  1. Theory. Use what you know, fish the shallow cover for summer bass, hit points and rip rap banks early morning and late evening. Fishing offshore may not be your best bet, but drag a heavy oz lead weight around the bottom for an hour and fish the humps, dropouts, and creek channels. ( or anything else fishy) That's how my grandfather learned lake structure offshore back in the day. Theory can replace technology to a certain extent, not perfect but at least helpful
  2. So yesterday I went out and last 5 minutes of fishing I flipped to some cover and caught a three pounder. Today with 5 minutes left I went to the same price of cover for the hell of it with the exact same lure and color in the exact same place and pulled out a different three pounder. Has this happened to anyone else, and why the hell as they stacked up there lol. Maybe the baitfish really like it because it's got a ton of protection ? maybe it's just one of those things. I have pulled a total of 7 bass from this one piece of shallow structure this year and it's about the size of a small car like a prius. Anyone else had this happen?
  3. Suffix is better than Berkley in my opinion, and izprline is up there with suffix. Suffix is less stretchy than izorline but izorline had a bit less memory. Suffix is a great line and even their original is alright but siege is the best! Yup, I am the same way pretty much although to be fair have lost a few frog fish fishing mono, other than frogging and saltwater fishing for toothy fish, I use mono It all works at the end of the day
  4. I never really grew up with anyone to teach me bass fishing. Of course my dad knew basic rigs to catch panfish like a slip bobber or fishing for trout out on the west coast in lakes with powerboat dough. He even tought me how to fish creeks for trout. I'm not old at all and am 20 but don't really have any friends, probably because I fish to much ?. Nevertheless the person who has taught me the most about bass fishing online is @WRB or Tom. There are tons of others that have helped me out on this website but by far Tom has helped the most. He has taught me many things in the last 6 months to a year just by reading posts he comments on and it bodes true to me because I'm on the west coast in socal and many of his tips work really well here. I would have never known as much about fish positioning and lure choices in Gen clear water if it wasn't for Tom!
  5. Oh for jigs I can understand, just more finisse baits it doesn't look as natural and in clearer water as well. Small 4-6 inch strait tailed worms dropshotted or weightless I feel while they don't get spooked they may not be as keen to biting
  6. That works too using light drag, does the same thing as mono I would suppose. Also to be fair and give braid credit where credit is due, I don't think bass care about the visual of braid when the bait is moving compared to a senko or trig That would be one way I will fish braid! I do that with floating worms and cross with mono leader! Could not agree more that a swivel is stronger than knot to knot connection!
  7. Yeah I hear u, braid has better Hooksett strength but the stretch can help with treble Hooksets too Izorlines my favorite and has barley any memory! The best mono imo for casting. I also u zebco omniflex for handling on a surfboard Amen, today I was frogging a pond and would have probably caught the fish that hit if I had braid but the mono on a med hvy wasn't enough for a Hooksett. Ended up cutting off and following up with a trig same area on same rod and got em Izorlines xxx super copoly is not the line I'm thinking of. Berkly xt and big game lines are more on the stretchy side. Also kastking braid is also kinda stretchy imo Yeah I've never ripped it out of their mouth either but I think I get alot more "short strikes" and a worse bite to catch ratio than floro or mono with treble baits
  8. The yo Zuri super braid is somewhat stretchy to me, not near like jbraid or power pro imo. But less stretchy than mono. Yeah I don't care for yo Zuris braid either, but I soak my mono in cold water for at least 3 weeks and they sit for 8 months, kis u not line comes off almost straight with little or no coils. I have tried it on izorlines coploymer all the way down to zebcos omniflex. It surprisingly all works
  9. I understand, it's not perfect and if you are getting technique specific it's terrible but I think it's the most versatile for beginners as they can throw multiple lures Yup I hear you, I also really like braid in the saltwater but for the most part mono is my favorite for topwater and cranking unless I need to get deeper. I even throw crigs trigd spinnerbaits and alot else on it. 100% I'm not saying braid isn't killer in certain applications, I'm just saying mono is more versatile and is better for a beginner wanting to throw many different lure types
  10. I'm going to get bashed I know I know, but what other line can topwater, crank, flip, pitch, worm, etc etc. Not saying it'd always the best but I know it's the best for doing everything. Floro is a close second but can't topwater, and braid is kinda meh because you have a knot in your line and while it can also do everything, it cannot crank without some stretch, it's also bad around wood. Some monos are even less stretchy than some braids if you explore enough. Not a perfect line, but us humans aren't perfect either, so in theory having perfect gear is pointless without a perfect angler
  11. And alot of those pros lost big fish with a fg knot slipping, and "all applications" would be foolish, you can't crank with straight braid, and it's not good in wood, I would watch some of randy blauket, he is a pro that swears against braid in most circumstances..... Watch some of randy blankets videos, he will change your mind
  12. Go to the beach and hook into god knows what, especially out on the surfboard with a old spinning rod I caught a 10lb stingray and a HUGE Ling that broke me off with its teeth I was using 15lb mono
  13. Sure you should use a backing but personally braid is more of a hassle than it's worth, poor knot tying quality and always hastlijg with leaders, I'd go straight floor, but if you can't afford that a coplomer or mono. Sure braid has its uses for flipping pitching and especially saltwater but it's overrated for most applications. Think about this, do you really wanna tie a fg or Alberto knot every time you break off? And just look at how many pros and normal anglers lost their pb because of braids poor knotting quality
  14. I'm just telling him that if he is getting bit on live bait why change, you missed My premise lmfao ?
  15. It can be difficult, I have caught tons of fish with soft plastics but let me tell you this, nothing competes with a whole dropshotted nightcrawler, or splitshotted, or weightless nightcrawler twitched on bottom. Also live lining shiners and shad is killer although make sure to use light wire hooks, hook style is preference but the lighter the hook the better the fish can swim, I'll even use em on ultralight with 2lb test and size 6 or 8 eagle claw baitholder. Fish can swim easy and a hell of a fight. My fisheries are so pressured it's hard to catch em sometimes on soft plastics but just keep trying, I remember when I first started I wanted to quit but, if you keep trying eventually you will catch one
  16. Patience, you have to weed through the small ones to get the bigger ones, or throw big baits like a bigger worm or something but I usually just grind through it until a bigger one sees my bait
  17. Never really had an equipment fail, although the accasional lazy knot tie lost me a 3lber, but I wash fishing 2lb line lol. Have had some reels give out in antireverse when wrenching in fish from cover but it's has never made me lost that fish, the gears just slipped probably. As for rods I have never broke one or at least not yet.
  18. Will try to mess around with it a little next time I'm on water, thanks!
  19. I don't have a high end one that marks it, it's an older model Okay thankyou Tom, this is great to know thanks ?! I'm using a lake report and yeah it's in Celsius, thanks for this information, and I don't have a high end sonar so it doesn't work Celsius temps in inclines of 10ft going deeper It's in increments of 10ft, I forgot to put that and its in Celsius
  20. So I live in California and one of my lakes is crystal clear with tons of vegetation. I was wondering if my lake doesn't have a thermocline because it doesn't drop super cold at the bottom, it looks something like this 26.4 25.7 25.8 22.4 21.0 25.0 So would this mean the thermocline is at 22.4 to 21 is? Or if so why is it even warmer at the bottom, perhaps there is no thermocline? Just curious thanks!
  21. thanks this provides some good ideas for me!
  22. so I have a few rapala countdowns and I have used them in the past, when trolling for trout but I was curious if the bigger ones have any applications for bass? I thought they could be really good burning through the early morning summer conditions in clearer water 10-20 ft vis, but does anyone do anything else with them, maybe like fishing offshore to catch suspended bass or dredging deeper water in winter? just curious because I havent fished with em in years.
  23. oh what a bummer, I know a guy that does hand tie them, maybe ill buy some from him
  24. I use whatever I have, grass ill fish some worm hook, and open water ill fish a small mosquito hook. I also have been loving the 1/0 owner twist lock for smaller 5inch plastic trick worms, prevents it from sliding but not good on dropshot, only weightless or splitshot r somthing like that
