  1. it happens, if anything it may slack in the line, dont beat yourself up though, Ive set the hook at least 50 thousand times and just the other day, my hand being tired, was fuzzy+ I was zoning out, and didnt set the hook strong, and set it late, on top of that I had the drag set too loose, so while I was clicking the drag star down the fish ran at me got slack and jumped, pop i lost him. It happens, and I missed many MANY bass when learning, just because i didnt set the hook hard enough, had to much slack in line, etc. best thing I can reccomend for you to increase your hookup to d**n near 100% is to focus on fishing, and be aware of tensing your muscles on every cast, and keeping your mind awake, getting a good nights rest, and swinging for the fences with a trig/jig, and just reeling him in as fast as you can. I cannot stress enough how much being healthy, awake, and aware can help increase the hook set. Even with me setting hooks into bass thousands of time, its just user error, or sloppyness that comes with humans, we arent perfect, and accepting that will make you a much better angler, but to be the best angler, try your best to fix these mistakes by being aware, awake, and ready. other than that it just happens, its never a gaurentee you will land the fish on your line, sometimes the mouth tears, sometimes the hook doesnt grab flesh, sometimes a shake can throw the hook, it just happens.
  2. yeah I saw the same thing on a slightly smaller scale but wrote a fourm post about it and jerkbaits, basicially there where two main schools, one on a point with maybe a smaller amount (but much bigger) 40-60, then there was another school on a grass flat with at least 80, but they where smaller. interestingly enough the baitfish the smaller fish where chasing where smaller and the baitfish the bigger fish where chasing where bigger mixed in with some shellcracker and bluegill getting into the brawl. most interesting thing is that it was a one time thing, yknow and the fact that two school around 500 feet apart just go apes at the same time still has me scratching my head. I am not too sure what to think of fishing anymore, sometimes I think I understand how fishing works, then the fish just tell me that "im dreaming pal" lmao.
  3. #1Weather by far, wether it be seasonal, or day to day. #2 light+wind. Both are tied for which one is more important, but overcast and wind usually seems to favor power fishing methods and blue bird skies and sunny days seems to favor slow bottom bouncing methods. #3 Fronts. fronts play a huge role in winter, early-mid spring, and mid to late fall, and can help you catch fish more effectivley. to put simply, during these times of year fish when water is the warmest and right before it drops. #4 thermocline. If you are fishing below the thermocline, you CANNOT catch fish effectivley, its only in effect the summer though, so its lower on my list. #5 moon phase does play a role, and I use it EVERY year DURING and AROUND the pre spawn and spawn, for feeding and mating behaviors, I also use it in fall to target the feeding bass, but other than that I really dont use it much. (although when it comes to crappie thats a whole different ball game, and you will be surprised how many fish you can catch on a full moon at night or early mornings. #5 barometer. To be honest this ties into fronts and while im not much of a scientist, im not going to comment on the barometer and how it effects fish during fronts so all I will say is I dont check the air pressure and check the fronts instead, because they usually corrospond with each other. #6 water clarity. Honestly water clarity plays no role in sucessfully catching fish or not catching any, I dont think of water clarity as a factor that changes how bass bite, I just change methods based on the other conditions and fish lures that do well in clear water, (DS, jerkbait, poppers, finessey stuff, Large swimbaits)
  4. for the most part I walk it, although I do try straight retrieving because I have heard that can be effective through schools of shad, I even burn burn burn real fast without walking and let it sit and sometimes that is killer, I tried alot of different retrieves but could not get them to hit it while moving slow, maybe it was just the day and they wanted it fast, maybe It was the wrong size walking bait, it was the Jr size super spook, maybe they did not like the rattle compared to the silent rapala. Im not quite sure
  5. yeah i noticed that and I even tried that and usually this tip is very helpfull, dont get me wrong its usefull, but when I fish it super slow in 22 feet of water clarity they always just follow it and dont hit it, where as I find they hit really clear small poppers better, I also tried that and got fish but it was not quite as effective as the rapala. Its hard to explain but in a nutshell, I feel like if you dont fish it fast you get too many fish just watching it rather than hitting it, I did get 2 bites fishing it slow but its the lightest tap and it looks like they poked at one of the trebles like a bluegill super light with no agression, to inspect it, and I have never caught one when they do that. now maybe feathered hooks could help in this situation, something to look a little bit more natural and encourage a more posotive bite instead of a super small tap, lighter than a bobber bite panfishing. I think maybe a smaller walking bait that has no rattles could also be a player, you also have to note im using the gen clear see through transparent zara spook, and they still are weary on a low retrieve because my water clarity looks like this, but for bass (scroll below for image of zara spook)
  6. I am a believer now!
  7. So okay, I have chosen this bait that I have never fished with in my life because many people recommended it. It may also surprise you. I think it is my new favorite warm water moving bait! *drumroll please ????* the original fast floating jerkbait! So being in a younger generation of fisherman I have never thrown these, let alone owned them, but I gave em a try. It was a surprisingly cold morning, especially for summer in socal, wind was light but noticeable. The sky was glooming with dark dark clouds, yet was getting pierced by rays of light. All was calm, and than chaos came. Walking down to the bank filled me with euphoria as a school of at least 30 bass where slamming a massive school of shad in a football sized field. I fumble to take my zara spook off the hook holder and fire out, retrieving as fast as I can, blowup after blowup, at least 4-5 blowup after every cast, but they where not committing in the 22 foot clarity. Dead threadfin where seen injured and struggling to stay alive sub surface. I realize after 50 blowups these bass are not wanting something so obnoxious in clear water. I look in my bag and pull out a old floating balsa jerkbait by rapala. I remember asking how many of you fish them, and retrieved accordingly. I fished it fast through the schools of baitfish and got bit every cast, as the baitfish got pushed up to the surface I fished it as a twitch bait and got bit. I was very impressed on how it makes rings similar to how natural baitfish make rings. I was even fishing it 2ft above the grass, sometimes the grass was only 3 inches below the surface but I fished it fast with a high rod tip and got many bites. I fell in love with this bait because it's effectiveness in grassy areas produced large bites and ripping it free from grass got even more. Yes the trebles where annoying at times but it is an action uncomparable to a fluke and you can fish it in wind and control the depth more effectively than a fluke. I loved the side to side roll and the darts put out a flash that made me think it was a real baitfish for a second. So, thankyou for those who taught me how to fish an old-school lure like this, it is now one of my favorites!
  8. 100%, I still do miss bites I bet, i just dont feel them or notice them, I have gotten tremendously better and I feel like a combination of line watching and bottom contact has increased my detection tremendously, even if I was using a fiberglass rod. on slower presentation where im not using the reel alot to move fast (cold water jig fishing/DS) I hold line in my offset hand and if I get bit i know.
  9. that looks delish, absolutley delish!
  10. fishing new fisheries or fisheries i have not known well can be tough, expecially for me. Id say dont beat yourself up on the first 5 trips because you really know nothing about the fish and how they act if its a new lake, or one you dont fish much. took me a year and around 40 trips to finally really dial in my local fishery.
  11. sometimes it can be tough, ive noticed that the patterns I see usually favor low light conditions or early morning/evening fishing, mid day patterns can be slow but do-able, just a little tougher. Im having the same problems as you.
  12. If you are still interested, I'd look at the kastking zephyr, it's 72 with a drag clicker and 69 without, one of the lighter spools on the market as well. If you don't want to schill out that much money the spirit fox or fishband are also fine
  13. probably people keeping their fish in a live well, honestly id rather people keep the fish they catch than keep them in a livewell for 8 hours and then release them, makes the parks cleaner. I have no issue with bass dying but if you are going to release them at least put in the effort and dont keep them out of the water for the whole day of fishing in a livewell ?
  14. Okay yeah that makes sense, I have a few creature tubes I will give it a try! Okay will make sure to check this out!
  15. They do their same behaviors just more to a extreme, easier to catch imo
  16. Sometimes it just happens no matter how fast you set the hook. I just keep em, never really found a technique that prevents it, circle hooks for me are not great because bass can throw them easily and I would rather kill a few bass to not loose as many fish than to loose alot of fish to save a few.
  17. Interesting, yeah I'm also wanting to fish them stupid tubed in cover and grass and give it a try!
  18. Wow, my dad had an old lews just like that and took it out for yellowtail and fried the internals and gears got recked, cool to see a cleaner looking one!
  19. What is the difference between double and single dipped tubes, or is it just a marketing scheme?
  20. Wait even in a private pond? That doesn't seem right because I have em in my friends private pond
  21. I actually wanted a pet baby bluegill when they where spawning up shallow and there where a ton of small ones but didn't have a big enough tank, one interesting thing I saw about bass if for their first 3 weeks they eat only insect larve and insects, no baitfish.
  22. wow I did not know much if any of this! thanks! yeah I had a favorite quantum spinning reel and it was really smooth smoother than some of my newer reels, still is but I think the wear just makes the components sloppier, the reel handle is loose and antireverse isnt what it used to be as well as the bail doesnt close as well as it used to, finally the bearing that sits inside of the line roller is half shot, and that peice of the graphite has flexed so much its really loose and line gets caught in between the roller and the casing on the bail. I retired it but was such a good reel.
  23. One lure I found that is perfectly balanced surprisingly is a trout magnet jerkbait in suspending. They make larger sizes for bass as well and are reasonably priced compared to most suspenders
  24. Yeah I'm only 18 but notice it even now. My senior year flew by, even doing only distance learning ? and compared to when I was younger time is moving faster but a psychologist actually explained it really well by the name of professor Adrian Bejan. The theory is that the older you get the more cognitively aware you are of time passing as you are more experienced with different times of year and their relationship to time itself. (Unless you have a cognitive disability that does not allow you to understand time as thoroughly like an intellectual disabilty). Simply put, the more you "live" the more predictable the future dates will become making them faster in your mind. Heh I guess that psyche 101 in high-school may help somebody after all ???
