  1. When I got back into fishing I purchased a 33 because, "I had used a spincast reel many years ago". I caught some fish with it but quickly found it not well suited for anything of any size. Hard pulls caused the line to bury itself on the spool messing up subsequent casts. It has now been relegated to the position of "use this rod and reel" when young kids come over and want to fish. Not recommended for serious fishing. I know its supposed to be Zebcos top of the line,(or nearly so), but I wasn't all that impressed with it.
  2. I have a number of Storm lures. Never caught anything on them. I'm gonna start throwing them in "dangerous" places, so I can lose them, so I can lighten my load a little.
  3. I actually tie a hangman's noose on my spinnerbaits. The more the spinnerbait pulls, the tighter the knot gets. I've never had one fail. I like a tight knot on a spinnerbait rather than a swivel because the line stays put in the bend. Swivels sometimes tend to slide down the wire and screw up your retrieve. I've caught lots of fish on spinners. I would say that's my go to confidence bait.
  4. But for your $2.00 less per bag, you get fewer baits per bag. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  5. Absolutely. Perspective, particularly with a wide angle lens can make something closer to the camera appear much bigger than it really is.
  6. I don't know if this has been covered here before but I ran across this tip on another fishing site I was passing through. I had the opportunity to try this, 4 times, last night, with my son and his friend as we were fishing in a river that is quite low and has A LOT of trees, rocks and other junk in it. It worked on a jig with me and several hooks with the others as they were fishing for cats. If you get snagged, first off, DON'T keep pulling and bury the hook deeper. Pull out an arms length of line from between the reel and the first guide. Tighten the line by putting pressure on the line by raising the rod way back over your head. When you have some fairly significant pressure from both hands, everything is tight, release the line like a slingshot and release the rod pressure at the same time. The hook or jig should pop free. Once I thought it was still stuck, but a sharp yank proved me wrong. All four times I tried this it worked. I don't know if it would work on more buoyant lures or not, but would be worth a try.
  7. Photographer. Very irregular schedule, plus I'm self employed, which means, I can go fishing just about any time I choose.
  8. I have Cajun Red Cast 14# on a spinning reel and some 12# on a baitcaster. Seems to work well for me. Maybe a little heavier and stiffer than some other line. The 14# is on a NH spinning outfit and I got snagged the other day. I really had a tough time breaking it off.
  9. From where did you order these "Big Ikas"???
  10. I picked up a combo the other day, paired with an Abu Garcia spinning reel. Felt great in my hand, light weight, balanced. I haven't used it yet, I wanted to get some feedback on the rod first.
  11. Does anyone have any opinions/feedback on Fenwick rods? Is the Venture an older model? Where does it fall in their line in terms of quality? Thanks.
  12. I decided to give the Wave worms a try so a couple of weeks ago I bought several packages at Wally World. I caught one bass at my local pond with one and haven't had any other success with them...... until today. I stopped off at the river, for a few minutes, with a minimum of tackle. Because storms were imminent I hadn't planned to stay too long. I was fishing a Tiki stick weightless and just pulling it slowly through the water creating a slim profile and a very nice Northern decided it looked very tasty. After a brief fight and some spectacular tail walks I had him close to the bank but he broke my line. I was ill prepared with wrong rod(line) no net and no pliers. So he's swimming around with a Shad laminate Tiki Stick. I hope some one else gets him and gets the hook out. Minnows under bobbers seem to be the popular bait for bass in our river and apparently pike like that look as well. I will definitely be back with the Tiki stick, trying again.
  13. Went to my local Gander Mtn. yesterday and came out a little poorer or a little richer, depending on how you look at it. They had a lot of combos for sale so I picked up a Fenwick Venture 6'4" M power with an Abu Garcia Cardinal 301 spinning reel. Price was $79.99. I had an Abu spinner in the past and really liked the reel until I broke the handle and I've always wanted to try the Fenwick. I know this isn't exactly top of the line stuff but the whole rig just feels right in my hand. Very lightweight, very balanced. I can't wait to get out and use it. I opted for a slightly shorter rod for work in tighter spaces, since I mostly bank fish. Hope the rig performs like I think it will.
  14. :-? Tackle buying problem? No not me. Well maybe just a little bit. Ya see Doc, it's like this, whenever I go to the store, something always drags me to the fishing department. It's not my fault really, Something just comes over me. There's all these rods and reels and everyone of them wants me to handle it. And then all those walls of lures and all those colors and everything and well you know.....Hey, I only thought about fishing twice last week, once for 3 days and the other time for 4 days. So I keep a BPS catalogue in the bathroom, anything wrong with that? And one in the car, too. But that's all. Oh, there's a Cabelas one in my office, but that's all, I swear. Hey what are you saying, that I'm obsessed? Oh, possessed.
  15. Our Dick's has 'em. Not a lot of choices, but they have some.
  16. Is there a specific technique or trick I might be missing? I try to vary the retrieve, fast, slow, etc, jerk it left right, pause it. Some times I try reeling it straight back. Anyone had any success with the X-raps?
  17. What model, size and pattern Rapalas do you consider to be your best producer? I have numerous lures, in a variety of shapes and sizes, but I've caught very few fish on Rapalas. I know some people swear by them. Maybe I don't know how to fish them or I am fishing them in the wrong places. When I go out, plastics and spinners do the best for me, although I do give the Rapala a try, almost everytime. They just don't seem to produce for me. The array in the tackle shop is absolutely overwhelming. Maybe I've purchased all the wrong ones but when I look at them I try to "think like a fish", ie, what baitfish is in the lake, what sizes, what would I like if I were a bass. Do you guys have any favourites or top producers?
  18. So your pond isn't the only one filled with all that guck? Our local pond is a mess as well and the only, and I mean ONLY thing that works is soft plastic between the bank and the weedline, fished carefully in and out of the pockets. But they aren't big, not like last year. I've trying throwing stuff out beyond the weed line and pulling it carefully back and then hopping it or jerking it over the weeds to avoid the clog. I don't know whether the bass can't get back out to the deep, I imagine they can, or if they are staying in the shallows because there are are ton of bluegill there. But nary a hit in the deeper water.
  19. The bushings v. bearings would appear to be the main difference. Given that, it is probably worth the extra $15 to purchase the C3, since there is a current rebate on the Abu.
  20. With a spinning setup, I find I can cast a spinner a pretty fair distance. ML to M rods with 6 or 8 pound line works for me. I cast 1/2 oz on M or MH rods with 12 or 14# on baitcasters.
  21. Who can tell me anything about the Abu Garcia 5000 that Wal Mart sells for just under $50.00 Is it the same as, similar to, or substantially different from the 4600, or 5500 C3 sold at BPS or Cabelas. For occasional use on heavy equipment, is it satisfactory? Or, am I better off with the C3. It is still listed as being made in Sweden with brass gears, etc. Is this a model made strictly for Wal Mart? Any insight would be appreciated.
  22. This is the kind of story that gets the anti gunners all motivated to make the rest of us law abiding citizens give up our guns. I would say Yearwood is lucky the other guys didn't have guns, attitudes, and were better shots.
  23. Shoot, I just spent $35.00 at Dick's. I checked on line for any coupons first, but didn't find any. Now I gotta go back. :'(
  24. I believe Tom T. Hall finished that up with "and more money" ;D I don't have any rod over $90. And I just recently bought the St Croix, pretty much to see if there is, in fact, any difference or if I just enjoy the rod more. I took the old Ugly Stick down to the river the other day, because I know that chances are good I'll get snagged and lose some lures ( I did, 3 plastics), or worse. My son has some fairly inexpensive pieces of equipment and there are days he outfishes me. I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy a real high end rod or reel. I'd rather have an arsenal of medium priced rods and reels. Part of my enjoyment is figuring out what I want to use.
