If you had 3-4 setups...
For me it would be: Dobyns 702SF 2500 sized reel Dobyns 703C 7 gear ratio Dobyns 704C 7 gear ratio Dobyns 735C 8 gear ratio If I cranked outside of lipless and squarebills, I'd cut the mag heavy for a cranking rod. Some might be better served with a 3 power spinning rod.

Dobyns rod true purpose.
Some top of the line companies rod prices on TW compared to the cost of the HP. 2/24 Daiwa lines are more expensive. 2/15 Shimano lines are more expensive. 3/18 St. Croix lines are more expensive. 2/4 Megabass lines are more expensive. Most Loomis are ever or greater than. Yeah, it's an expensive rod. The expense might not be expensive *to you*, but it's an expensive rod as far as rod prices go. Do what you want, as you did, and flex on those plebs.

Dobyns rod true purpose.
Putting Dobyns in the same sentence as those other brands is an insult. I don't know how Gary Dobyns hurt you but I'm so sorry.

Heaviest Action Spinning Rod You Use For Bass ?
ML

Gold Leader: Which one and why?
I would attach boat to truck with the 30lb and use the 6lb for Ned Rigs.

what do i need to know about keeping bass
Check the laws of your state. Obtain parental permission. Watch BamaBass on YouTube.

How Much $$$ on a Heavy Rod
I wouldn't touch the modern lightning rod. That clear plastic reel seat cracks or explodes on hooksets. It's a joke.

Things To Do During The Freeze
There is nothing wrong with using barbed hooks. Poaching, littering, and otherwise illegal fishing grinds my gears and I'm glad you reported it, but the hooks part bothered me some. So what?

Are deep pools under waterfalls and lowhead dams on creeks/rivers good spots for smallmouth?
A thousand times YES. I bust squarebill crankbaits right through the fast white water on river dams like this and it produces amazingly well.

Co-Angler/ Back seat etiquette
I fished one season as a co-angler. Never again. I was given horrible angles at all times and never had any input. I was courteous and paid for fuel and left the boat cleaner than when I got on it. I took it all on the chin in grace, but I will never again waste my time.

senko hooks ???
4/0 Gammy EWG, sometimes I even use the red version.

The Same Old Same Old
I tend to stick to about 10~ things I really know and that I have a lot of confidence in. From there I customize them to fit the water I fish. Just as an example, I know a lipless crankbait works very well where I fish. I've long figured out that the original Rat-L-Trap in a shad pattern works best. The RLT might be the best "burner" lipless you can buy. It doesn't shimmy on the fall, but that's not something I need out of it. I need something that runs true at high speeds. A shad/white pattern just gets bit in my water. I never rush to try new things. I wait for verifiable evidence that something works, and then I may slowly dip my toes in the water to try it. The way I generally see it though is that I like to catch bass, I know what my bass eat, and there's not much of a point in blowing through cash to try things they may or may not eat when sitting right there next to me is a stockpile of things I know for a fact will work.

What can I do, if anything, to fish the bottom of a mucky pond?
It's 6 acres and I've fished it thoroughly for a long time. Only where there is a very small creek do you not pull up muck. And I mean it's the area of maybe a living room in this spot that isn't muck. I do catch fish there but never from trying the bottom, always something that swims. I caught a 6lber out of here last summer here in the north. It's a quality pond that can give you some crazy numbers. Bass do well despite scientific theory. No need for a bobber. I'm admittedly an elitist and only use artificial baits. The float and fly is an option, but again no need as the bass are aggressive and do bite anything that moves or slow sinks. It's just that with my schedule this place makes up most of my fishing and I really love jigs and big ol worms on a Texas rigs, but this place seems to take that option from me.

What can I do, if anything, to fish the bottom of a mucky pond?
My primary pond has a muddy, mossy, dead leaves, unidentifiable nasty sludge bottom. I do well here fishing weightless, slow sinking plastics, mid depth moving baits, and top water baits. One of my favorite ways to fish is a jig and craw, but outside of pitching to a spot, they're impossible to fish; the same with Texas rigs. I've tried split shots and Carolina rigs, as well, with the theory being that the nastiness stays off the bait and instead clumps up at the weight further up the line, but no luck. Is there anything I can do that I'm not thinking of that can allow me to fish the bottom with some weight behind it? Dead sticking and twitching weightless plastic once it sinks is an option but that's not really what I'm asking.

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
My fiance is going to butcher me, but I got an itch to do some resupplying. 8 Rat-L-Traps 4 Baby Bull Shads 6 Jackhammers 12 Dark Sleepers 2 Whopper Ploppers 2 Spooks 6 Packs of Zakos 6 Packs of Senkos 8 Packs of Finesse TRDs And terminal tackle. The fallout probably wouldn't be so bad if I didn't just get 3 of the Lew's KVD reels... And of course some Dobyns rods to attach them to.

Baitcaster vs Spinning Reel
I prefer BC over spinning for everything but ultra finesse, such as the Ned Rig; and truthfully, if I had to money to dive into BFS, I would and I would never look back. Spinning has no use for me other than ML.

Recommendations for a less expensive swimbait for my underspin?
Rage swimmers are pretty cheap

Why bass fishermen make the worst weathermen
We'll see who isn't blind come June.

Anyone have the Lew's KVD reels yet?
They have arrived. Buttery smooth out of the box. The spinning reel feels good, but being that I'm in the North, on the water testing has to wait.

Are big pros really using budget gear?
I read awhile ago that a great many do not use expensive gear. That's all relative to the person though. $200 rods and reels are normal to many of us, expensive for others, and yet cheap for others. I really don't think it's common to find $1500 setups on pro decks. They use and beat up their name/sponsored gear and get it replaced for free.

Why bass fishermen make the worst weathermen
I follow several YouTube anglers, mostly tuning in during winter. Almost all of them talk about late fall when it's Christmas time and how early spring is upon us in January. It always cracks me up. Admitting that it's winter and the fishing won't be comfortable, productive, or practical (with some exceptions based on location) isn't something many of them are willing to do. It's buying season for me.

Why bass fishermen make the worst weathermen
December: *late fall* January: *early spring* We can still catch fish because it definitely isn't winter.

Mono Users: Green, Camo, or Clear?
Usually Big Game in green. I primarily fish two kinds of waters. Dirty where color doesn't much matter, or clear with a lot of weeds. I'm convinced that in clear weedy waters the green just looks like a strand of vegetation.

A popular bass rod power/type that you personally don't find a use for?
I don't count MH spinning rods as being popular bass choices. You won't find them on many decks or in the arsenal of very many bank anglers who have to limit their setups. I view them as more of a tool for the "limited", for lack of a better word: meaning for people who don't want to or haven't been able to learn some or even all baitcasting techniques. With that said, to each their own and add anything you want to this thread or to the conversation.
