  1. You're going to get wake there for sure. I bank fish Haddam Meadows all the time and when the weather is nice boats rip through there. If you get on the water early it's nothing but fishermen and you'd be fine. Watch out for drift wood though. Ive seen plenty of full size trees headed to the sound. Never seen a boat hit one but something to be mindful of.
  2. I have a couple jerkbaits that I bought and I never fish them even during what is supposed to be "prime" time for throwing them. Is there any specific rod/reel/line setup to maximize casting distance on such a light lure? I only bank fish so finding deep water is sometimes a challenge for me from the bank. I've tried on my medium fast action 6'6" in rod and the lure doesn't travel very far. I tossed it once on my baitcaster and bird nested so bad I never tried again. Still trying to perfect my thumbing technique on a baitcaster so I tend to keep the brakes on relatively high to assist me. I'm in the market for a few new rods anyway so any advice is greatly appreciated.
  3. Gas station coffee with a little bit of Italian or Irish sweet cream. I typically grab a Cumberland Farms coffee most mornings. 99 cents can't go wrong there.
  4. This very topic is what brought me here to learn about fishing. Our ponds and lakes are starting to freeze but the Connecticut River is still moving. Most places I've ventured to learn about "winter" fishing always shows advice for Texas or Florida which just doesn't hold true here in New England.
  5. I use green or clear. I honestly don't think it matters. Pretty much whatever is on sale. I just spooled my spinning rod with mono in clear simply because I had it and was bored today. Ive had success on both colored lines in all different scenarios.
  6. Not sure, I haven't been up there since September. I don't think it's been cold enough to freeze. I live in Connecticut and our rivers aren't frozen, at least the few I live next to.
  7. Welcome, If you're in the Albany area I do know there is a couple spots on the Mohawk River in Crescent right next to the Crescent Bridge on route 9(Loudon rd.). My company has a plant in Cohoes that I sometimes cover and I wish I could bring a pole with me when I stay up there and get an hour to fish that spot.
  8. For me I'd have to say Walleye. There is a few places around the area I like to fish but there is very limited if any bank access at all to get to them. I pass a lake on the way to my favorite reservoir that I know for a fact has Walleye. But the only bank access is the small boat launch which I hate fishing them because I don't want to be in anyone's way, and then there is maybe 2 or 3 spots along the road that are usually taken up or you need to be a town resident to park or have access to the shore. This year I intend to get the special license to fish a watershed area that I believe has walleye and also has first come first serve canoes free to the folks who buy the pass.
  9. Welcome from another Connecticut angler.
  10. On a good day its "fish on" on a bad day its "*expletives* finally". When I'm with my wife it's a lot more of just laughing because Ill crank out a bunch of fish out of nowhere and I know she gets mad and starts organizing the tackle lol.
  11. I always make a real attempt to get my lures back. Sometime as a bank fisher, I ultimately end up losing snagged baits under the water but try to make sure I collect as much line as I possibly can. My wife and I clean up other peoples garbage too. We've found many baits over the years that were stuck. And being taller I can usually get stuff from tree branches. Connecticut had a huge drought this year and one of the reservoirs near our house was so shallow we ended up walking many of the spots we liked to fish and found so many different baits and lures. We have 2 go to lakes that many city people tend to drive out to in the summer and trash it every weekend so we clean up what we can when the fish aren't biting.
  12. I believe I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. I used to have to go to a day summer camp with my younger brother. The park had a small pond that some guys would fish every now and again. One day we found some tangled fishing line around a branch and there was always hooks on the bank. Well one day we untangled the probably 9 or 10 feet of line and tied one of the dirty rusted hooks on from the mud. We would use the bread from our lunch sandwiches as bait and catch sunnies all day. We hid our line and hook in a storm drain tied to a pole so it wouldn't wash away. We fished that line for a good 2 weeks until the camp counselors noticed us fishing and took it away because of the hook. So for 2 summers in a row we would always search for line and hooks along the bank and instead of swimming up at the pool on the other side of the park, we'd sneak in some fishing in the afternoons before the bus came to take us home while everyone was swimming which requires the counselors supervision.
  13. A&M got robbed big time. Ohio State has no business in the top 4 barely beating Indiana and Northwestern... As a South Carolina fan my only highlights of the year was watching Harris run the ball and finally ousting freaken Muschamp. The Group of 5 teams were honestly more fun to watch this year. Teams like Coastal, App state, Georgia Southern, Cincinnati etc had more exciting games. The top 4 was strictly a money move again. No question that Alabama is probably the best team this year without question, but Clemson losing losing to Notre Dame without Lawrence proves Lawrence is the difference maker. Hats off to the backup(no clue how to spell his name), he played a hell of a game. If USC beat Oregon the committee by default of their own words regarding Ohio State would have had to include them too. I wish they'd just expand the playoffs to 8 teams. Things will get a little less grey. All complaining aside I was just grateful we had some football to watch this ear with this covid garbage. Ok SEC fans you can gang up on me for liking South Carolina now lol
  14. Should be fine. My wife landed this chunk on a very similar setup a couple months ago.
  15. So our weather and waters should be fairly similar then. I'll have to look into those lures. I usually fish in the southern half of Connecticut. I've tried a few lakes up towards the MA border but we have "Community" ponds near here that stock trout. Connecticut has some strict laws on certain portions of the Farmington and Housatonic Rivers. Fly rods only, non barb hooks etc etc. Figured I'd practice some of the stocked ponds to dial in a new set up once I can purchase a light rod.
  16. Thanks for the tips. I've maybe caught a handful of trout on dough bait. My best success was on a daredevle that I some how acquired before I even knew what to toss haha. Guess I need to head out and check out some finesse set ups.
  17. Is it worth investing in any kind of dough bait if most of the ponds around my area are stocked with Trout? I've had minimal success in trout fishing and I'm looking to begin to actually attempt trout fishing in the colder months here in Connecticut. I think most of the trout in our state are stocked including the rivers, and have some crazy regulations, heck we even have to pay an additional 5$ for a "Trout and Salmon" stamp on our licenses in order to fish "target" them. Any suggestions on whether light tackle or fly rods would be better suited as a beginner in this fishing craft?
  18. I've only recently signed up and have lurked here before. Just reading through old posts has gave me some answers to head scratchers I've had that have been plaguing me as novice fishermen. To anyone on the fence about joining a large forum like this, I'd highly recommend it.
  19. I wait until after Christmas when all the fishing gifts have come in then go to town on my stuff 2 or 3 times before open season.
  20. How is Duluth? The closest one to me is about an hour away and I have yet to buy anything from them.
  21. 1. Go to a lot more bodies of water than my go to spots. In Connecticut you can get a special permit to fish some water sheds that I think is only 20$ for 2 years and includes a free pass for a family or friend. 2. Get out of my comfort zone more frequently. I tend to throw poppers or spooks in the morning and usually soft baits any other time. So I need to focus on throwing more cranks, jigs and swim baits. 3. Get out more. This year was tough with work and I didn't get out much during week days when in previous years I'd rush to the water after I clocked out. 4. My biggest goal for next year is to land a bass on a freaken frog! I have had blow ups and misses and I have never landed one. My only hook up can in some super thick vegetation and the line snapped.
  22. Lol, I get it man, I'm also thinner too. Sizing up adds length and width. Its definitely a pain to find "normal" fitting things. I have a Carhartt store near me that actually sells some limited fishing stuff but hard to find the right size. Flipping and casting from the bank into those tight spots also becomes a challenge to overcome with the extra arm length. But I'm sure you've hung your fair share of lures around the tree cover sticking out over the water too lol.
  23. Does anybody know where I can find fishing gear and shirts for taller people? I am 6'6" with a long torso, so I have to find items that come specifically in size XLT(thank god for Carhartt). Pants and Boots/Shoes aren't a problem its usually t-shirts, hoodies, jackets I have a hard time find. BassPros Redhead brand sells a few items but I am looking more specifically for the underarmour type material. I've reached out to companies in the past willing to pay extra for custom made stuff in my size but have been turned down every time. Anybody else have this problem? At least I enjoy the one sport where funky colors fit in lol, because that's what most stores carry in my size for some reason. Ive been trying to seek out fishing brands that carry my size with zero luck.
  24. Hey everybody. New to the message board from Central Connecticut. I've been bass fishing for about 3 years now. I don't own a boat so obviously I bank fish(for now). I've learned quite a bit from researching YouTube, fishing articles and talking to other locals I come across. A few topics brought me here, mainly tips for winter bass fishing and to see about some new spots I can fish. Unfortunately this state is so built up many of the big lakes offer minimal shore fishing because of private property. If any Connecticut anglers want to meet up in the area I'd be willing. My wife and I are weekend warriors and if I get out of work with any daylight left I typically hit a local pond or 2.
