might this be because I kept the line tight (to feel the bite), with no slack in it ??? I tryed Berkley Gulp 6' worm and I cought more catfish than bass. Did this happend to any of you, guys ??? I'll try c-rigging again later this year, 'cause I can't do it through a couple of inches of ice :-/. And now I have a lot of new stuff to try out. Thax for all info, Alex

Thin Braid Question?
I use 8lb and 15lb PP braid a lot, but only on spinning reels. Not so much for bass fishing as for walley(jigging and trolling) and steelhead (drifting). Most of the times I have a 3-6ft leader(fluoro or mono). It's wicked how much sensitivity you gain compared to mono on long casts or deep water. I used thin braid for bass fishing in weedy lakes with a short leader (1-3ft). It's ammaising(?) how easily it cuts the weeds(I'm not talking thick mats, but reasonable vegetation), and instead of ending up with 20lb of weeds and a small bass,You will have to reel in a much smaller package. Now, bass where I fish (smaller lakes in Michigan) dont grow that big ! DO NOT TOUCH THE BRAID WHEN THE ROD IS LOADED!!! (hung up, fish on etc.).It will cut your finger !!! Instead grab the spool. I cut my finger while setting the hook and didn't let go of the line. It's not pleasant and can ruin a day of fishing. Try it out, you might like it.

bps compared to other rods
I stand corrected, HAWGIN. I didn't specify what I understand by "top of the line". In my opinion that is a $350-650 reel paired with a $250-350 rod. Let' say $500 and up for a combo. On your list only Ish Monroe qualifies. Of course they ALL use quality stuff :there livelihood depends on having depandeble, quality tools. They are nog gonna go out there and try to make a living with a Scooby-doo outfit. Ike used Daiwa Advantage reels -$100 Ben Matsubu- on the crancbait rod used BPS Johnny Morris reel Shimano Curado is used by a lot of tourny guys, but is far from beeing the most expansive shimano( Calais @ $650) Denny Brauer at Lake Champlain used daiwa TDX rod&reels; not the most expansive( Steez @ $450) You see what I meen ? I apologise if I ruffled any feathers, I will have no more comments on this issue.

Best Bait casting reels
Right on ww2farmer ! I would add that is the fisherman that catches the fish, not the reel. But than, you don't whant "head ackes" I am for the midrange ($100-200)

how many canoe fishers out there
I'm a canoe guy too. I made a trolling motor bracket out of hardwood, attaches to the canoe by clamping 2 aluminum brackets (with1/4x20 bolts and wingnuts) to the sides of the canoe( gunnels?) I dont have stabilizers but i still ca fish standing up if it's not too windy. Sorry, I dont have pics at this moment, and everything is burried somewhere in the garage.

What's better than a Steez baitcaster?
I think I got the right answer to your question, REDLINEROBERT ! My answer is : "YOUR GIRLFRIEND !" Do I get some brownie points ?? ;D

Shimano at BPS. Oh NO!!!!!!!!
RIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I think it's a wrong move, they will lose popularity. Glad I'm a DAIWA guy !

Power Pro line
Agree with T-rig...braided lines are not suited for faster mooving baits like crankbaits or spinerbaits (in my opinion) because braids have no strech and you pull the lure out of their mouth, when they try to inhale the lure. Braids are good anytime high sensitivity is needed or you need to cut through weeds
-
Better than Power Pro ? ? ?
Power Pro for me ! For discoloration: 1-permanent marker 2- live it alone, fish don't care 3- don't be cheep, cut off a couple feet now and then ;

green pumpkin and watermelon
I agree with WW2FARMER. On top of that you shoul give an onest try to some kind of purple-ish bait (Junebug, tequila sunrise, etc). The colour purple travels the deepest through the water column so it is the most visible to mr. fish. For dark/ steined water or low visibility conditions try black( or solid dark colours)

when fishing live bait...
Yes, live bait will cach them, but WHERE IS THE CHALLANGE???????? : The most fun I get while fishing is figuring out how to fool them, not waiting for the bobber to go under....
