  1. So you wouldn't like my 3.8:1 reel then? With good line, I can uproot trees with it! It is a Quantum from years ago. I use it for the biggest and deepest diving crankbaits. It really saves the wrist if you do much cranking those big boys. The only complaint I have on it is that it does not have constant anti-reverse. It predates that being common in reels. I am fine with 5.2:1, especially for flipping as there is not much line out to reel in anyway. I agree about the older reels. Many of them just had cool looking designs and nothing else looked like them, made them easy to ID from yards away. Like cars these days, many reels are also so similar looking that it can be hard to tell one from the other. I love my old Shimano Bantam 100's! The BB1 from Lew's/Shimano is also a legendary reel!
  2. Bummer! Thanks for checking. What about Shimano rods?
  3. ?Tackle warehouse has a 20% off everything for black friday? If so, I will wait on ordering the St. Croix Legend Xtreme rod I was planning to get this week.
  4. this is a tough choice. Being small and lightweight, with a flipping switch also, it would be a great pitching and flipping reel I think. I think I will put it on my pitching/flipping rod and give it a quick trial run.
  5. I got an imx pro spinnerbait rod this past spring. I usually prefer carbon fiber type handles,, but this cork handled rod is awesome for spinnerbaits! Soft tip with a strong spine. Very sensitive. Overall just a pleasure to use. I like it over my Kistler Helium for sure.
  6. Nice! I just got an Aldebaran BFS newer model reel. 23 model I think, It is amazing. Worth every cent as far as ease of use and smoothness. I probably could have gotten a 40$ spinning reel to do the same, but it would not be nearly as much fun to use. Plus, I am not a fan of spinning/twisting reels at all. Way to many wind knots and twisted/coiled line. I hope to get a conquest bfs reel in the next year. They look awesome and reports of them are wonderful mostly.
  7. I am curious about the centrifugal brake systems needs. Should I clean completely the drum and the weight/pin, removing all traces of oil and dirt? Or is there suppose to be oil on these parts? I normally clean them and run them dry. What does Shimano recommend? All my reels are Shimano. Thanks for your input.
  8. I have always switched hands to reel. I am right handed. I grew up fishing this way, it just feels right. But, I did recently buy a left handed reel to try out on my worm rod, keeping my strong side in control of the rod is my thinking. It still feels weird to me but I am getting a bit better with it. I will give it a year, then decide to keep it or go back to a right handed reel. Honestly, I hope it works out, at least for my worm rods and similar.
  9. I have an old PR1 5Bi Procaster in good condition, I just havent used it in years. What reputation did these reels have? I am mainly wondering if it is worth it to put new bearings, drag disc, and a new gear set into this reel. That will cost me around 40-50 bucks to rebuild it to like new condition. The appearance of this reel is very good. It was taken care of. If you had one of these, let me know your thoughts on the reel please. Thanks for any info you can give.
  10. A few months ago I couldnt decide between 2 models of their Silver widow rods for my new texas rig worm rod. I got a call quickly, I forgot the man's name "sorry", but he was extremely knowledgeable and described exactly the difference between the 2 rods to me. He was very friendly, in no hurry at all, and just a pleasure to chat with. He then reassured me that if I got the rod but didnt like it and wanted to swap it out for the other model that that was no problem at all. I love the rod I chose so much that I also purchased the other of the 2. Those rods were in stock, so the wait was not bad at all, about 10 days.... they were very busy with all the springtime orders at that time. I do plan to get a few more rods from Edge.
  11. what does boiling mono do, or why do it?
  12. Creme. 6'' and 8'' scoundrel and devil's tongues are 2 of my favorite and reliable soft plastics
  13. tatsu is my preferred, followed by sniper fc
  14. where can some of these better stainless bearings be purchased?
  15. I am in Northport, in Tuscaloosa county. What is the name of your business and location?
  16. its a custom rod, so request exactly what you want and will pay for.
  17. I too have some very old, 20 plus years old, rods that I have used hard and abused occasionally. They keep on fishing and taking the wear like a champ without breaking or losing an eye or insert. The only insert problems I have had are from newer rods, usually high end. All I can figure is the epoxy or glue back then was much better. Maybe the EPA forced a change in the ingredients? No idea. My oldest I still fish is an old Berkley lightning rod. around 25 years old or so, never an issue, but I do hate the eva foam handle.
  18. I usually do pretty good casting and not having real bad backlashes, but if I am tired or distracted and not paying attention, the spool will surly let me know. I recall having to teach myself to cast a baitcaster when I was 10 or 11. An abu garcia ambassador Lite, my first real reel. The first couple days were rough. Many re-spools, many cuss words and lots of line cutting. Eventually, I got good enough with it to have fun fishing again. That took about a week. Thank God I am much better at casting now. I am also much better at picking out backlashes when they do happen.
  19. I just got 2 jars of u40 in the other day. I have never treated any of my cork rods in the past, but I will soon. It is time to clean my rods and reels, so I figured I would seal them too after a good clean this time. I plan to just try it out on one rod first to make sure I dont hate it. I like cork much better than the foam handles, but if there is a choice, I go with carbon fiber or composite handles. With carbon handles, soap and water is all thats needed, plus they feel so much better to me and are usually more sensitive.
  20. Hitena Silky 16 carrier or Gosen 16. Pricey, but they are so slick and a pleasure to fish with. I have 2 reels with Gosen 16. I have a spool of Hitena braid but havent tried it yet but in the hand its tough to tell it is a braid. It feels like mono. It is very thin too
  21. I see hybrid and ceramic bearings talked about, and sold in many places. What I want to know is who makes the best stainless steel bearings, either factory or aftermarket. Not looking for cheapest, but the best. Thanks for any info or opinions you can share
  22. I love the one I have with the Bantam 100 on it. Awesome combo! I scored mine for around 175 with a bantam 100 on it. Both are in excellent condition. The bantam on this rod was a NOS reel my grandfather gave me few years ago. He had it stored away many years. I put an Avail lightweight spool in it, carbon drag washers, and better ss spool bearings. This is a fun to use combo!
  23. The 5 Edge rods I have are great. Extremely sensitive, good looking, feel great in hand. The service I got was good, no complaints here with service. I did have to wait about 2 months for one of the rods, but I was told that up front. The others all came within 2 weeks. Their service may have been poor in the past but my recent experience was good. I looked at GLoomis nrx+ and a couple others. I did not like them and thought they were over priced for what they are. I did find a GLX pro spinnerbait rod I liked alot and purchased, but the rest of gloomis rods left me unimpressed, especially at those prices.
  24. I have a 5'6'' hvy fast pistol grip Fenwick I throw spinnerbaits and buzzbaits on when around lots of limbs and overhanging stuff. I wish there were still some good pistol grip rods on the market. All I ever see anymore are cheap imports. Getting a nice vintage rod from ebay is always an option too. Lots of wonderful top shelf pistol grip rods were made several years ago.
