St. Croix 7'1" M casting rods - Bass X or Mojo?
I have the SC Victory 7’1” MF in a spinning rod that is rated 3/16-5/8 oz and if* the casting rod uses the same blank it would ideal with all the lures listed except Rapala original balsa Minnow lures. The reason imo is the rod tip is too stiff for casting reels to launch the original Minnow lures. Tom *Don’t see a Victory 7’1” MF casting rod listed?

Expedition to Lake Tahoe, looking for intel
Haven’t fished Lake Tahoe in decades. Truckee River outflow has a hwy bridge with big trout being feed by onlookers, can’t fish within 100 yards of the bridge but worth seeing. Lake Tahoe is extremely clear and deep, over 4,000’. From shore the water tapers slower out about 200 yards at about 100’, then drops off to 1,500’ deep ledge around the lake. Nearly all the trout locate near that 1,500’ ledge too far off shore to fish without a boat. Rumors Smallmouth bass now populate Tahoe in small numbers. I caught several big rainbow and Lake (Mackinaw) trout along the 1,500’ 1st ledge drifting live crawdads 150’ deep in the “purple”water at Meeks Bay. Caught the crawdads around the rocky shoreline. Truckee River and Fallen Leaf Lake would be a better shoreline experience imo. Tom

Just bought my first boat and I need cleaning advice
You ask for advice then ignore it. Any questionable cleaner regarding affecting paint simply test a small area. There isn’t a magic cleaner, they all require liberal use of elbow grease....wipe on wipe off! Tom

Can we exterminate silver carp?
Can “we” as anglers control a invasive fish species no! Can a government agencies control the exploding Silver Carp population, yes with enough $$ and top priority given. Tom

Is rod/reel aesthetics super important to you?
I keep my rods and reels clean avoiding damage from use. 1. Lay down your rods, don’t drop them on the deck. 2. Keep unused rods in a protective sleeve, helps to preserve the condition and protect guides. 3. Don’t put away your rods and reels wet, wipe them dry, and cut off the hooks, lures before putting the rod and reel away. ”Shine me bright so I work alright” a naval term for good reason. Tom

The older 2002 Fisher Pro 1860 boat comes in V hull and a Mod V hull, which are you looking at? Are all the other OB’s Merc 4 strokes? If you like the Fisher boat layout and TM etc have engine checked out by a mechanic. Tom

Most Tackle
When you don’t how many lures you have it’s time to stop, and take inventory listing every lure. When selling my stuff a few ago years listing everything was eye opening!? each lure brought back a memory. Tom

What casting setup(s) to add?
Very few anglers today flip, they pitch and you can do that with the MH rods you have. If you want a longer rod for all round use Irod IRG754F Gen 3 is a very good frog rod and deep diving bigger crank bait, up to 2+ oz swimbaits, wake baits and flip etc. If the crankbaits are shallow to medium diving or lipless a 7’3 or 4” Medium moderate crank bait rod works good. California Delta vs Clearlake?
2 very different ecosystems; natural lake vs river system. Clear Lake is the oldest and only natural bass lake in California. The San Joaquin / California Delta is massive made up from 5 rivers and 1500 miles of fishable water ways. Clear Lake get far more fishing pressure and has a good population of DD size bass, but imo easier to learn to bass fish then the Delta Tidal system. Tom

have you ever wondered why?
Some folks can crack a safe others can’t tie their shoes, strike detection is all about being a safe cracker, educated finger tips. Some feel the pin ***** others don’t? Tom
-
have you ever wondered why?
Feel isn’t a opinion it’s a fact. Try sticking a needle in your finger tip, the feed back is real. same with line being felt by your finger tip, you feel it or you don’t. Tom

Why do I struggle to find and catch fish?
If you fish tournaments the bass you catch need to weigh more the 90% of the field fishing to be in the top10%. Simply put you need to catch adult size bass 3+ lbs on average or 15 lb limits. If you can’t catch 15 lb limits don’t tournament bass fish. Tom

Swimbait line question
Butch Brown has caught more DD swimbait bass then anyone I know of. Butch uses straight 20#/.016D Seaguar FC, no braid. Butch buys Large spools of FC and changes it often and that is the safe thing to do. Stress creates failure using FC line, change it often when casting big swimbaits. I settled on 25#/.016D Armilo because it’s stronger, easier to cast, doesn’t need line conditioner like FC and didn’t need to change unless it was visually damaged. FC sinks and that can make a slight difference fishing sinking swimbaits. Choices. Tom

if you come across a fisherman struggling..do you help?
Offering help on the water depends on the circumstances, usually a dad with his children who ask for help. Doesn’t occur often because tend to keep out of other people’s space. Few times I have offered help is at the dock, not on the water fishing. Off the water I try to help anyone interested in fishing via fishing forums and in the past doing seminars. Tom

Looking to buy a dedicated jerkbait casting rod to pair with Curado MGL 150
Handle length is another term that needs defining. TW uses a illustration that clarifies thier handle length is measured from the rod butt end to the front of the reel locking ring or fore grip. Several rod mfr’s and TT measures from butt end to back of the reel seat. Again no standard and confusing. I kept Major Craft NAC-T681M/SI Iovino Splash-It rod, 6’8” MF because it is a good all around rod for lures between 3/16 oz to 5/8 oz ( rated 1/4-1/2 oz). This rod is excellent jerk bait and top water, plus bottom contact finesse soft plastics. 11” handle to back of reel seat. I would look at Shimano Curado 6’8” MF rod, 13 1/2” from the front of the reel lock ring. Tom

Your Starting Lineup
My current 5 rods & reels, 2 casting and 3 spinning are set up to back seat and catch local SoCal bass. The custom ALX rod w/ Daiwa reel and 12 lb FC is used to catch big bass using jigs. I caught all my giant bass using hair jigs w/ pork trailers so this outfit is ideal for that purpose. The 2nd bait caster is a universal MF rod w/ Shimano reel using 11 lb Armilo. I can use nearly every lure in my tackle bag with this combo. The spinning finesse rods are 2 Victory 7’1 MF and 7’3” MXF both with Shimano reels. These are used to simply catch bass with finesse soft plastics and Senko’s. The 5th spinning combo is a back or dedicated slip shot rod my son used, Phenix split shot rod w/ Shimano reel. That’s it 5 combo’s and2 small tackle bags and it’s all I need today. I ask whom ever Inam fishing with what lake and known current bite. Based on that info stock my tackle bags accordingly. I always have my hair jigs and add pork trailers appropriate for the lake. Add a few other jigs depending on the lake. Soft plastics include Roboworms, custom hand pours, Yamamoto Senko’s and Flick Shake 4.8. Hard baits a few medium divers, Jerk baits, top waters and structure spoons. May add Scrounger depending on the lake. Very simple and confident wherever I am fishing. Tom

Your Starting Lineup
Early pre spawn transition from winter cold water period. Spend more time surveying the major points near the dam and any larger creek arms. The bass are looking for prey and moving up as the water column warms. To me determining the depth to fish, the structure type and cover determines the lures to use. Sitting in my warm comfortable chair I don’t have a clue what’s is going on in the lakes at central MO? So after launching the 1st item is your sonar and check out the ramp, the marina, the water temps and get a feel for what’s going on. I am a jig fisherman and crawdads are on the pre spawn menu, so my 1st choice. After that keep a open mind and go fishing using you confidence lures putting the puzzle together. Good. Luck, stay warm! Tom
