What should my IPT be for Jerkbaits?
I usually use a 7.3.1, but yesterday I tried a 6.3.1 and didn't like it for jerkbaits. It felt like it took twice as long to reel in the slack. I fished for a couple of hours and didn't catch anything, but at least I felt like I learned something about what my personal preference is. If you have different gear ratios, try them out and see which one YOU like better, it might be different than someone else's preference.

budget rods
I have a SLX 7'2 MH/XF and the tip is pretty fast, but the balance isn't good on them. The Lew's Hank Parker Speed Stick for $40 from Walmart is rated as fast, but it might be the fastest rod I have and it's pretty sensitive for the price.

To anyone that owns both the Shimano SLX AND SLX XT reel
I don't have the regular SLX anymore or I would. I just know the MGL spool fits into the regular SLX from watching REEL TEST on YT do it. I would think if the size 70 spool fits into the 150 of the SLX, that the 150 SLX would work in the XT 150, but I know you want to be sure.

- Fishing gear you think is worth the price, or not..?
The GX2 is what I caught the majority of my fish with this past season, 515 on video alone. I probably caught half my fish using it to fish Wacky Rigs, Neko Rigs, and a lot of T-Rigs and it did surprisingly good, but the action is great for reaction baits. I also caught my first two rainbow trout ever with it this past season, so it's pretty versatile. I used the 6'0 Medium, so the weight wasn't really a problem for me. I have four of them and never had any break or any other problems with them and I put them through a lot of abuse kayak fishing on rivers with them. I got 16 new rods this winter, but it will still have a spot in my lineup for moving baits in tight quarters.- The latest sale thread
$375 for a Kistler Z-Bone. Regularly $499, add to cart for $125 off. All rods on sale right now, $125 off anything if your purchase is over $499. https://kistlerrods.com/products/z-bone-fishing-rod?variant=29630928683056- New to Jerkbaits
On average people probably prefer a Medium Power or Medium Heavy depending on the manufacturer. I use a Dobyns Fury 703c most of the time and it's rated as a Medium Heavy, but more between M and MH, rated up to 3/4 oz and I can throw 1/2 oz or 1/4 oz jerks on it. Fast Action, would be the choice of most, but some do like a Extra Fast, and some who like a Mod Fast. 6'10 or even shorter, but you can use a longer rod depending on how tall you are and where you are fishing from. You can use either Baitcaster or Spinning rod, whatever your preference is, but I think most use a Baitcaster because they like a higher gear ratio that can be hard to find in a spinning reel. 7.x.x or a even a 8.x.x is probably best to pick up the slack faster. You can throw all jerkbaits on one rod most of the time for the average size Jerks that are between 1/4 and 1/2 oz. Of course, I'm sure there are some micro jerks and big heavy jerks that couldn't be thrown on the same rod though. I think most people will use 10# and some 12# line. You can use FC, Mono, or a Braid with a leader, but I'm sure some will just use str8 braid. It's all depends on your rod. A lot of people use FC, but if you have a really fast rod you might want to use Mono to help keep the trebles pinned, and if you have a really soft rod Braid will help. As far as colors, I think it's probably better to try to match the bait fish that the bass are feeding on and it depends on the clarity of the water also. I like more natural colors in clearer water and flashier, easier to see colors if the water is stained. These are just my opinions, I'm far from an expert and have limited experience compared to most people on here, so take it for what's it worth and see what others say.- Are any lakes closing in your area?
My wife is a teacher for the City Schools, and someone told her that Ohio was issuing special licenses to some Government employees that would allow them to be on the roads. If this is true, they may be planning for a total lock down and may be pulling people over if they see anyone out driving. Regardless, I am fishing this year, even if I have to risk going to jail for it. I will walk or ride a bike if I have to.- Lighter than Ultra Light?
A lot of people seem to frown upon using UL for bass just to get a better fight, because it puts a lot of stress on the fish and increases the chances of mortality after releasing it and also makes the fish too tired to be able to normally defend against predators.- Lingering ice out conditions
I had some success this past week in similar conditions by fishing a lipless and varying the retrieve. The first couple of handle turns I will reel fast to get the rattlers making sound and then I slow down as much as I can and even throw in a slight pause after every 5 rotations, and then I repeat that process again until reeled all the way in. Besides that, I've also only caught fish on a jerkbait this winter.- When do you take hard baits out of their package?
I take a picture of them. Log them into my bait list with the Name, Color, Size, Weight, Depth, and which rod I will use for it. Take them out of the package and save the package. Put hook bonnets on them if they have trebles, before putting them into their Plano box.- Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
Got two Fate Blacks for $40 each shipped. Definitely not as good as most of my other rods but for the price I paid they were a great deal. I got the 7'1 MH/F and it weighs 5.0 oz., so not the lightest rods and not the best balance and I can spot out a few small imperfections in the a couple of the guide wraps, but overall for $40, I'm pretty happy with them, they seem like good all around rods, but this Medium Heavy is pretty much a medium. No way I would pay $100 or even $75 for these rods.- Fishing gear you think is worth the price, or not..?

We may need to put you in quarantine, with no internet! How many rolls for a Jackhammer?- Does your State have a program like the Fish Ohio Recognition Program
Your States qualifying size is much bigger than Ohio's, especially on some fish, but that probably shows how much better the fishing is in your State. Your Largemouth = 21" and Ours is 20" Your Smallmouth = 21" and Ours is 18" And those are the close ones, your Channel Cats have to be 30" and ours 26". Virginia also has bigger qualifying sizes, wow. The fishing here must suck after looking at some of these. I don't even want to see Florida's qualifying size list.- Looking for a producing spinnerbait on the cheap that also produces.
I can vouch for those Walmart $1 spinnerbaits, they will catch fish, but he's correct about the skirt wanting to skip off, but that's easily fixed.- Does your State have a program like the Fish Ohio Recognition Program
I'm just wondering how many of you live in States that have fishing programs similar to the one in Ohio? If you're wondering, Fish Ohio gives out a pin if you catch a listed species of qualifying size. If you catch 4 different species of qualifying size in the same year, you get a Master Angler Pin. It's nothing special beyond self gratification, but does add a little bit of fun to the season. Some people have been collecting the pins for decades. I came up one species short in my first year of fishing in 2018, but earned one last season, with a Smallmouth, Largemouth, Rock Bass, & Yellow Perch. The link shows you what species are listed and the size they have to be. http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/fishing/fish-ohio-recognition-program#tabr3- Show off your Stuff

Nothing huge, but I'm just happy catching some bass in early March in Ohio, the ponds were frozen about a week ago. I didn't have a red lipless, so I used the next best thing I had which was one with big red eyes.- Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
No, it's the regular, I'm using it for terminal tackle. It wouldn't be the first time something was on sale right before or right after I got it, but I'm usually pretty good at finding good deals. I was hoping it would of been on sale for the classic, but only the other three were. $20, that would of been a great deal though. I love the number of slots, but d**n that thing is pretty heavy by itself.- Jerk/Crank/Chatter Rod
I use a Fury 703c for jerkbaits, but it's also good with chatterbaits and squarebills.- Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
- Which dobyns fury?
Out of the 734 models, the 734 Fury is the least versatile of them all because it has the fastest tip. Gary Dobyns has even said that the Colt 734 is better than the Fury 734 for everything, but jig fishing. The 703 and 733 might be more versatile in the Fury series, but it's limited to probably about 1/2 oz or under baits.- Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
LoL, two days ago you swore it was the last time you would be posting in this thread for awhile. The bait monkey must of took that as a challenge and looks like he won. ?- Top Water Bait Suggestions
There's a guy on Facebook selling 75's and 90's for $8 each and 110's and 130's for $10 each + shipping, but the more you buy the better deal it will be to ship. His name is Kyle Warden and it's listed in the Fishing Flea Market group by Bass Fishing Media. He has hundreds of them. There's also tons of auctions for custom painted lures and poured plastic and just about everything else. I know Facebook sucks, but the Fishing groups are awesome. Whopper Plopper Nation is another good group, full of pictures of big fish and people climbing trees among other crazy stuff trying to get their Whopper Plopper back. American Fishing Legacy is also only listing their used Dobyns rods in the Dobyns Group, instead of Ebay from now on, and they are also listing new Dobyns rods that they have overstocked for 20% off. If interested just use the search bar in the group and look up Graham Purcell, and it will show you the listings. - Fishing gear you think is worth the price, or not..?
