  1. I wonder how many times it turns fish away vs enticing them. I use powerworms and powergrubs, and I don't have any trouble getting bit with them. I also use non scented worms and get bit equally as well. I'll have to experiment with it some, fish a regular worm until the bite is dead, then fish a powerworm and see if I can get a few more. Then reverse it next time or in a different spot.
  2. Ha, I don't do true finesse stuff, just finessey.
  3. Thanks, good to know that fluoro runs smaller for the same test rating. I'm thinking fluoro will give me an edge at a heavy pressure spot I know. But, we'll see. I probably won't do anything until next year and test it during the spring.
  4. Thanks everyone for helping me figure it out.
  5. Thanks for the replies. The Big Bite Baits round heads are $2 for 10, whereas ned heads are $1 each about. I always have the BBB heads on hand, so it'd be an easy enough experiment to flatten a head to try. I happen to have a full range of tools already for my other hobbies and work.
  6. So everyone is tying solid to a ned rig and not using a loop knot. Thanks all.
  7. Okay, which type of knots would be appropriate for mono, fluoro, and braid, when using a ned head for stick bait type ned rig?
  8. I wasn't aware of that knot, thanks. I use a loop knot for flukes, jigheads and crankbaits that either don't have a split ring or where I remove the split ring. I find a loop knot makes the action on a rattle trap better.
  9. I always use a loop knot when rigging a curlytail grub on a round head. Should I use a loop knot for the neds as well? Or is it desirable to tie a firm knot to ned heads, and if so, why?
  10. What is the difference between a ned rig head, and a round ball head for a curly tail grub? The only difference I see is that a ned head normally has a flat nose section. Heck I could take my belt sander and just and a flat on a some round heads and make much cheaper than buying ned heads if that's the only difference.
  11. I have a bottle of this powerbait attractant. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/search-tackle.html?start=0&count=20&prevsearch=berkley+powerbait&searchtext=berkley+powerbait+attractant Should I squirt some into my bags of soft plastics? And if so, how much? Or should I dab a bit on before using the individual plastics? What gives better results? I tried squirting some into a ziplock bag and putting a few plastics in it, zoom plastics, and it seems that it caused some degradation. They looked the same as if they had been under water a while, sort of muddled in the details. I used them and didn't think they caught fish any better than normal. I seemed to think that perhaps a minor amount would work better than a lot, since bass have a great sense of smell. What about using this attractant on jigs? Beneficial or not? All thoughts welcome.
  12. Interesting discussion. If I'm fishing and they are biting, I might stop using something that is working, in favor to use something I have less confidence in. For example, if they are hitting crankbaits, I'm likely to try another type or color, or I might try a bladed jig or spinnerbait. Or if they are hitting a texas rig, I might throw a jig. Or I might try a different kind of worm. I might also change directions and try something completely different, in an effort to understand what they want and why on that day. Now... I say this with some reservation, because I don't always change things up when somethings working. It all depends on what I'm learning, and if I think a change will help me to learn something. My goal is not simply to catch bass... my goal is to learn to catch bass. I want to be able to go to any lake, any pond, any time of year, and catch bass.
  13. Pretty awesome. I haven't given any time to the shaky head yet. I need to. I think I have 2 or 3 shaky head hooks. I just recently started learning jig fishing, and I have quickly gained confidence in it. Jigs is very fun to fish, though I never thought they would be.
  14. I've never used fluoro, but I'm thinking about giving it a try for my mainline. I normally fish mono in the 8lb-12lb range. So, if I am using 12lb mono for my application, do I just choose the same pound weight fluoro line? Is there any problem with using fluoro on a mono backer? I use a backer even for mono.
  15. I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I have a BPS Crankin' Stick in heavy fast. I use it for various things, carolina rigs, crankbaits, river fishing. I haven't tried a MH rod yet.
  16. What is the difference between the PQ2 and the new PQ? I know that there was some older PQ reels because I searched ebay and saw them. It appears they are discontinued with the only version avaibale is left handed. Pro Qualifier 2 https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-pro-qualifier-2-baitcast-reel Pro Qualifier https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-pro-qualifier-light-baitcast-reel So my current reels are PQ2, and I'm wanting a more premium reel, but I might just be happy enough with the PQ. And I'd sure be happier to buy more lures with the difference in cost between the Platiumum or Signature reels vs the PQ.
  17. Interesting discussion, as I've been looking for a new reel. I've mostly been looking at Bass Pro stuff because I love my Pro Qualifier 2 reels.
  18. I am considering picking up a Pro Qualifier reel. How does the PQ hold up to lots of use, or pro level use? Now I ain't fishing the same amount as a pro, but I do fish nearly daily during warm weather. I'll probably average 2.5 hours each trip. https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-pro-qualifier-light-baitcast-reel

The jigheads I've been using have a 1/0 hook. I wouldn't mind going up to a 2/0. I think 3/0 may be too large for my application. I've not caught huge bass on them, I think the largest was 3 pounds, in current. I know not to horse them too. Today at the river I hooked into a carp, probably about 12 pounds, and I was horsing it just to see. It bent the hook and he come unbuttoned when he was right at shore. Course, I don't horse bass, but I knew this wasn't and I wanted to experiment a little. Since I was using the BBB jig heads.
  20. Plus another walleye that didn't get the camera or the stringer.
  21. Thanks Glenn. The first video was great, explained some things I was confused about. I'll watch the second video shortly.

Thanks Joe. I've not tried very many of the BPS baits and lures. I bought a squarebill crankbait when I was at Cabelas last year and it was "okay" but I prefer H20X. I also got a pack of hellgrammites, and liked them just fine.

I've been using Big Bite Baits 1/4oz jig heads for my 3" Fat Albert Grubs, and 1/8oz for my 2" grubs. If I snag them, the hook straightens out, and I can bend it back. Not an issue... and I've not had any issues with fish coming unbuttoned. I don't really have any complaints with these. They aren't the sharpest hooks I ever saw out of the pack, but they do work. https://www.bigbitebaits.com/product/big-bite-jig-double-eye/ I've been eyeing Bass Pro's jig heads both painted and unpainted. Anyone have experience good or bad with these? Anyone used both and can compare? https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-painted-round-jighead https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-unpainted-round-jighead-101434734 What's everyone's favorite jig heads? If you say "Gamakatsu", please say why you think so based on your comparison to an unfavorable jig head. I guess in my mind, if you start out with Gammys, then how can you say they are the best without trying other brands?

I've been happy enough with the 3" Zoom Fat Albert grubs. I also have been happy with the 2" Powergrubs. I haven't had the chance to see or pick up the 3" Powergrubs yet. How comparable are they? One better or worse than the other for anything? Are there any grubs in the same size range I should consider?
  25. That makes sense. I guess I do tend to get that confused.
