How does finesse fishing work good?
“reaction bite” and “finesse” are two of the most overused, inconsequential terms in bass fishing

Logic vs. Local
Let me give an example. I fished a private lake recently that I’ve fished quite a bit. I know this lake to be a good topwater lake. I did fish what the conditions “said” I should do. It was sunny and high skies. Hit some docks with summer baits. Fished deep. But I caught fish only on a popper. But wait, logic says that topwaters should be good when the skies are overcast. A little less so when it’s sunny. Why is it the only thing I got bit on? It’s a good topwater lake. I only knew that by fishing it as long as I have.

Logic vs. Local
I saw @Pat Brown hook two fish on a frog and thought “guess I better tie on a topwater.” I put on a popper and got a fish pretty quick 🤷🏻♂️ I was just talking smack about Shearon Harris to somebody the other day saying it ain’t no good anymore. Guess you proved us wrong! lol Local knowledge is better

Your shore/canoe/bass boat rankings
I like to fish big lakes mostly because they are like a giant puzzle to me. But yes, you’ve got to fish a marsh or snarled pond or two if you own a kayak. Been there, done that, and will continue to. What I’m talking about is what you need to do if you are on a big lake. You can’t run main lake point after main lake point after main lake point. You just can’t run that many. So it’s a game of… what do I have available to me? How can I best exploit it? Is there another region of the lake that might be better?

Your shore/canoe/bass boat rankings
Kayak fishing is about taking the area you’ve got and squeezing it for all it’s worth. You may also need to be willing to relaunch. Squeezing an area is what I need to figure out about kayak fishing. You’ve also got to take advantage in any way you can of the fact that you are a lot stealthier than a boat. The problem I think I have with kayak fishing is that I tend to fish out of a kayak like I should be fishing out of a boat.

Your shore/canoe/bass boat rankings
Shore: 7 Kayak: 6 Bass Boat: 3 Although I fish from a kayak the most, I rate myself higher from the shore because bank fishing ain’t too difficult to figure out. @Bluebasser86 reminds me that I have a bunch more to learn from the kayak.

Badin 7/8/2024 solo kayak Water temps ???, wind direction: yes, wind speed 1-5mph, sky conditions: yes Weather conditions were all over the place today and seems to have made for a rough day of fishing. The winds changed in the middle of my trip from South to North. The sky conditions changed from overcast to sunny. I had probably the toughest summer fishing day I’ve had on Badin. I launched twice, trying to see if going to the other end of the lake would help. It didn’t. I experimented a bunch trying to find a good bite. It is tough to know whether I would have done better just sticking with one thing and running with it. I got one tiny bass deep in grass, barely avoiding a skunk. Going to forget about this one 🫥

Quick correction. That fish was on an ol monster t-rigged. I did catch one on the popmax but that was early morning. The last was on a spinnerbait. The spinnerbait fish and popmax fish are shown in my report but not in Pat’s, for anyone looking for them. I know, it’s a lot of photos to keep track of! It’s a pain when we are catching them good!

Pat’s Pond 7/6/2024 Full report pretty well covered in the Latest Catch Pics Thread. Dont care to list conditions since I don’t plan on fishing there unless it’s with Pat. Caught the following: Ol Muddy 7/6/2024 Quick trip to Ol Muddy produced some bass. Partly cloudy, still winds, late evening fishing. Rage tail lobster in Falcon Lake Craw 3/16oz brass n glass t-rig produced 2. Ol Muddy 7/7/2024 9-11am fished Ol Muddy again. Partly cloudy, slightly windy, water clarity 1.5ft or so. Mom boated 2 very nice bass 5.79 and 4.96 and I boated the first topwater fish out of the pond on a Megabass PopMax, wild gill. She was using an ol monster in junebug 3/16oz t-rig brass n glass.

Okay @Pat Brown asked me to take over the report because he’s been very busy since our outing. He has been really gracious to @IcatchDinks, @FishTax, and myself. He’s held no secrets back on where he fishes and how he fishes. Pat is a master of the frog and many other lures! Great guys to hang out with. I had a good time and I hope everyone else has, as well. Unfortunately @FishTax was too busy and could not hang out with us at the time. We fished a small pond together. It’s the same one that you have seen other reports coming from. Really interesting pond. Took me a bit to figure out. But we smashed em! Please correct me if Im wrong. I believe Pat caught 4, I caught 3, @IcatchDinks caught 2, and Pat’s son caught 3. If I’m missing any photos, feel free to add y’all and my mistake. They may take a bit to add into here. Pat also lost a GIANT on a frog that everyone saw him wrenching in. It just somehow got enough wiggle room to get off. I give him a lot of credit for tricking that fish into biting a frog. Thank you @Pat Brown for sharing a little bit of your bass fishing haven and for sending us home with some gifts! He’s a gentleman.

Thank ya. There’s a bit of a story behind them but I went into the store looking for the most obnoxious pair of shades I could find. Think I did a good job 👍🏻

While I wait for Pat Brown to post a report, l would like to put it on record that Pat does not mess around when he has a frog fish on the line. Imagine a 6+lb fish being practically water skiied across the surface like it is a 2lber and you have an idea of what I witnessed 😳

The biggest fish in the lake
Caught a 6.21lb fish out of a very small NY reservoir. I’d never heard of anyone catching a fish larger that during the 2-3 years I fished it and I whole heartedly believe it could have been the biggest during that time. Not a record, but possibly the biggest at that time. Average size there was way below keeper. I’ve caught a bass pushing 7lbs out of Ol Muddy too which is a 2 acre farm pond in NC. I always thought it was the biggest in the pond, but my Mom claims she hooked and lost one bigger recently.

Jordan 7/5/2024 Water temps 87 degrees, winds SSW 5-7mph, partly cloudy, very high water clarity, prefrontal SHW and I boated 8 bass total on our last trip together. He boated 5 and I boated 3. He once again caught all his fish on a shaky head and I caught 3 on a spinnerbait, with one chasing it down in open water while I was burning it back to the boat! Fish were aggressively chasing shad and pushing them up against the bank. There was a small front incoming that activated a bite window which allowed me to boat 3 on a spinnerbait, but once it was over, it was over. We got off the water earlier than our other days because of the heat. Topwater yesterday and a spinnerbait bite today! I am having a good leave! BR crew fishing and ol muddy fishing incoming. Hopefully running into a much larger class of fish soon.

Private Lake 7/4/2024 Water temps??? Winds SW 8-9 mph, mostly sunny, very high water clarity Quick solo kayak adventure to the private lake where I caught my PB. The water was pretty low here. Most activity was shallow and bass were aggressively pursuing sunfish. This is a great topwater lake. Probably one of the best for topwater that I’ve been on. I threw several different baits but a Megabass Popmax in Baby Bass was the ticket. Extra-long, accurate casts from way off the target were key with the high water clarity. The bass would bite shortly after the popper hit water. Caught 4 small bass biggest about 2lbs. Caught nothing deep and nothing off the big dock here. Very surprising. Nice to see that the lake I grew up fishing is doing well.
