  1. I found this to be pretty interesting so I reckoned I'd share.
  2. Thanks, I'll have to check out the gill plates on the next one. I have been very careful with all the ones I've caught thus far.
  3. Why would one choose a heavy vs M/H rod? What applications benefit from a heavy action? What techniques are impeded?
  4. I have been blessed to have been given one of these - https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-utility-binder and it dawned on me... I'm not sure if you're supposed to leave the soft plastics in their original packaging or if you're supposed to remove them when putting them in the clear binder pockets. Obviously you can do either, but is there a benefit to one way or the other? Tips and tricks for these things are appreciated as well. I haven't started using this yet, but I'm going to incorporate it into my fishing as I like it quite a bit.
  5. Fished a local pond/watershed a few hours this morning. I also got a pumpkinseed on the curlytail grub, but no picture. A friend that fished with me got a 2lb bass on a popper. Took him home to eat him and said there was about a 3" bluegill in his stomach. Interesting.

Yeah, I've done it a time or two. I like to try to find an alternative that's similar. Like, if my buddy is throwing a creature craw, I'll throw a baby brush hog. Or if he's throwing a ned rig, I'll throw a curly tail grub. A Zoom Fat Albert grub, texas rigged with a 1/16oz weight is something that they don't see much, and thus, does pretty good. It'll twist your line though if you ain't careful. I caught this bass on the above rig, using a 1/0 ozark trail offset worm hook. Some ozark trail stuff is decent, including their worm hooks. I was running braided line, which doesn't show the twist nearly as much as mono. If using mono, I usually use a 2/0 EWG hook to give the grub a bit of a keel.

Bites can be hard sometimes. Braided line helps with it, but isn't mandatory. I use mostly mono and I don't have any trouble. Depending on the day, a texas rig with a creature will outfish a bladed jig, and visa versa, just depends on the day how each is presented. Texas rigs are great and worth the time invested to master. Zoom U tails are good worms. I use them with 1/8oz bullet weights and a 3/0 offset worm hook. I normally peg my weight. Take the same rig and add a baby brush hog, if they want a creature. If your son in law is catching them on something like that, I'd throw my own on after a few minutes. No shame in that. You can add a glass bead between the hook and weight, and leave a little bit of room (1/4") for the weight to move, and it'll give your texas rig some sound. Clicking like that might be what they want, and might give you an edge, or not. Just have to try it sometime.

Howdy and welcome. What have y'all caught bass on? A little piece of advice that I sort of use is "Fish every piece of visible cover." So if there is a log, fish it, if it's a twig, fish it. I extend the advice to include non-visible cover and structure such as where I suspect a drop, or brush pile or whatever. That helps me a lot to give me some direction.
  9. I was not aware of that product, thanks for sharing.
  10. Let's see... the lures I'm confident in fishing a single lure challenge with would be: Jig Texas rigged worm split shot worm fluke curly tail grub beetle spin Of those, I'd probably choose the Texas rigged worm using a Powerworm in Plum color.
  11. I just searched lindy walking sinker and lindy rig. So basically it's a carolina rig, but with a dangly sinker. Hmmm, interesting. That gets hung up less? Thanks. I'll have to give that a try sometime.
  12. Thanks. I haven't tried paddle tails on them yet, just the Rage Bug rigged vertically. I have a white/chartreuse one that I have fished only a handful of times and I have a Zoom split tail trailer on it, but it is pretty subtle.
  13. I didn't know that, thanks. I guess the farther north you get, the more walleye you catch when targeting bass. Man it'd be rough to accidentally lip one of them critters.

    Howdy and welcome.
  15. I had this spinnerbait tied on for practice in the yard, and decided to give it a few casts. It was in a small assortment I bought from Jigman a couple years back for only shipping. I put a skirt on it, and gave it to a friend. Well, he lost it. Then, another friend snagged it about a year later, and when I recognized it, he gave it to me. The first friend had blacked it out with a sharpie. I caught this one on his pole. I tied a worm on for him to use on his other pole, and gave it a test cast. This one was very pretty. I watched him set the hook - he really gave him the business. Tied myself on one and went at it. This was a nice little fighter.
  16. My buddy has some old braid that's been in his truck for most of its life, an unknown amount of time. I tried some when we were out and I needed some line. It was weak and I had several breaks before I gave up on it.
  17. I've found that fishing in heavy current to be a great motivator to both reduce the number of backlashes, and expedite their removal.
  18. That's great information, thank you.
  19. I am still learning the carolina rig. I've had a few bites here and there on one. All from the bank. I've been wanting to fish some points with it on my local lake. We'll see how it does. I haven't tried a fluke on it yet. I've had the best luck so far with a finesse worm/trick worm, and all my bites have been pretty shallow.
  20. I've use Big Game Solar Collector occasionally. I've still caught fish with it when A, fishing a place they bite easy, B, fishing at the river where the current is strong. I have not caught fish where they are pressured using it, but I haven't fished it much there due to a lack of confidence. I think it matters on pressured fish, but I think it doesn't matter on not pressured fish. ------------ I didn't realize it was your first post, Howdy and welcome!
  21. These guys make it work, at least for 1 trip. Anyone wants to do this, I'm down for some friendly competition.
  22. I hardly ever have to pick at them anymore. For that matter, I practice in the yard or fish every day and I don't get a backlash every day. I can't remember the last time I had a real bad one. It was earlier this year though from hitting a tree on my back cast. I cut some line out and got back into business.
  23. Can you explain how about the damage? As long as I don't stab the gills, what damage occurs?
  24. I have a scale that had a lip grabber, but it broke so I added a hook in its place. I put the hook in the gills, between the gill plate and the first gill. It doesn't appear to harm the fish. No blood, they swim off. Should I switch back to a lip gripper?
  25. I do my best to prevent loops. I normal go so far as to line up the line coming off the spool with the position of the guide if it's not close. I have found line management to be very helpful in reducing backlashes. Yep, catching something on my back stroke is my number one issue. But I don't do that a lot as I'm constantly looking for obstructions.
