Spent as much time catching fast strong salt water fish as fresh water fish, some salt game fish that out weigh me and far stronger. 1. Always try to keep a big fast swimming fish in front of you by following the fish if possible. 2. Adjust your drag 1/3rd the line strength and trust it. Rarely backoff your drag and use your thumb to add force when need. Loosening drag force can give a big fish the opportunity to run uncontrolled running getting into trouble like going under the boat. 3. Stripe bass tend to make a second run when they get near and see the boat so be prepared for it. bass anglers tend to button drown the reel drag in the false belief the bass will run into cover and break the line. The line being used is usually 2x to 3x the bass weight and the fish can’t break it by pulling to hard. However salt water game fish can easily break line 2X their weight by pulling hard so you learn to adjust the drag or loose the fish. Tom

The late Aaron Martens got me started on Sunline Shooter in the really 90’s, 300 meter spools for $35. This started a love/ hate relationship with FC line. Liked the lure feed back using jigs and bottom bumping lures, hated the knot strength regardless of the knot used. Also didn’t like the dry line spring off the spool, not from memory but difficult to manage. Started using Tangle Free I had for mono spinning spinning reels and that solved the dry line issue. Nothing has ever solved knot strength issues. Tried every brand known to man and Tatsu or Shooter are equal and perform good so stayed with brands. Tom

Bass are not salmon that return to spawning area or die trying. If the spawning area the bass choose has the right water conditions, same level with the same soil and cover conditions they tend to return to that area. Beds don’t usually stay clean and require the male bass to renovate or make completely new bed. Our local lakes can change 100’ in depth leaving last years spawning area high and dry, sometimes for several years, so no the bass don’t use the same bed and females often lay eggs in several beds. We have never met and a world apart yet I know you. My wife was from MN and her family spent summers at Lake of the Woods, Canada. Kay’s dad was a pioneer and had a float plane to explore all the lakes within flying distance and lived to hunt and fish. Kay’s families pace of life was far different from mine driven by competition and deadlines. Two family friends of Kay’s were Mil and Chuck. Mil loved to canoe fish using a fly rod and Chuck was her close friend and expert canoeists, both were old when I met them. Mil lived by herself after her husband passed on a remote island in a log cabin. Chuck lived closed by on another island and were friends long before Mil’s husband passed. Both Mil and Chuck taught me so much about life at a slower pace and how to see life. Mil and Chuck were both wonderful people and what appeared to be enjoying a simple life were in fact both well educated with doctorates, Mil Head Professor at Illinois University retried and doctorate of animal husbandry from Illinois and ran the Vail Ranch in cattle program SoCal. You can never judge a book from it’s cover and sharing time on the water having Canadian shore lunches story telling reminds me of you on a remote island listening to loons camping out on a flat Canadian Shield rock island ?. Using side mirrors is simple! Your hand in your lap then move your hand on the stirring wheel the direction you want the trailer to move and stir the 1 fender in the mirror. Tom

Low knot strength with FC line negates any advantage, 2 FC knots to fail with poor FC knot strength. Small diameter braid is an advantage regarding line drag. You also need to factor in the average bass size being caught, 3 lb bass use whatever works, DD knot strength can be a big factor. Tom

30# Mono on a MHF rod rating is 4 lb max lifting power! I was fan of10# and 12# Big Game until discovering Sunline Deifer Armilo about 6 years ago; 22# / .015D = 15 lb BG @ .015D. 11 lb Armilo is .011D, less line resistance going through water = less line bow. What bass anglers feel as line stretch is line bow underwater, line isn’t stretching. Gear ratio to me = IPT. Deep diving crank baits a lower gear ration (5 to 6 to 1) moving less line per handle turn making it easier to retrieve a lure with bing water resistance.

Are you nuts! How much force can a deep diving lure put on line to, stretch it? answer it takes 1/3rd the line pound test to come close to start mono to stretch and that is close to the MH rods power limit! Tom

Hair or hair/ feature jigs similar to crappie jigs are popular for Smallmouth bass and often fished under a bobber; Float ‘n Fly. Larger hair jigs similar to salt water Strip bass jigs often called a Preacher jig about 5” long is the other extreme. Bass hair jigs 1/4 oz to 1 oz once popular like Doll Fly combined with a pork trailer was the original “jig n pig”. This type of bucktail hair jig still works good but most anglers have moved on to silicone skirted jigs that offer a wider range of colors with fakes that appeal more to anglers. I am old school and still use hair jigs with pork trailers year around with good success simply because big bass still eat them. Yes pork moved in both cold or warm water whereas some soft plastics tend to stiffen in cold water. The problem today is pork trailer have become hard to find and expensive. Tom

Dawn shore oriented or shallow bass are usually still hunting from the night before and active. Active bass tend to strike regardless where they located, can be top water, mid or deeper water column. Does a noisy lure splashing down startle some bass? It could, more then likely it gets their attention and they check it out or follows it. If you don’t get any strikes let the area settle down a few minutes to give the bass time to return then try other lures. Tom

Start at the circled + @18’ and meter the entire area to determine where to start fishing, 35’ and up it all looks good to me. Tom

Glass bass boats you simply line the center of the trailer up and drive the boat on, wind and current isn’t a big issue. Light weight aluminum 16’ to 17’ bass boats are different as difficult to drive on straight when you can’t see the trailer fender underwater or keep the boat on the trailer. Side poles or side bunks are every helpful if not essential. Backing the trailer simply watch the driver side trailer fender tire and keeping it going where you want the trailer to go. Small trailers with short tongues take slight adjusts, the key is starting straight before backing down. Most trailers are deep enough when the fender is about 1” out of the water or starts to float. Don’t need poles to see the trailer fender, they help recovering the boat. Practice and launching or recovering becomes easy. Tom

I am a fan of Yamamoto Hula grubs, Senko’s and creature lures. I was going to reference the Sanshouo as a very versatile soft plastic but no longer see it available? I used the Sanshouo as a frog unweighted swimming over debris mates this spring with good success when nothing else worked. Rigged with a 3/0 Owner Cover Shot #4107 hook. I also like to Slip Shot rig 4” DT Hula Grub with 3/8 oz cylinder weight and same 3/0 Cover Shot hook. Tom

Tatsu 20# is .015D or the diameter as 15# Big Game. Whatever you choose as backing will remain as backing with about 75 yds of Tatsu 20# FC. Leaving 25 yards of FC as backing when change line is my suggestion. Tom

We think of off shore fishing with the wives as sunshine, blue water, following seas with dolphins entertaining us. All this is weather dependent so plan around good weather. Bottom fishing is very boring and easy for people without sea legs to get sick and that ruins any trip. If the east coast closer to the Gulf Stream with 1 hour boat ride and trolling for blue water game fish like Tuna, Wahoo, Dorado and a shot at bill fish with the girls watching the sea life is a lot better outing and well worth the drive. If you want meat then go bottom fishing, me I opt to buy my fish at Costco. Tom

I have had this problem for a few months and tried everything without success including clearing cookies etc. my efforts ended in me not being able to log back on for a week. Now. I start a thread by clicking on the newest in the forum to open it up. Tom

Brass ‘n Glass shaking worms works to attract bass in a positive way, it’s my go to rig for Texas worms for decades. Lots noise background underwater for bass to sort out and hone in on. Clicks are positive a sound crawdads make. I have tried several different gadgets to add clicking sounds to my jigs over the decades old catching bass on jigs. The Venom glass worm rattles didn’t have the catch rates of aluminum tube rattle with 2 steel balls. Where I fish the water is generally 8’ to 10’ visibility or very good. I use rattles at night for added attraction and they work good. Tom

Anytime low light or low visibility conditions are present. Jig rattles simply add low clicking sounds that attract bass that are feeding on crawdad. Gary Klein’s rattle back jig is a good example to copy or buy. The add on rattle collars look and act like legs and work OK. Glass Venom rattles inserted into the trailer are the least effective imo.
