rage tail chunk warped/bent
Throw it in the boiling water for about 2 minutes. My rage tail shads wouldn't run right because the tail kept wanting to stay on 1 side. The boiling water corrected that.

Tips on night fishing
Get yourself a flashlight with a red lens. It will allow you to see to change baits, etc. but won't destroy your night vision.

what color
Just wondering why the Yo-Zuri is so inexpensive compared to a lot of other lines like Stren, Trilene, etc. I have never used Yo-Zuri but I am considering giving it a try. I noticed too that the 800 yard spools were 1/2 the price of the 275 yard spools. Is there a difference between those two that I'm missing?

When do you say something?
I only offer help if I'm asked. And never assume that just because they are buying steel leaders and an UL rod that they don't know what they're doing or don't have some reason for doing so. I often walk out of the store with tackle meant for 2 distinctly different species of fish. depends on what I'm looking to acquire or replace. The other day I bought a Mepps #4 orange black and some panfish curly tail grubs. I have my eye on a pike rod and I'm running low on Crappie Nibbles. One day I might decide to stop at Gander Mountain and pick up both.

Ban on Soft Plastic Baits
Careful! We've already banned cutting certain trees because of the little critters that live in them. Better to protect them than to build a house for a human. : When it happens, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Illegal outboard motor use
A local lake near me had a 10 hp limit although it was just recently raised to 20hp. I had boat dealers tell me they would just change the cover or the stickers to circumvent the law. While I disagree with the practice, I can understand some of the reasons. Originally when the lake was filled trees were not removed and stumps were everywhere. Today that is not the case. I think the other reason people violate that law may be due to safety. I've been on that lake when the wind or storms come up and the waves build. 10hp is not enough to get you to shore quickly and safely. A pontoon boat can barely move against the waves and wind. You can have a bigger motor on your boat along with your 9.9 (or now 20) but the prop must be removed and left on shore.

Fishing pliers ?
Do not get the Rapala pliers, at least not the ones that come with the side cutters in a package. First, they are not well made. The jaws don't mesh well and the cutter is not ground evenly. Second, the plastic guards, they look like a hilt on a knife, get in the way. I had a small bass inhale a hook deeply, not gut hooked, and the guards prevented me from getting the pliers into his mouth. The cutters that came with the pliers, useless! Big gap in the cutting edges when closed. Go to Sears.

Sweet Beavers Rock
I remember seeing these things at Gander Mountain. I had a package in my hand the other day but decided to put them back because I already had so much other stuff. Guess I'll have to give them a try. What colors are working for you?

Tackle boxes: soft vs. hard
I have both. I have 2 Plano 2 hip hard boxes and a Gander Mtn. soft. I have the clear flat boxes organized with jerkbaits, spinners, etc. The hard cases carry misc. items, hooks, floats, tools, jigs, etc. plus a few cranks and spinners. I can take the hard box plus any or all of the flat boxes in the soft bag, depending on my needs. Sometimes all I need is just a box of crankbaits. Other times there is enough in the hard box.

What did I do wrong???
If I had realized he wasn't hooked good, I had other opportunities to set the hook when he was closer to me and I didn't have so much line out. Sam, I really don't know where the hook was in his mouth. The drag was not loose when he hit, I simply felt resistance on the line but before I could react, he was out of the water. I certainly didn't want to try to set the hook then. I brought him in quite a ways, keeping pressure on him the whole time. I thought the rod handled him quite well. I wouldn't say that I was deliberately trying to turn him when he got close, just trying to get him in. He just went down, doubled back quickly and came out of the water and he was gone. I don't know that playing him more was a good idea as the longer he was in the water, the more opportunity he had to throw the hook. Oh well, it was fun, and the fish won, this time.

Limewire, but like Bchlr said, if you can't get it to preview play, cancel immed. My antivirus did stop a few trojans but I haven't had any real problems.

What did I do wrong???
Had a very nice fish on yesterday, then I lost him. Here's the set up. Small cove off the main lake. Rod was an Avid, 6'6' Med/Fast. Lure was an Erie Dearie with a Gulp Minnow. This thing will cast a mile which is good because alot of the cove has such a steep bank you can't fish it so you pretty much have to throw from one spot. I cast the bait and I'm just starting to wind in the slack when a fish grabs it and jumps. He starts pulling, so I start winding. Rod about 2 o'clock, drag isn't slipping but its close to. I'm keeping pressure on him all the time and as it gets closer to me the fish goes right and deep, then comes back up, shakes his head and I'm standing there with an empty Dearie wondering what the heck happened. I may not have gotten a good hookset, since he came out of the water right away and I didn't want to double set it. Besides, he was pulling hard all the way back so I figured he was hooked. Where should my rod have been when he turned and went deep? I still had it at about 2 o'clock trying to turn him and get his head up. Did the configuration of the Erie Dearie make it easier for him to throw it, since it has a weight forward design? I like the E.D. since I can reach alot of inaccessible water. I don't often hook into fish that powerful so maybe I didn't fight him right, or maybe it was just one of those things. :-/

MASSIVE Dead Snake
Anybody know what kind of snake it was/is?

Swivels
On C-rigs and lures that can create line twist, ie, inline spinners. Occasionally on a crank or jerkbait that has a split ring on the front. I do not like tying line to a split ring because it can work through the ring and come off.

Anybody Else Do This?
I think about 80% of my tackle has been used at least once. Not all my crank and jerk baits have been used. I have a variety of sizes and colors of those but I don't own a boat and it makes it a little harder to fish those. But I have them for the opportunities when I can go out on a boat. I have some duplicate colors of jigs that haven't seen water yet. All of my rods have seen action. I probably don't have nearly as much stuff as some of you guys so it makes it easier to use it. My response to my wife is to remind her that her nephew (avid golfer) doesn't use just one club for the entire round of golf nor does he use every club in his bag on every round. The right tool for the right job.

bluegill or shy bass???
I generally find a bluegill does a tap-tap-tap whereas a bass is more of a solid pull without the tap.

3:16 New colors for Baby Wake and Wake Jr.
I have no doubt they'll work. You certainly couldn't continue selling baits at that price if they weren't good and didn't produce. I'm sure the price is justified. And I know all about 20 $4.00 baits versus 1 $80.00 bait. But I can't spend that kind of money at one pop on one bait, no matter how much I'd like to. If I lose one of my $4 baits, I still have 19 left. I'd love to have nothing in my box except high quality baits, everyone a proven producer, but for me, it just doesn't work that way.

Very nice article. Reminds me that I, too, need to start throwing them more. And now, I finally know how to pronounce the name.
