Lead Jig Heads

I've been using Big Bite Baits 1/4oz jig heads for my 3" Fat Albert Grubs, and 1/8oz for my 2" grubs. If I snag them, the hook straightens out, and I can bend it back. Not an issue... and I've not had any issues with fish coming unbuttoned. I don't really have any complaints with these. They aren't the sharpest hooks I ever saw out of the pack, but they do work.

I've been eyeing Bass Pro's jig heads both painted and unpainted. Anyone have experience good or bad with these? Anyone used both and can compare?

What's everyone's favorite jig heads?

If you say "Gamakatsu", please say why you think so based on your comparison to an unfavorable jig head. I guess in my mind, if you start out with Gammys, then how can you say they are the best without trying other brands?

A jig is simple a head molded into a hook. What makes a jig better is the hook.

If you use a jig with weak wire hook it can’t be sharpened really sharp because the metal is too soft to be sharp.  Owner and Gamakatsu make very strong light wire hooks that are extremely sharp because the metal used is heat treated hard to hold a sharp point that can be resharpened using diamond hook hone.

If a hook bends open it will bend open again with less force because the metal is weakened.
Cheap jigs use poor quality hooks.

I make my own and use a variety of hooks, Gamakatsu, Mustad, VMC, Victory, and Eagle Claw.  All of them work for me.  I have noted that Mustad has gone down some in quality and Eagle Claw has greatly improved lately.

i have looked at those BPS jig heads many times but the hook size is on 1/4 and 3/8 is a little on the small size for me. i normall like at least a 3/0 hook. like mentioned above, its cheaper for a reason. light wire hooks when bent will just bend again. just yesterday i hooked a 10 lb catfish on a swimbait, fought it for about 10 minutes, about 5 cast later the hook broke off in the bend from the stress of the fight i guess.

I have and use both of those heads, primarily for crappie but I have no problems throwing them to bass when I need the weights I have them in (1/16 and 1/32).  I think you’ll find them similar you what you’re using- generic hook of average quality that is more than enough for bass to 4 lb.

I tend to steer clear of most of the bps baits. Not the plastics. But jigs, hard baits, spinner  baits. I buy the best I can with in reason. Buy once cry once. And try not to lose them. Quality hooks are important.

Thanks Joe. I've not tried very many of the BPS baits and lures. I bought a squarebill crankbait when I was at Cabelas last year and it was "okay" but I prefer H20X. I also got a pack of hellgrammites, and liked them just fine.

I like @Siebert Outdoors. Forum sponsor. I catch many fish on his stuff and have never had a failure.

For ultra cheap, I use strike king stuff on sale. Probably totally mental but I don't like it as much, just doesn't seem to get bit as much.

Where are you fishing and what size fish do you generally catch? As Wrb said, the hook is the deal. If you're pulling them out of thick pads, or heavy wood, etc, you need a different jig than fishing open water. I like the heavy grass jigs for certain things, the sniper finesse jigs for some things, and in ponds with no wood and generally open I like the mini swim jig with a split tail trailer and a slow Alabama shake. 😉

Good luck! Jig orders can stack up fast if you fish many different bodies of water. I have a totally different set for my lake and my favorite pond.

I like the Gamakatsu Horizon Head LG and regular version for the OP is using. I have tried several different ones.

My favorite overall for small paddle tail swimbaits is the Keitech Mono Guard Jig head.  It bends and the bait holder eventually gives out but it brings in the fish and it does something with the guard to make the bait roll just enough.

IMO you can't beat these but you get what you pay for. Caught some absolute giants on these and never a problem with the hook.

The BBB and BPS heads are probably very close to the same heads, maybe even made in the same factory.  They both use the lower grade bronze wire and singler vertical lead barb.  Those hooks are fine so long as youre fishing for panfish or smaller bass.  Just trying to move a bigger bas would open those hooks a bit.  ACC makes some nice heads.  The hook is Mustad instead of Eagle Claw and they have big holographic eyes.

It all depends what I'm doing with it.  If Zman were to offer all their jigheads in 90* eyes I would say that I could get by with just them.  That swimbait eye head is a great inshore head if youre fishing on the beach or level with the water and the TT lures darter heads are great as well, but they use Mustads instead of VMC.  Mustad must be Norwegian for dull.  The points are serviceable brand new, but a few incidental contacts with shells or rocks and they lose their bite real fast.

If I had to pick one head for bigger baits it would be Outkasts Goldeneye head.  Its very similar to Picassos smart mouth, which is outstanding it its own right.  Both heads have big eyes, use outstanding Gami hooks, but Outkast head has horizontal lead barbs and a wire keeper on the bottom, which makes them great for any kind material.  The 90* eyes gives you outstanding depth control allows the bait to look natural.  he head design is effective on the bottom as well as for swimming.

For strolling tiny baits, I love Hayabusas Beat Roller.  It was on the market years before FFS came onto the scene, so its kind of an OG.  It uses a tapered aspirin head and weighted collar to achieve the action.  The hook is a #2 limerick bend, which makes the hook very strong for its size.  I really like that Hayabusa doesnt require you to sell an organ on the black market to buy a good amount of them.

For neds smaller baits one of my favorites is Berkleys Half Head.  Its a perfect head for swimming or dragging anything that will fit a on a #1 hook.  It uses a fusion hook which are very sharp.  The only negative is that the wire is stiff.  They will bend, but if you starighten one that was bend pretty good, its likely to break under a good load.  The best part is the price, they were 3.50 per 5 when i fist started using them and now are closer $5, but its till better than $3 per head which some companies charge.  Berkley has other great heads too.  The new hybrid head is really nice, but if they were to offer them with a 2x hook they would be one of the most versatile heds on the market.  The swimbait heds are great too if you want a 60* eye.

A newer head to me that Ive been using for inshore and bucktail tying is the Bladerunner Inhaler head.  They come with a rather stout hook, a hybrid mushroom/ball head with an effective lead barb keeper.  I dont know what kind of hook they use, but its better than any Mustad I've used, as the point holds up very well.  It has a 90* eye that sits slightly forward its COG, but once you put a bait on it, it stays horizontal very well with a proper loop knot.  I like to glue big eyes on them for gulp and bucktails.

The jigheads I've been using have a 1/0 hook. I wouldn't mind going up to a 2/0. I think 3/0 may be too large for my application.

I've not caught huge bass on them, I think the largest was 3 pounds, in current. I know not to horse them too.

Today at the river I hooked into a carp, probably about 12 pounds, and I was horsing it just to see. It bent the hook and he come unbuttoned when he was right at shore. Course, I don't horse bass, but I knew this wasn't and I wanted to experiment a little. Since I was using the BBB jig heads.

The other day I had been in need of more 1/4oz jigheads, and the Big Bite Baits jig heads were out of stock at the local Academy.

They had some Eagle Claw unpainted jigheads that looked okay so I picked up a pack. They have 1 size larger hook, but the hooks bend out easier. I've caught a few fish on them, nothing large.

Check out Team Davies jigheads - small company, good quality stuff.
